Application launcher

2007-09-06 Thread bob

I thought I saw something about an application launcher go by on the
planet site, but now I can't seem to find any reference to it (other
than a reference or two to an unfinished 'quick launcher' by DerekColman
[1])

Anybody know about a 'quick launcher' (aka something to place icons on
the home screen that are links to external or local resources) ?

Thanks

Thanks for making simple-launcher available.

Will it work with OS2006 on a 770? The current Application Catalog
listing lists it for OS2007 (only).

People reported it working on OS2006, while I test it only on N800
(OS2007).

Re: Application Launcher

2007-09-10 Thread D. L. Fuller
Misha--

I downloaded the file (direct download link) and installed Simple-
Launcher by opening in the Application Manager. A straightforward
process.

It works like a charm with OS2006 and does exactly what I want -- a
few easily changed icons in some empty desktop space that you then
simply click to directly open applications.

It wasn't exactly clear when first installing Simple-Launcher that
only a small box would appear in Edit Layout mode for the applet to
then drag to its preferred location. My small box was initially
mostly hidden beneath the internet search applet.

I'd suggest listing Simple-Launcher as OS2006 compatible after you
get positive feedback from a significant number of users. Add my
vote. It is a valuable tool.

Re: Application Launcher

2007-09-11 Thread Bob Herrmann

Hi Misha,

How does "Application Launcher" get its list of executable choices (and
I guess corresponding icons?) Is there a registry somewhere. I would
like to add some shell scripts that I use into the launcher. They do
things like configure networking for my office, and networking for home,
rsync files, etc...

Thanks

You could put Kerez in the Application Launcher, and your scripts in Kerez
;)

PS: Application Launcher works fine in OS2006 for me too. [WHISH] I'd like
to define a rectangular area where icons would autoarrange.

On the N800 desktop, you open the Desktop (press lower center button or
click on "Home") and select applet settings/Launcher Settings. A list
of apps comes up for you to select by checking a box.

Right, and my question is "how do I add my shell script into that list
(so I can then choose it?)" Ideally I would like to associate an Icon
with my shell script too.

It looks for .desktop files in /usr/share/applications/hildon, so the
scripts are not possible yet. They are in my mid term plans though.

Making a normal user search I could find only
http://downloads.maemo.org/product/idea - but maybe it's just me. :)

Users would have an easier life if developers could spend some time
creating a nice and useful page at http://downloads.maemo.org , with
screenshot, link to project page, etc. People downloading deb packages
directly from Garage pages has been a general use case until now, but
the shift has moved to the application catalog and this s just the
beginning.

fyi Tableteer and other Nokia sites will increasingly promote software
available in maemo.org. A useful page in the application catalog with a
working install file will be a requirement. Votes, comments and ranks
(to come soon) will play also a role when recommending applications A or
B.

Of course novelty, quality and coolness of the software itself is and
will be the primary factor. From a Nokia point of view it doesn't make
much sense to redirect regular users to places and actions they won't
understand (i.e.
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=239&release_id=643 )

Thank you for your kind suggestion. Hopefully now it's gonna be a bit
easier to fin it at downlaods.maemo.org. I still need to work on a
.install file though.
