[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 617067] Re: Collections / View navigation - usability problems

2010-09-09 Thread Ruslan Kabalin
I think that active (current) collection tab should not be a link. It
might make navigation more intuitive for those who see it the first
time. When there are only two tabs it is a bit puzzling to find out
which tab you are currently on. I clicked several times on the current
tab trying to switch to another one, thinking that the current is green
(raw theme) for some reason.

Bug description:
View Collections, the way they are currently on master, are confusing for users
seeing them for the first time.

People may think that they're a way of organising and ordering views into
folders (for the owner to find them more easily). That's another feature that
has been requested by people on the forums but it's not addressed by this stuff
at all.

Part of the problem is that the name 'Collection' doesn't really express the
fact that the only point in putting views together into these 'things' is just
so that views can be linked to each other when they're being displayed to
others.

Comment from David Drummond on the forums:

I *do* see collections as something that could evolve in a lot of different
useful directions - something that could come in an iterative process - and
that may cover a way to organise views. Not quite there yet though granted. For
that reason I'd suggest leaving them as collections might be a good idea to
drive that direction of development in future iterations - rather than having
to rename something again down the track.

If that's unreasonable, then maybe something more explicit to the actual
initial use case is needed. Perhaps "Navigation Lists"? or even "Manage View
Menus" (and change the blocktype to "View Menu").

Comment from Richard Wyles via email:

Yes, there's also a problem with a View only being able to belong to one
Collection - users won't understand the access challenge/conflict which is the
reason? Can't Title, Description and adding Views to Collection be all on one
page? Then the action could be on the My Views page and be called Connect Views
or something. Keen to be included in discussions like this as the more menu
items and pages then it becomes harder to achieve good usability. The other
route to this via the Access page dashboard.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 632308] Re: User can submit view for assesment to the group where s/he has admin or tutor role

2010-09-09 Thread Ruslan Kabalin
I have applied agreed scenario. Apart of that, own views will not be
shown in the list of views submitted for assessment, unless user is the
only member of the groups with view assessment permissions. (This is to
allow last admin to release own view if other members with assessment
permissions has been demoted to ordinary members after the view had been
submitted).

Bug description:
Not sure if it is a bug. User is able to submit a view for assessment to the
group where s/he is the admin or tutor (i.e. submit a view for assessment to
oneself). I suggest to fix it either by disabling such possibility completely,
or allowing it only if there are other tutors or admins in the group (in which
case user will not be able to assess own view despite the role). Fix is ready,
just need a confirmation from community.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 634580] [NEW] Admin edits of user account details can be overwritten by open session

2010-09-09 Thread Richard Mansfield
Public bug reported:

If an admin edits a user on the admin edit user page, and that user is
currently logged in, then the changes made by the admin can be
overwritten the next time that user browses around on the site and their
session details are saved to the database.

Perhaps, saving the form on the edit user page should call
remove_user_sessions for the edited user (like when suspending a user).
It would be nice if the admin was given a warning ("if you submit this
form then will be logged out") whenever the edited user has a
session that hasn't expired.

Video files that can be embedded into a block can have a description. It only
shows up when the files is added via "File(s) to download" or "Folder", but not
when they are embedded. It would be very useful to have the description show up
below the video, e.g. to give brief instructions to start the video, display
the credit etc. because then you don't have to use a textbox for that.

Furthermore, you only get to the details page from the file or folder download
blocks, but not when you click on the file link in the embedded media block
virtually not allowing to view the detail page altogether.

Once a user has exported something from Moodle and continued to Mahara, it's
not easy for them to get back to exactly where they were.

It would be nice if this was possible, by showing them a message with a link

Because of the ajax-y nature of the files section, the message would stick
around even if the user decides to move the file, which would be a good feature.

The mechanics of showing the message need to be decided.

Blocktypes that render themselves with pagination for views (e.g. My Friends,

export.

You end up with pagination arrows that don't work in the HTML export, and
javascript being output in the leap2a content.

