Re: fm radio

2008-01-10 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
Hi,

I had battery life problem recently after os2008 installation on my n800.
I started investigating this by re-fleshing new instance of OS, gradually
install new software and use strace to monitor what was going on.
What I found was each second or couple of second there was a process
querying /proc/something-i-cant-remember-now against headset connectivity.
I stopped fmradio home aplet and it was gone. I don't think it caused my
battery lasting only one day, but it may explain how fmradio 'knows' whether
headset is connected or not.

Interesting. Is there an API that an application can detect if a headset
  is connected or not?

There must be some software mechanism because the switch to headphone
output for audio is controlled in software, rather than hardware.

This can be seen by the fact that the FM radio application allows
audio to be output through the speakers when a pair of headphones is
 acting as aerial.

I see them with the File manager. On the left, there's a tree below

This tree disappears when there are no Samba servers in the LAN.

This is a new feature of OS2008, as far as I can tell.

 Maemo Mapper

 Pidgin
 Maemo screengrabber
 Nako
 Cityguide
 Password Safe
 Crazy Parking
 Kerez
 Maemopad +
 VNC Viewer
 Vagalume
 All these are working perfectly.

Battery Life N800 + OS2008

2007-12-21 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
Hi,

I know battery life topic was brought to this forum, but now I'd like to ask
about new OS2008 and battery life. I have noticed significant decrease since
I moved to OS2k8. I didn't ask before as I was waiting for official release.
Now I can confirm this is issue (in my case). Running on OS2007 I could use
my nokia for about 5 days. Now it last for about 1 day and I have to
re-charge.
I know CPU works faster and this means more power as well as there are more
improvements etc etc. Is this only one explanation? I usually try to close
all applications I don't need when not using my tablet.
Does anyone experience the same problem? Maybe this is coincidence and my
battery/charger is broken? However it charges and everything looks fine.

thanks

Pit

P.S. I really appreciate new OS. Most applications I use is already ported.
Everything is much faster and apart from my battery life concerns it looks
fantastic. Very well-done Nokia!

If so, will procedure from existing how-to work? I believe I will do some

Re: 4.2007.38-2 available

2007-10-02 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
If you are asking about:

This new release (version number 4.2007.38-2) provides a software fix for a
bug http://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1204 which may have appeared
while copying large amount of data over-the-air or from external SDHC memory
card to internal memory or vice versa. In some cases the downloaded data may
have corrupted
- and now all data are wiped completely - i hope not ;))

And more seriously:
Beware that flashing a new image on the Nokia 770 or on the Nokia N800 will
remove all user changes to the system, including preferences, bookmarks,
news feeds, user installed applications... Everything not on the memory card
will be gone and the device will behave as if just purchased with the single
exception that any previously-set lock code will be kept and not reset to
the factory-default of 12345 (even the code is not preserved on some
images).

2007-07-24 Thread Piotr Zagorowski
Hi,

As I suggested, you can probably start with list archive, this is what
I did before I bought my N800. There are also some nice
presentations on YouTube.
I think this is Nokia who mainly cares about basic linux distro, being
more exact, there is maemo community supported by Nokia (someone
please correct me if I'm wrong).
As I said, this is really nice device with a lot of potential. However
there are still some features missing, e.g. please have a look thread
about PIM functionality not being implemented very well, it is also
not a GSM/GPRS phone etc.
All after all it is matter of time and learn some basic things to
personalize this to one's needs.
I'm currently on business trip and I must say, my new toy is doing
great job ;-)

Hi,

you will need to add a few more repositories for starter (please find
below example). Then, as others said, you can install osso-xterm or
osso-xterm-advanced. Also there is a few method of gaining root access
(separate package I cannot remember name) or alternatively you can
install ssh server and run ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] (def password: rootme).
Obviously if you decided to install ssh server you need to change root

If you have ssh server and xterm installed, you can:
- run xterm
- ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]
- cp /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.oryg
- add all repositories you want or copy from internet ready file
- or if you have already extended version: cp

- apt-get update
Usually if something is wrong with repositories sites/files/keys it

Serious issues at that - people now have cards which can no longer be used in

Personally I'd be a little cautious about using the new update with any

and what can be done about it (and how to revive dead cards).

I don't mean to sound like a scaremonger but since this update is apparently
causing physical harm to cards (although it may be possible to recover them
with appropriate software, nobody has found any that works) it would be
sensible to hold off using the upgrade (or alternatively using expensive
cards with the upgrade) until Nokia advise otherwise.
