Hi,

I was able to sync my n900 with Gnome Evolution on Ubuntu via my Debian
server.

I'd be interested inn this topic, too. Additionally, synchronisation
with Iceowl would be interesting!

Is there a way in which you can use your own server for the data?

Did you read the reply I wrote last time you asked this question a few
days ago? The common solutions to this question are in the wiki.

I'm probably too dumb, but I didn't find it in the wiki.

Is it possible to make a backup (image) which allows you to reinstall

I don't get my usb keybd to work and it might be a good idea to start

You should be able to flash the old kernel back using the flasher. Get
the latest PR1.3 firmware image for your region/phone from:
http://tablets-dev.nokia.com/nokia_N900.php

Then you can do:

flasher-3.5 -f --flash-only=kernel -R -Ffirmware-image

Thanks man! That worked. Now it uses the default kernel I suppose? What
to do with the kernel-power v48, try again or avoid it or better go for 47?

You don't mount a keyboard or mouse, so that step is not needed in
those cases (or any case, if you mount manually)

When I connect and mount a usb stick, it says
'unable to connect, no file system available'

I have not tried a keyboard or mouse with H-E-N, but I have used
several flash drives and external HDDs with no problems. Maybe tonight
when I am home I'll try to connect a keyboard.

Also try using an externally-powered USB hub.

n900: newbie questions

2011-08-23 Thread Dirk

Hi,

I just got my N900 a week ago, I like it, Linux inside yeah :)

Some questions though:

I can do word completion in xterm via tab. But how to do it in apps like
notes or when I want to edit my email account? The complete word is
there in blue, but I have no clue about which button to hit...

I have enabled /bin/bash as default shell for user and root. For user I
can use 'ctr + r' for searching the history of commands, but this isn't
working when I am root (sudo gainroot).

Claws-mail is installed here, but I am searching for a way to sync
agenda with my Ubuntu desktop somehow (/me don't like Google ...).
Is it possible to install this calendar plugin on my n900?
http://www.claws-mail.org/maemo/

http://repository.maemo.org/extras/dists/chinook/install/claws-mail-vcalendar.install

And yes, I like to use my usb keybd, but see my other thread for that ...

 There should be three buttons.

In general, I like the more informative, GNOME-style buttons as you
propose; however, there are two issues:

i) changing the ok/cancel to these more explicit titles would be
inconsistent with the rest of the UI. I don't necessarily always
agree with the UI consistency-über-alles rule, but it's an uphill
battle to change that. Even having three button is too 'diverse'...

ii) even in english, the names are quite long; in many other languages
these longer names may not fit on the screen.

However, I agree that 'Cancel' is misleading here. But at least, after
loosing your mail once, one will not forget...

Maybe we should add a 'Mu'[1] button, which would 'unask the question'...

Best wishes,

(Search (ctrl-E in Modest) presents three buttons...)
Problem to me is that the 'Cancel' button doesn't cancel the operation
that initiated the dialog: the closing of the window. I'm not going to
make this a big issue but I find it really confusing although I can
see the driving force behind it is consistency. Even hitting the right
button (that is, OK) forces the user to change folder and reopen the
 mail.

I agree that 'Cancel' is confusing here; but as I explained, inertia is
quite high. Which is not to say that we shouldn't try to improve this.

I'm not going to argue that I'm representative, but I don't seem to
learn at all. I use emacs for most of my work and ctrl-W means
something else there. As a result I unintentionally close windows
quite often. And I intentinally click Cancel every time thinking
it's the right thing to do...

Hmmm... maybe cua-mode would be good for you?

I thought it was a mistake, but if it isn't, I'll try to learn!

good luck!

 Subject: Installing r-base-core in Diablo

I would like to install the R statistical programming language and
environment on my N810 running Diablo. The package I need is
 r-base-core
(a debian arm version, I would think). I'm not sure how to set up the
appropriate repository so that I can then use apt-get install. I tried
before but apparently corrupted things and I just fixed them.
 So I would
like to avoid screwing up apt-get. Any suggestions would be
 appreciated.

I can run R via a shell (via ssh on another system) but it would be so
cool to run R on the N810.

I am not an R user myself, but:

and
http://makotonen.livejournal.com/23234.html

may be interesting.

