But given their content, I don't any added value to keep it separated from the main mageia-dev one... It's not a list, it's the contact address for packagers team listed here: https://www.mageia.org/en/contact/ Let's rephrase my question then: what the point of a public contact address for packagers team ? Who is supposed to send what ? You can just filter it out, if it disturbs you as it does have a different receiver address then the dev-ml. But it would be hardly fair to ask the team leaders to answer those mails alone. And as I see it, the amount of mails coming in that way is not all that large. Just a few mails per month... Indeed, but I still don't see any added value. -- BOFH excuse #242: Software uses US measurements, but the OS is in metric...
Re: [Mageia-dev] what's the purpose of this list ?
Le 03/04/2013 13:33, Oliver Burger a écrit : I do think it is important to have contact addresses. Not only mailing lists, you have to subscribe. It's the only way to get questions and feedback from people who only have a simple question or feedback to give and don't want to subscribe an ml for that which they would have to unsubscribe again after they get the answer they are interested in. The only question - as I see it - is, who should get those mails? And I think the best idea is for the whole teams in question to get them because otherwise you will have to find someone with too much time on his hands. And by the way, just to state a number about the incoming traffic using this mail address All in all I found 5 - in words FIVE - threads in my gmail account, which were addressed to the packagers@ address, including an mail from bugzilla about a bug report complaining about the many mails, the contributor gets that way... I have to wonder if that is not an allergic reaction to user interference... That's not a reaction to user inference, that's a reaction to have a gazillion different ways to achieve the same result, whereas a single workflow would offer better garanties of equal consideration. If the point of this adress is to allow end users willing to ask question/request assistance/whatever, but consider that's not worth the 30s effort of subscribing a mailing list or creating a bugzilla account, that's OK, as long as: 1) it's documented somewhere 2) people receiving those mails are volonteers to handle it Regarding 2, I'm not. -- BOFH excuse #221: The mainframe needs to rest. Yet another reason to follow a procedure to remove packages from the distribution, instead of just adding it to task-obsoletes Last upstream version was released in 2009 and last git commit was in 2008, so it looks like it's not under active development any more. Le 26/03/2013 15:30, David Walser a écrit : AFAUI, the nss_ldap+pam_ldap should be replced by the nss-pam-ldapd+sssd combo no? If so, then a further couple of tweaks are needed in drakauth methinks. I thought you could use one or the other (nss-pam-ldapd/sssd)? Exactly. And sssd is much more than just nss-pam-ldapd, it also deals with nss resources caching (as nscd), credentials caching (as pam_ccreds), and multiple user account databases. Also, something should really obsolete the nss_ldap/pam_ldap packages so they get replaced with something else that works for people that already have them installed. If that's done, pam_ldap will be automatically removed from the mirrors anyway. Probably nss-pam-ldapd is the right place to do this. Just installing nss-pam-ldapd won't make it works automagically, so the added value of making it obsoleting pam_ldap and nss_ldap is very discussable, as it will turn something working (with obsolete software) unto something non-working. Also, recurrent argument as 'we should obsoletes X so as to remove it from mirror' is still a non-sense. Removing content on the mirror is an internal administrative issue. The whole issue should rather be documented in release notes, so as to have admins handle the upgrade explicitely, rather than trying to adresse it automagically. -- BOFH excuse #391: We already sent around a notice about that.

Re: [Mageia-dev] Help needed with ldap server.and gdm.
Le 23/03/2013 21:41, David W. Hodgins a écrit : Any suggestions? You're mixing issues here. pam only deals with authentication and authorization. The problem is not to make a choice from pam_unix, or pam_pwdb, or pam_tcb, but to express the fact than an user can authenticate from either local password database or ldap passwd database: auth sufficient pam_unix auth sufficient pam_ldap use_first_pass auth required pam_deny.so Most modules accept debug option to help troubleshooting. Once you resolved your authentication and authorization issues for both users (console login, su, whatever), you can deal with the list of people enumerated in gdm, but in gdm configuration. Also, the documentation you're using is a bit outdated: - bdb makes more sense today than ldbm as storage backend - ssha is a better choice than crypt for default password encoding scheme - using a rootdn with a password defined in slapd.conf is quite discussable - ACLs such as 'access to dn=.*,dc=mylan,dc=net' would better be defined as 'access to dn.subtree=dc=mylan,dc=net' (no regex involved) - examples given use rfc2307 schema, whereas rfc2307bis (group membership defined through dn, not uids) is a better choice - and more important: nss_ldap and pam_ldap are getting deprecated nowadays, in favor or nss_pam_slapd, or sssd. -- BOFH excuse #235: The new frame relay network hasn't bedded down the software loop transmitter yet.

I am using default mirrorlist created by edit-urpm-sources.pl. Indeed it does, and even worse, if your network requires a proxy, this totally does not work. Even if you have a proxy configured through drakconf, it still won't use it for rsync. This technically is correct, as that proxy setting is supposed to be just for http/https/ftp, and globally setting the RSYNC_PROXY variable along with those may be undesirable and cause problems with using rsync across your local network. Still, it'd be nice if this could be handled better somehow. I'm just not sure what the right solution is.
