The log is not saved, it only shows what you have done just now. So I
should have said that you should try to install a package and then check
"Tools > Log" for more detailed errors.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I found info on the web.
Here is how I fixed the problem.

First, I copied /var/lib/dpkg/available-old to available, and then did
'apt-get update" (twice). I was able to install claws-mail via apt-get
install. Just to be sure, I went into the app manager and installed
homeip and this time it installed OK. (Saved by the command line yet
again.)

I think I may have corrupted available when I tried to install r-base.

Thanks again.

I checked the log but there were no messages for packages I tried to
install. So I tried "apt-get install claws-mail". This downloaded the
software and then failed with this message:

dpkg: failed to open package info file /var/lib/dpkg/available' for
reading: No such file or directory
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2)

I checked and the file "available" does not exist but
"available-old" (with creation date 9/8/2008) does exist.

Does this shed any light?

Thanks.

Look into "Tools > Log". There will hopefully be some clues there.

You can also try to install claws or any other package using apt-get
install. That should give you detailed error messages as well.

Whenever this has happened to me on my N800 it has been a poorly seated
or corrupted internal SD card. Is there enough space on the internal
memory to hold the downloaded files etc? Not so good for the N810 though :-(

Can't Install New Apps in Diablo on N810

2008-09-10 Thread Rick Bilonick
I've been running Diablo on an N810 for several months. A few weeks ago
I used the method set up by penquinbait to clone the OS onto a 4gb
external memory card. This has worked very nicely - at least until a few
days ago. I've installed lots of apps given I had the space and still
have filled up only a tiny portion of the card. But now, I can't install
any apps using the application manager. For example, I tried to install
Claws. It downloads the software but the install always fails but no
info on why is given. I tried to install several other apps - all
download but fail to install.

I'm not sure if this is connected, but I was trying to see if I could
install a Debian arm version of R (r-base, the statistical programming
language and environment). I opened a shell and added a debian
repository or mirror site to /etc/apt/sources.list. This showed up in
the list of repositories in the app manager. When I ran apt-get install
it could never find the package. After I could no longer install any
apps, I removed the entry from sources.list but this had no effect on
installing through apps manager.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can figure out what is wrong and how
to fix it?