RE: modest does not update newmail in imap folder

2008-08-18 Thread Dirk-Jan.Binnema
Hi Luca,

 -Original Message-
 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of ext Luca Olivetti

Note that Modest won't recurse into IMAP subdirectories to check for
  new mails;
  this is for efficiency reasons.

Status can be used to just update the message count and it's quite
efficient (at least with cyrus as a server). IIRC thunderbird uses it
to quickly update the folder tree view.
OTOH claws just recurses the subfolders (downloading headers while
checking) and it is dog slow, to the point that I disabled the feature
and I just select the folders when I want to check for new mail.

Ah, good point; we use tinymail, and I think the unread count is a
function
of the headers/messages that are actually on the device, not of the
output of STATUS. For technical reasons, it seems easier to keep those
in sync. Might be a nice future enhancement to support STATUS as well.

Usually, new mail will finds its way to the INBOX, so that shouldn't
  be a problem
  in most cases.

It is if you filter server side.

Yup.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

RE: Send-Only Accounts in Modest

Hi Mike,

Thanks for taking the time to comment in such detail.

 -Original Message-

  There's currently no built-in way to handle this in modest;
 the reason
for the minimalism is that features tend to confuse many
 users (e-mail
setup is hard!). But obviously, that's not always the right
 choice for
users who know what they are doing...

This may be a general comment, but since you're a Modest dev
 and it has
the feel of wontfix about it, I'll make the case for the bug/rfe:

The 'feel of wontfix'. Poetry :) Note that I am not too much involved
in Modest development at the moment, but obviously I am keeping a close
eye on it.

...

 3) It would be possible to greatly improve the state of
 things without
any additional options at all by issuing missing mailserver errors
during the new message check as an info-alert (is that the right term
for the little popup messages in the upper right-corner of the screen
that don't require user interaction to clear?), rather than as two
separate popup boxes requiring user interaction to clear (one error
message + the account preferences box in order to fix the faulty
account). It's worth noting that Modest already throws an
 error during
account creation if the mailserver is bogus, so it's not necessary to
issue such a loud error message during mail-check.

Yeah, that makes sense. Maybe leaving the incoming mail server empty
would
be possible. But still, many users don't even understand the different
universes of incoming and outgoing mailservers, and its hard to make it
somehow hard for non-technical users to something wrong, while still
giving flexibility to powerusers...

You were clear. I was just trying to point out that those popups can

That doesn't help folks who want to read mail also but makes them not
annoying to those of us who just occasionally send mail from the

What you *could* do (admittedly, a hack) is to get yourself a

It probably means that you're using an SMTP-server outside it's own

Ie. many ISPs won't allow you to use their SMTP server when your's not
using their network.

You could set another SMTP server that *does* work for the network
you're

(ie, use Gmail SMTP server, even if you don't use it for incoming mail)

RE: How do i uninstall the default Email program?

2008-03-17 Thread Dirk-Jan.Binnema
Hi all,

You can't *really* cleanly uninstall the default e-mail program, but
here are some
hints: (I should blog these, I guess).

[ Big *CAVEAT*: this is all at your own risk; if it breaks, you can
reflash ]

- as somebody suggested, you can create a new menu 'Unused' and move
unused icons there -- you can't delete them, but you can move them
there.

- when you update modest, you can move the icon to 'My selection', so
  it's always nearby.

- you can use
gconftool-2 --set /apps/modest/is_default --type Boolean 1
to improve integration with the system -- note, this is not perfect,
but
at least some system-wide things will now prefer modest
use:
gconftool-2 --set /apps/modest/is_default --type Boolean 0
   to restore the old behaviour.

For the other things, you can file 'Enhancement' bugs, and we'll have a
look at those.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

RE: (update) Re: OS2008: beta version of Modest e-mail client available

Hi Norman,

   * despite my warnings, I got reports that Modest works quite Ok
on OS2007/Bora. That's great news! We'll try to keep it that way
for the foreseeable future. You will have to build your own
 packages for OS2007 though.

That is great news---but I downloaded the svn source and
debian/control has a list of build-deps as long as your arm.
Unfortunately I can't find any of them, as I don't know what
repositories to look in. My root image contains the following pitiful
 /etc/apt/sources.list:

   deb http://repository.maemo.org/ bora free non-free
   deb-src http://repository.maemo.org/ bora free

What repositories to I need to add in order to be able to run
dpkg-buildpackage on the sources? I'm sure there must be useful
repositories at garage.maemo.org, but I don't know where.

