Re: N810 with GSM radio

2009-01-13 Thread Wayne Fiori
It would make the device far too expensive for its market. The cogs on
the radio device would add to the base cost. There would be different
European and American model -- each market uses different frequencies
for GSM/EDGE. That homologation for manufacturing would add additional
costs. The repair depot logistics would change as well. There would be
real FCC (and the equivalents) regulatory requirements to be met.
Worse, you would need to purchase service from a mobile phone
provider.

At that point the cost increases would push customers to an iPhone or
similar smart phone.

IMO, the best advantage that the tablets have is being free of the
entanglement mobile phone service providers.

Re: sdk: finally, it's working great

2008-03-17 Thread Wayne Fiori
If it is your DHCP server in your home network, just bind the N800's
MAC to specific IP address in the dhcpd.conf file.

For example,
host N800 {
  hardware ethernet 08:00:2b:4c:59:23;
 fixed-address 192.168.1.222;
}

The same address will always be assigned via DHCP for your N800 this way.

Re: Maintaining an internet connection

Check /etc/resolv.conf. This sound like one of the name servers served
up by the DHCP server is functional and the rest aren't. Or manually
edit the file have you've been served an address such that
/etc/resolv.conf uses name servers that you know are valid.

Have you tried pinging or connecting to servers using their IP address
and not hostname?

Re: Web (SSL) VPN on n810

I've been using the N800 with Cisco's WebVPN (via an ASA). It is a
completely clientless VPN application and work perfectly with the
OS2008 web browser and OS. (I'm also using vpnc with OS2008)

The F5 SSL VPN is much more resource demanding. It essentially uses
SSL in an manner to make it identical to IPSec. That's why it is
asking for something to be installed on the client. Talk with your
network admin about the need for this plugin. It might not be
necessary for authentication/authorization or basic communication. The
plugin is likely necessary for IPSec-like functionality.

Re: Nokia Maps on N800

looks like the Maps app is an S60 app. Since the N800 isn't listed as
one of the compatible devices, why would you expect the application to
work with the N800?

Care to expand on this point? Which licensing issues?

(from Xiph's FAQ for Vorbis -- http://www.vorbis.com/faq/#flic)

What licensing applies to the Ogg Vorbis format?

The Ogg Vorbis specification is in the public domain. It is
completely free for commercial or noncommercial use. That means that
commercial developers may independently write Ogg Vorbis software
which is compatible with the specification for no charge and without
restrictions of any kind. However, the software packages we have
developed are available under various free/open-source software
licenses with varying allowances and restrictions.

What licensing applies to the included Ogg Vorbis software?

Most (but not all) of our utility software is released under the
terms of the GNU GPL. The libraries and SDKs are released under our
BSD-like license.

Note that developers are still free to use the specification to
write implementations of Ogg Vorbis licensed under other terms.

I would hardly characterize using the N800 has a terminal (ssh client)
as the province of power users.

Re: Skype Update?

2007-05-08 Thread Wayne Fiori
Skype is a little heavy for the N800. Besides, it's only taken Skype
two-three years to release an upgrade for Linux from version 1.3 to
1.4. While the Windows world is using v 3.1.

Why is Google Talk not sufficient?

So you are suggesting to run maemo inside scratchbox/Xephyr? Good suggestion,
have not tried that yet

I understand now that the N800 supports *only* jingles, but this does not
answer my question.

Is there a known way to get the output of the video cam to a linux desktop
(given both IPs are known)?

E.g. by running the Nokia win app in wine or even streaming raw data to a
linux desktop should work in a 54 mbit/s WLAN...

Have you tried running the Maemo VM appliance for VMware server?
