  In the URL entry bar in the Web browser on the N900, I can't type a ~. If I
  type th eblue arrow, Sym the virtual keyboard comes up. I can click on ~ and
  it gets highlighted. But unlike in the X terminal, it doesn't then deexpose
  and
  enter the ~ in the URL entry bar. Is this a bug or have I just not figured
  out
  how to do this the intended way?

 Tap the ~, press space and then join the ranks of people upset by the
 broken, unobvious, unintuitive and just plain crazy behaviour of the
 character palette.

I can see the point when the special character is necessary as a
modifier to a regular character for languages that need them.

If there's a more straightforward way to accomodate people who need ñ,
ô, ü, etc. then I can't think of it.

 I'd say vote for the bug, but can't find it (perhaps the easiest way
 of finding it would be to raise it again and let Andre mark it as a
 dupe ;-))

 ...what I'm arguing is that it doesn't make sense for it to look and
 (from a button point-of-view) feel similarly to the other buttons in
 the palette; it doesn't make sense for it to be the third row (when
 rows 1, 2 and 4 act the same) and that it's unobvious even for people
 who are *used* to composing characters.

I'll say it confused me too, even though I need those modified
characters and am used to deadkeys.

Apart from making the character modifier palette buttons more distinct
(maybe a different button color?) what might have unconfuzzled me
would have been a system notification instructing me to type one more
character, or a space; the thin yellow bar across the top. There's
probably better ideas out there though.

Re: maemo.org Custom Google Search

2009-11-16 Thread Josef Assad
Some observations:

1. Duplicated content from the maemo.org and brainstorm tabs
2. The wiki tab, searching for josef: finds
http://wiki.maemo.org/User:Josefdk but doesn't find
http://wiki.maemo.org/Maemo.org_Sprints/November_09 for example
3. Not getting anything for on the t.m.o tab if one searches by Josef,
but plenty if searching by JosefA.
4. the b.m.o search for josef finds my reported bug 5304 and another
one I commented on 5672 but not others I reported like 5310, 5311
5. Doesn't find any of my posts on the mailing lists (search term
again, narcissistically, josef)

Not having any packages in my name, I'll forgive that it doesn't find
anything there. :)

 I've integrated the maemo.org Custom Google Search over at Talk (TMO),
 that will allow you to search the whole and specific sections of
 maemo.org. You can find the page here:

 Let me know how it works for you and if you want some other sections
 to be added.

 Thanks.

 Well I finally got the Maemo SDK Virtual Image installed. A very

 Everything actually DID work, and I now have Ubuntu installed in a

A nice gentleman has created a VPC image:

And converting a VPC image to a vbox image isn't complicated. I think it was
these instructions I followed:

http://www.sevenforge.com/2009/02/04/virtual-pc/

Or if the finger you use to click links is injured:

$ qemu-img convert -O raw start.vhd intermediate.bin
$ vboxmanage convertdd intermediate.bin final.vdi
$ vboxmanage modifyvdi final.vdi compact