(If it makes a difference I am running under scratchbox2 using the
 Code Sourcery toolchain.)

Ah... You would need to copy control.maemo-bora to control, but I think
there might still be some packages missing, such as
libwpeditor-plus-dev.

We'll be putting some work in getting it to run on bora too, will
get back on this.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

(update) Re: OS2008: beta version of Modest e-mail client available

2007-12-12 Thread Dirk-Jan.Binnema
Hi all,

Thank you all for your interest in Modest so far, in this mail
I'll try to answer some of the questions.

* first, after some discussion, please file any bugs you might
find under Communication/Modest in bugzilla.maemo.org; please
do _not_ use Communication/Email, that's for the old client,
  thanks!

* despite my warnings, I got reports that Modest works quite Ok
on OS2007/Bora. That's great news! We'll try to keep it that way
for the foreseeable future. You will have to build your own
  packages for OS2007 though.

* even if Modest does not replace the existing email-client right
now, it may do so in the future of course :) And, hopefully soon
I'll publish some tricks to make Modest more of a first-class
  citizen on OS2008.

* about IMAP-IDLE: in principle there is no network traffic at all
(or after 30min) but in practice there are some timeouts; we are
currently tuning those to find the optimum reliability / battery
usage (some GPRS connections are not very nice).

* IMAP subscriptions: not supported atm. will look into that, but
  no promises.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

RE: [maemo-users] IT2006 mail client - are IMAP folders supported

2006-06-20 Thread Dirk-Jan.Binnema
Hi,

So, does the new client support folders?

I'm pretty sure the answer is yes. I haven't got my 770 close
by to check directly but the mail client is based on the
lintiny frame work by Philip. You can check out all the
details in his blog here http://pvanhoof.be/blog/

While we are working on an experimental mail client using
libtinymail, the e-mail program shipped with IT2006 is not.

So, no IMAP-folders yet.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

RE: [maemo-users] can I repair/reset the mail app without reflashingthe device?

Subject: [maemo-users] can I repair/reset the mail app without
reflashingthe device?

  Hi,

the mail application on my Nokia 770 is somewhat confused, I
suspect the stored mailbox files got currupted: for example
when I receive a mail into the inbox, close the mail app,
open the inbox again, the email I just received is gone. It
looks like all archived mails are gone, too. The drafts folder
is empty, too.

How can I repair/reset the mailboxes of the mail app on the
Nokia 770 without reflasing the device?

Should I delete everything below /home/user/apps/email/ ?
Or just delete the cache.xml files in these directories?
Or some gconf-files?

I would try it in steps:
1) delete the cache file,
2) if that does not work, delete /home/user/apps/email/
(you might want to backup the mails first)
3) if that doesn't work either, you probably have to reflash :-(

It would be great if you reported any problems in Bugzilla.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

RE: [maemo-users] email application Error occurred

2005-12-16 Thread Dirk-Jan.Binnema
Hi Erik,

The email application worked fine (well, it worked) for me
yesterday. Today it dies with Error occurred as soon as it needs to
 check email.

If I empty my mailbox, it works, but as soon as there is a mail in it,
 this happens.

Has anyone else seen this? Anyone know why this happens?

We're looking into this...

Will the source code to the email app be released? I started to try to
port sylpheed to maemo yesterday and it definitely seems to be possible,
but I'd rather solve the problem in the real email app instead!

https://stage.maemo.org/svn/maemo/projects/email/
(use guest/guest to log in)

There's hard work going on in the code, so I hope we can fix
these problems in the forthcoming releases.

Best wishes,
Dirk.

Does this image support root access?

How to obtain root in Nokia 770 - the easy way

Get Linux-flasher utility: http://www.maemo.org/downloads/d3.php

Use Linux-flasher program (includes other neat parameters I prefer to
have set on):

If you want to just set the product rootimage to rd-mode
(you don’t need any product or sdk image to do this):
switch off the device
flasher –enable-rd-mode -R
switch on the device
-R switches off the device automatically when ready
switch on the device - it is now in rd-mode

–enable-rd-mode = enables R D mode, allows using /sbin/gainroot
-R = reboots the device after flashing
-- cut --

Have not tried this. Doesn't it work?
