perhaps adding a symlink in /usr/share/wallpapers/mga that points to
/usr/share/mga/backgrounds would be sufficient

Then I suppose a kernel compilation choice is the responsible. I tried all the

How can I debug that, everything locks with LiveUSB Beta2 just after USB key

First of all, no point reopening the discussion and abandoning the old
thread (which you posted to previously):
https://www.mageia.org/pipermail/mageia-dev/20110119/002240.html

From KDE's point of view, which is a bit warped, it probably won't
make any difference due to the specific dir layout KDE uses:
$ ls -R /usr/share/wallpapers/Horos/
/usr/share/wallpapers/Horos/:
contents/ metadata.desktop

/usr/share/wallpapers/Horos/contents:
images/ screenshot.png

/usr/share/wallpapers/Horos/contents/images:
1280x1024.png 1600x1200.png 1920x1080.png 1920x1200.png

So without finding a way to make this work for other DE's, symlinking
is moot IMHO.

You said:
kdebase4-workspace is patched to look in */mga/backgrounds

where is that patch? I grep'ed through all the -workspace package
patches and found nothing about this. Besides, why would KDE have look
in /usr/share/mga/backgrounds/ when it's just one file it can use,
/usr/share/mga/backgrounds/default.jpg which is a symlink to the best
resolution-fitting wallpaper depending on the user's monitor
resolution (XFdrake creates the symlink AFAIK); IIRC KDE plasma
default config in Mageia is set to use
/usr/share/mga/backgrounds/default.jpg as the default wallpaper.

 KDE = /usr/share/wallpaper

No, GNOME uses /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome, that's where the
 GNOME upstream wallpaper is:
 libgnome2:/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/gnome/background-default.jpg

/usr/share/backgrounds is used by gnome-screensaver (only).

 and so on

Ahmad, kdebase4 is patched is the solution.
Yes it has a interesting layout of dirs, but as i recall, if you just
drop an image in /usr/share/wallpapers it shows up in the plasma
dialogue.

And even if it is set up to use default.jpg as default, it still
misses all of the other bg's in the folder and all of the extra
backgrounds.

Before deciding what should be patched and what shouldn't, a default
wallpapers location should be used (which was the whole goal of the
thread I linked above). As you can see it's a jumble, each DE has a
different idea of where wallpapers should go; and it becomes more
confusing when the same issue is re-discussed afresh in a whole new
thread, saying the same things that were said in the old one :)

No this is not ascii

There is version 2.2.9.6 actually (2011-04-13).
So the Mageia version 2.2.9.5 is near by

Well, I thought that having a new distro was also the opportunity to
remove the mistakes made in the past.

So as the upstream of mondo, I'd really like to see packages in Mageia
using the upstream versions, and not stick to the legacy of Mandriva
here.

Of course, for people updating that may create a problem, but not that
difficult to solve and could be documented on a wiki page as known and
justified incompatibilities.

If we don't do it now, it will never be done :-(

While we are on it, what about afio ?

[Mageia-dev] quake2 issues

2011-04-30 Thread Maarten Vanraes
I was testing some games, and quake2 seemed to be broken by default...

1st, it seems for regular quake2 (and the 2 mods shipped) that you need the
demo downloaded. (no install script was provided)

2nd, it required one of the renderers, which were not installed, by default it
was the quake2-x11 one. (perhaps that one should be suggested?)

3rd, when running it with GLX, it couldn't find libGL.so (which is normal,
because my nvidia setup, there is libGL.so.1) but this seems hardly fixable, i
don't know how other graphic card setups or mesa or ATI will react?

4th, sound didn't work, (possibly due to OSS usages) i tried to use
soundwrapper on it, but #1070 happend, and soundwrapper segfaulted.

To completely fix this, this seems like quite some work and then i'm not sure
if this would be enough to put through version freeze.

Secondly, perhaps games like this (packages that require some non-
redistributable packages, which are still freely obtained) should maybe need a
policy?

eg:
 - script is always provided to get the non-redistributable part.
 - display a text notification after install that the script to fetch whatever
needed, still needs to be run to be able to play this game

So, perhaps this is something to be discussed for after final release...
