Hi, I just got my N900 a week ago, I like it, Linux inside yeah :) Some questions though: I can do word completion in xterm via tab. But how to do it in apps like notes or when I want to edit my email account? The complete word is there in blue, but I have no clue about which button to hit... I have enabled /bin/bash as default shell for user and root. For user I can use 'ctr + r' for searching the history of commands, but this isn't working when I am root (sudo gainroot). I would assume that hitting Cancel would cancel the close operation. Instead it cancels the save operation and closes the window without saving changes. IMHO the button should be renamed or the action should be changed to cancelling the close operation. There should be three buttons. 'Save draft and close', 'Close without saving', 'Continue editing' In general, I like the more informative, GNOME-style buttons as you propose; however, there are two issues: i) changing the ok/cancel to these more explicit titles would be inconsistent with the rest of the UI. I don't necessarily always agree with the UI consistency-über-alles rule, but it's an uphill battle to change that. Even having three button is too 'diverse'... ii) even in english, the names are quite long; in many other languages these longer names may not fit on the screen. RE: Diablo mail application bug?
Hi Henrik, -Original Message- From: ext Henrik Frisk [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Modest. [snip] There should be three buttons. 'Save draft and close', 'Close without saving', 'Continue editing' (Search (ctrl-E in Modest) presents three buttons...) Problem to me is that the 'Cancel' button doesn't cancel the operation that initiated the dialog: the closing of the window. I'm not going to make this a big issue but I find it really confusing although I can see the driving force behind it is consistency. Even hitting the right button (that is, OK) forces the user to change folder and reopen the mail. I agree that 'Cancel' is confusing here; but as I explained, inertia is quite high. Which is not to say that we shouldn't try to improve this. ii) even in english, the names are quite long; in many other languages these longer names may not fit on the screen. However, I agree that 'Cancel' is misleading here. But at least, after loosing your mail once, one will not forget... I'm not going to argue that I'm representative, but I don't seem to learn at all. I use emacs for most of my work and ctrl-W means something else there. As a result I unintentionally close windows quite often. And I intentinally click Cancel every time thinking it's the right thing to do... Hmmm... maybe cua-mode would be good for you? I thought it was a mistake, but if it isn't, I'll try to learn! good luck! best wishes, Dirk. ___ maemo-users mailing list maemo-users@maemo.org https://lists.maemo.org/mailman/listinfo/maemo-users

RE: modest does not update newmail in imap folder
Hi Luca, -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ext Luca Olivetti Note that Modest won't recurse into IMAP subdirectories to check for new mails; this is for efficiency reasons. Status can be used to just update the message count and it's quite efficient (at least with cyrus as a server). IIRC thunderbird uses it to quickly update the folder tree view. OTOH claws just recurses the subfolders (downloading headers while checking) and it is dog slow, to the point that I disabled the feature and I just select the folders when I want to check for new mail. Ah, good point; we use tinymail, and I think the unread count is a function of the headers/messages that are actually on the device, not of the output of STATUS. For technical reasons, it seems easier to keep those in sync. Might be a nice future enhancement to support STATUS as well. Usually, new mail will finds its way to the INBOX, so that shouldn't be a problem in most cases. It is if you filter server side. Yup. Hi Mike, Thanks for taking the time to comment in such detail. -Original Message- From: ext Mike Lococo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] There's currently no built-in way to handle this in modest; the reason for the minimalism is that features tend to confuse many users (e-mail setup is hard!). But obviously, that's not always the right choice for users who know what they are doing... This may be a general comment, but since you're a Modest dev and it has the feel of wontfix about it, I'll make the case for the bug/rfe: The 'feel of wontfix'. Poetry :) Note that I am not too much involved in Modest development at the moment, but obviously I am keeping a close eye on it. ... 3) It would be possible to greatly improve the state of things without any additional options at all by issuing missing mailserver errors during the new message check as an info-alert (is that the right term for the little popup messages in the upper right-corner of the screen that don't require user interaction to clear?), rather than as two separate popup boxes requiring user interaction to clear (one error message + the account preferences box in order to fix the faulty account). It's worth noting that Modest already throws an error during account creation if the mailserver is bogus, so it's not necessary to issue such a loud error message during mail-check. Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe leaving the incoming mail server empty would be possible. But still, many users don't even understand the different universes of incoming and outgoing mailservers, and its hard to make it somehow hard for non-technical users to something wrong, while still giving flexibility to powerusers... RE: How do i uninstall the default Email program?
Hi all, You can't *really* cleanly uninstall the default e-mail program, but here are some hints: (I should blog these, I guess). [ Big *CAVEAT*: this is all at your own risk; if it breaks, you can reflash ] - as somebody suggested, you can create a new menu 'Unused' and move unused icons there -- you can't delete them, but you can move them there. - when you update modest, you can move the icon to 'My selection', so it's always nearby. - you can use gconftool-2 --set /apps/modest/is_default --type Boolean 1 to improve integration with the system -- note, this is not perfect, but at least some system-wide things will now prefer modest use: gconftool-2 --set /apps/modest/is_default --type Boolean 0 to restore the old behaviour. For the other things, you can file 'Enhancement' bugs, and we'll have a look at those.