We should initially turn pagination off when rendering for export, and
eventually we should perhaps rewrite the pagination links in html export so
that they work on the exported site.

The presence of the 'Delete all notifications' button in
/account/activity/index.php seems to break various actions on the page.

If the button is present then:
* clicking the button results in it being replaced with the list of messages
and the messages not being removed from the correct listing. The messages are
not actually deleted; and
* deleting an individual message results in the delete all button being
replaced with the list of all messages. The message is deleted but this is not
reflected correctly on the page.

Additionally, Packed.js reports an error on page load. Removing the button
completely results in the page working as expected.

I've had a go at debugging this but can't work out what the problem is so far.

Tested in Google Chrome and Firefox under Debian.

Status in Mahara ePortfolio: Fix Released

Bug description:
Hello,

"Do you really want to delete this View? It cannot be undone." –> Some users
may ask if their files and blog entries will also be lost when the view is
deleted.

Maybe a sentence should be added along the lines of "All your files and blog
entries that you linked in this view will still be available. However, if you
have written text directly into text boxes, this will be gone."

BUT if text boxes also get the artefact status then the second sentence becomes
redundant.

Maybe we can also provide a link to the portfolio export. That could be used as
backup (they could always do an HTML export to freeze their portfolio in time).
E.g. "If you want to create a copy of your portfolio in the state it was in
before deleting, you may want to [link]export[/link] it before you delete this
view."

As suggested here:

we should look into using these new Purifier options:

  http://htmlpurifier.org/live/configdoc/plain.html#Output.FlashCompat

This may allow us to remove all of the custom filters we currently have.

One of the antispam checks we have looks for an MX record in a DNS zone. If a
domain doesn't have one, then the message is marked as spam.

This is wrong because according to the DNS spec, if an MX record is not
present, it uses the default A record.

So we should either remove this check altogether or extend it to look for A and
 records.

The first option is probably best since there will be very few zones that don't
have an A record I suspect.

Now we have a translated jscalendar Japanese language file "calendar-jp.js" on
"js/jscalendar/lang".

The translation is outdated, encoding of this file is SJIS and file name is
"calendar-jp.js" not "calendar-ja.js".
For this reason, users who use Japanese language file for Mahara can't popup
calendar.

So we need newly translated UTF-8 "calendar-ja.js" file for jscalendar.
I just translated "calendar-ja.js"  based on ""calendar-en.js".

I attached the translated language file to this report.
Please add the file to "js/jscalendar/lang" directory.

Thank you.

Status in Mahara ePortfolio: Fix Released
Status in Mahara 1.2 series: Fix Released

Bug description:
When Mahara is hosted behind a reverse proxy, files uploaded are not recognized
as their proper types. For example: if I go to "My Portfolio" and "My Files" to
upload an gzip file, the file will upload properly but will not be properly
recognized as being an archive. The result is that the generic file icon is
used and the "Unzip" link is not displayed.

After looking at the code, I can see that Mahara is depending on the browser to
send the proper mime-type when the file is uploaded. In our case, this value is
being set to a generic value (application/octet-stream) when passed through our
reverse proxy. The code that is responsible for handling new archive files
(from archive/file/lib.php) is here:

public static function new_archive($path, $data) {
if (!isset($data->filetype)) {
return self::archive_from_file($path, $data);
}
$descriptions = self::archive_file_descriptions();
$validtypes = self::archive_mime_types();
if (isset($validtypes[$data->filetype])) {
return self::archive_from_file($path, $data,
$descriptions[$validtypes[$data->filetype]->description]);
}
return false;
}

This code checks for a mime-type first (sent by the browser) and if it finds
one, assumes that it is correct. Perhaps it would be better if the code tried
to determine the mime-type using the file extension in the case where the
browser sends "application/octet-stream". Like this:

public static function new_archive($path, $data) {
if (!isset($data->filetype)) {
return self::archive_from_file($path, $data);
}
if ($data->filetype == "application/octet-stream" &&
$result = self::archive_from_file($path, $data)) {
return $result;
}
$descriptions = self::archive_file_descriptions();
$validtypes = self::archive_mime_types();
if (isset($validtypes[$data->filetype])) {
return self::archive_from_file($path, $data,
$descriptions[$validtypes[$data->filetype]->description]);
}
return false;
}

When I make this change, everything works properly for me.

