OpenJDK / Sun JRE MicroEmu

2010-02-07 Thread Gunter Ohrner
Hi!

I'd like to know if OpenJDK or Sun JRE work reliably and stable on the
N900 and if MicroEmu works well enough to support some Java ME MIDlets,
especially DB Railnavigator, a public transport travel planner.

Unfortunately I do not (yet) own an N900 and there does not seem to be a
full emulator for testing the complete environment with ARM binaries on
an x86 host.

I already found and read the following ressources, which sound rather
promising:

* http://wiki.maemo.org/Java
* http://wiki.maemo.org/CamSWL_OpenJDK_on_N900
* http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=37405
* http://www.microemu.org/

I also tested DB Railnavigator with Java SE 6 and MicroEmu 2.0.4 on my
x86 Linux Notebook, which seems to work pretty good, except some
problems with fullscreen mode.

* http://railnavigator.bahn.de/bin/pf/query-p2w.exe/dn?p2wMode=h2g
  (Lower half of page.)

Maybe someone already has some experience with OpenJDK / Sun JRE on his
N900 and can tell me how usuable it works, and maybe someone could even
test DB Railnavigator to check if it's starting and running sufficiently
fast on this platform?

Greetings,

  Gunter

Re: Memory Error using mircob

2010-02-07 Thread Floriano Scioscia
Hi Ed,

What other applications/packages have you installed?

Please send a list, maybe there is some app from Extras-devel which is
taking up memory. On my N900 top says more than 4 MB free when no window is
open, with 76 MB caching.

The space on / should not be an issue.

Regards
Floriano

 Hello,
Whenever I try to edit or add a bookmark in microb I get an error saying:

Operation temporarily disabled due to low memory

All I have to do is open the browser and try to edit an existing
bookmark; it fails even when it's the first thing I do after a reboot.
Immediately after reboot top shows I have around 315K free, after
starting the browser I have around 167K free.

My disk usage looks like this:

 /: 42M free
 /home:1.7G free
 /home/user/MyDocs:26.4G

I guess root is looking a bit full (84%) but I wouldn't of said that
was too serious (or a likely cause?)

Before I start uninstalling stuff does anybody have any bright ideas?
Does anybody have bookmarks working under a similar kind of resource usage?
Is it possible to get microB to give me any log files?

 Regards,
 Ed

RE: OpenJDK / Sun JRE MicroEmu

2010-02-07 Thread Aldon Hynes
I installed Sun's JRE, 1.6.0_10 on my N900. I managed to get command line
java applications to run, but did not get as far as getting Java ME MIDlets
to run. It may be possible, I just didn't get that far.

However, this might be a better question maemo-developers list, which also
talks a lot about Scratchbox, which is the testing environment most
developers use on X86 hosts.

Firefox and NoScript on N900

2010-02-07 Thread Jason
All,

I'm doing something stupid. :-) I got the maemo update installed this
morning. I installed the newest firefox, and then added the noscript plugin.

This is where I feel dumb. I can't for the life of me get to configure
noscript. There _has_ to be some way to configure it other than about:config.
If I press options, the button will sit there, depressed, and nothing happens.
If I'm on a web page and click the noscript icon in the upper right corner,
nothing happens. I've tried long-press, double-click, stylus, finger press,
everything I can think of.

Has anyone else seen this? How did you fix it?

thx,

Jason.

 Hi,

yesterday evening my N900 was fully charged (blue led). I copied 2 films
via wifi (700Mb each), played a bit with Angry Birds, started to watch a
film then stopped after 20mn. The only applications running (I think)
were the Facebook widget, the OMWeather widget and the media player,
paused. I disconnected the wifi (I still don't have a data plan), locked
the screen and went to sleep (I think the battery icon was showing
 something like half-full).
In the morning (something like 8 hours after that) it was dead, out of
 battery.

So (for those interested) it seems there are several problems:

- Just disconnecting from wifi with the menu from the wifi icon is
temporary, and makes the n900 reconnect by itself later. My fault, I
didn't know that.

- The Facebook empathy plugin is severely broken, in that it makes some
other empathy plugins loose their connexion and try to reconnect
regularly. I had to delete the FB account from Conversations to make
them work again. After checking, the same thing happens on a plain
Debian desktop. I'll try reporting a bug upstream, but maybe a bug
@maemo.org would also be needed, what do you think ?

- The wifi driver apparently has some troubles reconnecting to my AP
after a while. Rebooting the n900 makes the problem go away. Next time
it happens I'll try to gather some logs.

HTH,
Xav

See this:
  https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6416

it may be relevant :)

If so just cc yourself on the bug - no need for a comment as it's already fixed
internally.

IME this is only true if you select 'Wi-Fi' (or probably 'Any
connection') for 'Connect automatically' in the 'Internet connections'
settings. I have it on 'Always ask'. (I think if one disconnected
manually it should never try to reconnect automatically, just suggesting
ways around it for now)

I've experienced this once, and unloading the wl12xx kernel module and
loading it again fixed it. I use the Wifi Switcher status menu plugin
now to unload the kernel module, apparently this may also save more
power than merely disconnecting.

created this bug/enhacement for the TouchSearch widget, please let me
