 Wouldn't that be easier ?

 NO.

 The decision to have a separated repo for tainted software is not up for
 debate... It has already been discussed and decided long ago.

 as for the question that started this thread:

 Repository question: where do we put non-free+tainted RPMs?

 It's simple, and even outlined in the mirrors_policy:
 http://mageia.org/wiki/doku.php?id=mirrors_policy

 If there is a package that otherwise matches core or nonfree repos,
 but has a possible patent issue it ends up in tainted.

 As for splitting up tainted in tainted-core/tainted-nonfree,
 I dont think it's really worth it, and no-one really argued
 for it when we discussed the mirror layout...

 Hello.

 I've had a rather vague idea about standardising the virtual provides
 in the distro, there should be:
 Provides: %{name}-devel
 Provides: lib%{name}-devel

 either both of them in _all_ packages, or one of them in _all_
 packages, so that we don't have to check urpmq --provides all the
 time. Personally, I am more inclined on having them both, so as not to
 break already working specs.

 For example:
 $ urpmq --provides lib64gudev1.0-devel-166-5.mga1.x86_64
 libgudev-devel[== 166-5.mga1]
 pkgconfig(gudev-1.0)[== 166]
 devel(libgudev-1.0(64bit))
 lib64gudev1.0-devel[== 166-5.mga1]
 lib64gudev1.0-devel(x86-64)[== 166-5.mga1]

 only libgudev-devel, so if I put BR gudev-devel in a spec it won't
 work, whereas I'd expect it to work since some other packages have
 such similar provides:
 $ urpmq --provides lib64dbus-1-devel
 libdbus-1-devel[== 1.4.1-3.mga1]
 libdbus-devel[== 1.4.1-3.mga1]
 dbus-devel[== 1.4.1-3.mga1]
 [...]

 over time).

if it was on libgp11_0 we would have been able to rebuilde seahorse

 I'm not 100% sure it's all that different anyway. The same issue would
 be true of sticking two libs into one lib package when they happen to
 have the same major, but they later diverge and one of them changes
 major before the other...

Yes this is why i think we should enforce one lib per package.

 I guess it's just good practice to keep things
 separated out and I'm not sure the current lib policy actively
 encourages the opposite.

 I'd say this is more of clarification of the policy :)

Maybe but clarification is always good :D

 I didn't keep the stdout, although the fact that the package is installed is
 logged in /var/log/messages, the conflict errors are not.  However, the last
 ones I noticed were gnome-themes-standard 3.0 conflicting with
 gnome-themes-standard 2.32 (many, many files).

 You can probably reproduce this fairly easily by doing a fresh install of
 MGA 1 and then doing an --auto-select with the Cauldron repositories.

Conflicts should be fixed now.

 In order to separate the upgrade issues, I just did a fresh Cauldron GNOME
 install in a VBox VM, and tried to log in.

 I get the flat (not striped) blue background, probably because your
 dependency fix hasn't come through yet, and I see the Activity     Date
 Username flash briefly at the top of the screen and then disappear.  If you
 leave it that way, every 5 or 10 seconds the Oops, something went wrong
 screen flashes and disappears.

 If I try to install gnome-themes-standard, I get conflicts with
 gnome-themes-2.32, which has been pulled in by epiphany-2.32.  Removing
 gnome-themes-2.32 (along with epiphany) allows gnome-themes-standard to
 install cleanly, at which point I get exactly the same behavior but with a
 blue striped background.

do you have urpmi log this time ?

 The only error I can find is in /var/log/messages, and says gnome-session:
 Warning - application gnome-shell.desktop failed to register before
 timeout.  There is no mention in dmesg of libnsl or gnome.

do you have the logs from ~/.xsession-errors when the session fails please ?

 In short, the libnsl issue seems to be upgrade-related, but everything else
 is just broken out-of-the-box.

 If you try to reproduce this, you have to use 128K video memory and enable
 3D acceleration in VBox, otherwise you get fallback mode, which appears to
 work fine.

 I have the same situation, and gnome-control-center is installed.

 Confirmed, same problem.

 Just switched a Mageia 1 to Cauldron via urpmi, installed task-gnome, no
 errors.
 After reboot and selecting Gnome3 the desktop builds nicely but as
 soon as I start any application after a couple of seconds I get the
 same error message, pressing OK does a restart of the xserver and
 I'm back at login.

Do you have errors in your .xsession-errors ?

 before at Mandriva. We took in account the feedback of people on forum,
 on ml, nd those we have seen during events. We also discussed with
 others distributions developers we know from Opensuse, Fedora, Debian,
 Ubuntu about their release cycle, the choices they made and their
 reasons.

 Before going to the proposal, a few point of vocabulary :

 Release cycle mean the time between 2 releases.

 Hello, i would be in favor of proposal 2.

For not beeing in sync with upstream projects ( gnome, kde, ... ) this
is for me a false problem because we won't provide the first
release ( like gnome 3.2 or kde 4.7 ) but we will be able to release a
bugfix release ( gnome 3.2.x , kde 4.7.5 ) which means less work for
QA team during stable release.

This proposal allow us to do more long term projects too.

I think that with proposition 3 we will have less visibility because
ppl will have real news of us only once per year.

 3 is rumored to have a lot of ideological change, and probably the usual
 GNOME removal of working stuff that people expect to be there (GDM config).
  It would be very nice to have a tool to switch back and forth for

 can be removed via rpm --nodeps prior to reinstalling the other release, so
 that urpmi doesn't try to remove the world to make the change.

 In the past time, there's KDE3 and KDE4 co-exist together in the repository,

 maybe we can do it again?

 AFAIK, the .la removal was not discussed, so starting by saying we
 remove them now because last time, we didn't discussed and it broke lots
 of thing is a little bit weird.

 https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/RemovingLaFiles

 Seems some distributions misunderstand the need and changed the wiki
 page. Removing .la files is needed however, otherwise you'll quickly mix
 distribution installed libraries and self-compiled libraries.

 Difficulty is that this only works when you remove *all* .la files. If
 only one is left compilation is broken.

i will try a new way to remove them and btw we maybe should add a

 Filing bug reports is not a bad idea, even if the new package will go to
 backports. Just explain a little why it is important (to fix this in a
 stable release).

 We probably need a new version in bugzilla because mga1+backports is
 basically a new distro. A bug in backports shouldn't be filed against
 1 IMHO.

 As I said in my original mail I really don't think backports is the
 right approach.

 I'd prefer to have a 3rd party repo than abuse backports to get the
 missing packages.

 I think updates would be the right place.

 little* cleaned for allow a commit.

 - remove buildroot def

 thanks

Hi,

Why this need a push ? this doesn't fix anything for cauldron.
Why do you have removed clean buildroot at %install ?

 Hello,

 The current default asian font of libreoffice writer is 'Droid Sans'.
 Unfortunately, it cannot display any asian font characters. And
 libreoffice does not use any system font for fallback while the used
 font does not have characters of wanted language[note].

 I would like to suggest if we could change it to 'Droid Sans
 fallback', which would be able to display asian characters correctly.
 The default western and asian fonts of libreoffice writer can be
 changed in libreoffice options manually. Though it would be better if
 the default font setting just does it right.

 note: The wanted font fallback behavior is explained with more
 detail in bug 751:
 https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=751

 Thanks,

 Was the protobuf spec perhaps reimported without properly libification
 and overwrote the old version?