I just found out that email address is not fetched from LDAP server when a user

While browsing through auth/ldap/lib.php function:
authenticate_user_account(...) I've noticed that $ldapattributes does not
contain "emailfield" entry. Was this forgotten or excluded purposely?

I've added (after line 125)

 $ldapattributes['email']  = $this->config['emailfield' ];

also changed line 133

 $fieldstoimport = array('firstname', 'lastname', 'email');

The problem is solved, at least for me.

Both errors are because I have no groups and no submitted views - which is
probably unlikely in a production environment. However, I think we should
probably fix these.

Easy fix is to test the value, and if false, set it as an array.

Bug description:
As reported on the Debian tracker,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=591200, we do not ship the
source for the flash player we use in the internalmedia blocktype.

That video player comes from Moodle and is normally proprietary
(http://www.longtailvideo.com/players/jw-flv-player/), but Moodle got
permission to distribute a version of it under the GPL:

http://git.moodle.org/gw?p=moodle.git;a=blob;f=filter/mediaplugin/flvplayer.README.txt;hb=cvshead

Eventually, we won't need flash to play audio and video in browsers (thanks to
HTML5) but for now we need it and so I propose to replace our old player with a
modern one that's becoming quite popular out there:

  http://flowplayer.org/

It's in active development, is unambiguously under the GPL, comes with
corresponding source and claims to support iPads and iPods for example.

Using Mahara 1.3 beta 4:

When I try to copy a view I get the following error:

"Mahara: Site unavailable. A nonrecoverable error occurred. This probably means

I took a look at the php error logs and it looked like a malformed SQL
statement. I did some searching and found the problem. The contactinfo and
profileinfo blocktype lib.php files were escaping quotes improperly when
building a SQL query. They were escaping double quotes when encapsulated in
single quotes, which meant \"owner\" was taken literally and was generating a
syntax error.

Files:
/artefact/internal/blocktype/contactinfo/lib.php  lines 152 to 154

$artefactids = get_column_sql('

rights, the new user had been added as well though I did not get a message on
the view access page telling me that I update the collection access at the same
time.

When I go to the view access page of another view in the same collection, I
still have the old access rights in there.

As collection access rights overwrite view access rights, I would disable the
"Edit View Access" link on a view that sits in a collection. The user cannot
get to it from the view overview page - why should he get to it on the actual
view? That would make it easier to edit the access rights for a collection
really only on the collection page.

Bug description:
When a user creates a new collection and they get to the views stage access for
each views access is updated immediately as it is added.

This means that if a user decides that they don't want the collection anymore
and cancel then the view access is already updated and they have lost original
settings on views.

The user might also just add a view and then immediately decide that wasn't the
right decision and remove from the list.

This is an issue for both new and existing collections.

The help file does mention this is going to happen, but I'm thinking it is not
the most appropriate event for access updating to occur on anyway.

Solutions might be to:

For new collections:
a) update access only on the final stage when user saves collection completely
b) alert user somehow that views are going to have their access updated when
they navigate past the views page

For existing collections:
a) only update when the user is completely finished with the page (clicking
'Done') and ensure it is clear that the access will be updated at this time

Any other ideas?

Status in Mahara ePortfolio: Fix Released

Bug description:
Hello Mahara people,

I'm running Mahara 1.2.2 with several institutions, each using a different LDAP
server for authentication.
A normal procedure is when guest is logging in, Mahara loops through array of
all LDAP servers defined as institutions auth methods. When binding within
certain LDAP is successful loop will be braked and Mahara will login user.
However if one of LDAP servers is experiencing difficulties, i.e. network
problems, server unavailable, expired SSL certificate etc, Mahara will throw an
exception and loop will be braked, resulting as bad-login. In another words, if
any of LDAP servers goes offline authentication will be "disabled" for all
institutions despite the fact that each institution uses different LDAP server.
Of course if first LDAP in array is offline the rest is useless as loop is
interrupted by exception, if last one is offline the chance of bad-login is
much lower as previous one may pass...

 The problem is in auth/ldap/lib.php line #146

throw new AuthUnknownUserException('Cannot connect to any LDAP hosts');

I solved the issue by commenting this line and adding code for logging LDAP
errors, though I would like to avoid code hacking. Will someone consider this
for upcoming releases?

Thanks for reading.

Cheers,

Andrej

Admins who receive an objectionable content notification might not be on the
access list for the view that's reported, so they get an 'access denied'
message.

They could look at the view by logging in as the view owner, but they have no
way to find out who the owner is when all they have is the view id.

A quick fix might be to change the objectionable content notification so it
doesn't link to the view itself, but to a page in the admin section with
information about the view owner and instructions to log in as the user to see
the view.

A better option might be to create a secret url token for the view (you can
make these invisible to the view owner) and use the secret url in the link from
the new admin screen (or directly from the notification).

Bug description:
They can only be found by their preferred name, which kind of makes sense if
it's a student doing the search, but staff should always be able to find other
users by real name.

I'm not even sure that this should apply to students. It does make sense in as
far as: they can't see real names of other users who have a preferred name so
therefore they shouldn't be able to search on them either. However, if the user
they are trying to find has used an obscure nickname that the user doing the
search isn't aware of, it could make it very difficult for these users to find
each other.

Perhaps we need a forum debate on this?

I know this was user error (incorrect url), but at the same time I know our

We have two institutions. One is No Institution and other is ORG_NAME.

In both institutions the first name and last name are locked.

Now, if you unlock these fields in ORG_NAME institution than users in this
institution should be able to change these fields in their profile. But they
are not able to change these as fields are still locked for them even after
unlocked in site administration.

Now, including above changes if you also unlock these fields in No Institution
than users from the ORG_NAME institution are able to change these fields as
they are unlocked for them.

Is it normal? Is it a bug or feature?

If it is a bug okay I can report it to tracker. Wink

If this is a feature than seems irrelevant. Laughing

Note : when these fields are unlocked in No Institutions and locked in
ORG_NAME institution than users of ORG_NAME are not able to change these fields
in profile. This is fair.

Bug description:
When inserting images into a view description via the HTML control, the image
is loaded into the view index page, summary area. The idea of doing this was to
add a banner to a view.

This could be achieved with a view box, but with a 1 column view layout, the
image is centralised with no option to align it left.

Also view boxes don't allow the title field to be empty, so I end up with a
title for the banner. The best way around it was to insert the image into the
view description HTML but this caused the issue as seen in the screenshot.

Screenshot attached.

Bug description:
If you have a block that has something in it that is floated - e.g. ... in the example I tried - then that makes the height of
the block be 0. This means, among other things, that on the view edit screen,
the controls for the block below appear way above where they should be (as
they're positioned). See the attached screenshot for what I mean. Apparently on
IE7 the behaviour may be even worse..

Potentially we could fix this with some kind of hack to add a clearer div - or
some other kind of solution that will clear the bottom of the block below the
float. The problem I have with that is that in a multicolumn layout, the
clearing div will clear below anything in any of the other columns too, which
will look wrong.

I hate to say it, but maybe we'll need to look at using s for the view
layout - or some other positioning mechanism - to make it work properly...

Deleting users can leave groups orphaned with no group admins. The site admin

This needs to paginate tasks properly by creating a new html page for every
page of tasks. The blog HTML export does this.

Ideally the solution to this would pick out the pagination part from
HtmlExportBlog's dump_export_data function, and put it into some common
function in export/html/lib.php (possibly in the HtmlExportArtefactPlugin
class).

Then plans (and other artefacts we write later that need pagination) won't have
to reimplement it.
