Title:
  On custom layout builder, disable the "add row" button when you're at
  the maximum number of rows

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  We shouldn't display the "add a row" button when it won't do anything.
  Or at least, we should display it in a grayed-out "disabled" mode.

  To replicate:

  1. Create a page
  2. Go to "Edit layout"
  3. Expand "Advanced options"
  4. Expand "Create custom layout"
  5. Click "Add a row" 5 times, each time adding one row, until you have 6.

  Actual result: "Add a row" looks exactly the same, but now clicking on it
won't do anything
  Expected result: "Add a row" should be grayed out or disappear in order to
indicate that it's no longer usable. If you delete a row, it should re-enable.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1100836] Re: Add pages to multiple collections

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
I spent some time a few months ago trying to implement this feature. It
turns out to be a lot more complicated in terms of implementation that
it is conceptually.

What the problem boils down to is that currently collections don't have
their own access control settings. Instead, we simulate this by syncing
up the access controls of all the pages in a collection so that they
match up. In order to have a comprehensive ability to put a single page
into multiple collections, we'd either need to decouple permissions from
collections (so that the pages in a collection can have separate
permissions from one another; kind of like a Flickr photo "set"), or
we'd have to let collections have their own permissions.

Letting collections have their own permissions turns out to require a
fairly comprehensive change in Mahara, with nearly every script that
checks page access (which is a lot of them) needing a bit of a rewrite.

"ungluing" collections so that the pages in them can have different
access permissions, is a bit simpler, but turns out to have a few weird
corner cases that make it very complicated. These include the
"accessconfhash" column (which is how we determine the checkboxes that
allow you to say "set all these pages to have the same permissions"),
and group submissions.

Another area of tricky corner cases has to do with Collection URL's.
Currently, there is no true URL for a Collection by itself; instead, the
URL for the Collection is the URL of the first page in the Collection.
So, if Pages can belong to multiple Collections, you have to consider
whether you'll create a separate URL for the Page-in-that-Collection,
and how you'll deal with the legacy URLs to the Collection out there
which now just go to the Page-by-itself, and so forth.

I wound up abandoning the effort because it had the potential to cause
widespread bugs in Mahara (since it was such a broad code change) for a
relatively modest pay-off.

Nonetheless, this would still be a good feature to include, because it
makes no logical sense for it to be absent. It'll just require some
careful thought and extensive testing.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 548311] Re: Support for Time Zones of users in Mahara

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
This would still be great to have, but it'll be quite an undertaking. As
others have mentioned, the most common way of doing this is to store the
dates in UTC in the database, and then before displaying it to the user,
converting it to that user's chosen timezone.

The annoying thing is that we'll need to track down every place in the
code that a date is displayed to the user and do this conversion. A lot
of these will have been passed through format_date(), so putting a
conversion in there will cover all of those, but there are sure to be
quite a few where format_date() was bypassed.

We'll also need a one-time script to convert all the stored dates in the
database from their current time to UTC.

  At minimum, the link should be clickable, e.g. automatically like in
  forums when you enter a link even without linking it directly. But
  even better if these fields also had the tinyMCE editor available.

  Did a quick search here and couldn't easily find an existing request for

  Unlike this eduforge tracker when I created my account, where I was prompted

  Hope this request can find its way into your todo list soon.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1243018] [NEW] Add a visual indicator for when the "add column" and "remove column" buttons are disabled

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
Public bug reported:

This applies to the optional column add/remove buttons that users can
activate on the page builder.

To replicate:

1. Click on your "Account settings" page
2. Under "General account options" activate the "Show controls to add and
remove columns when editing a page" setting.
3. Now, edit a page
4. On each column you'll see arrow buttons to add an adjacent column, and a red
button to remove that column.
5. Keep adding columns until you have 5 columns in a single row.

Expected result: The "add" buttons should go away or be dimmed out, to indicate
you can add no more rows
Actual result: The "add" buttons remain in place, but clicking on them does
nothing.

6. Now start clicking the red delete icons to delete columns
7. Continue until you have just one column left

Expected result: The red "delete" button should disappear from that column, to
indicate that it can't be deleted
Actual result: The red "delete" button remains in place, but clicking on it
does nothing.

On a related note, the add/remove column buttons don't properly update
the "Edit layout" screen to indicate what your current layout is.

But... I think it's a fairly obscure feature, so leaving this on "low"
priority.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1243015] [NEW] On custom layout builder, disable the "add row" button when you're at the maximum number of rows

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
Public bug reported:

We shouldn't display the "add a row" button when it won't do anything.
Or at least, we should display it in a grayed-out "disabled" mode.

To replicate:

1. Create a page
2. Go to "Edit layout"
3. Expand "Advanced options"
4. Expand "Create custom layout"
5. Click "Add a row" 5 times, each time adding one row, until you have 6.

Actual result: "Add a row" looks exactly the same, but now clicking on it won't
do anything
Expected result: "Add a row" should be grayed out or disappear in order to
indicate that it's no longer usable. If you delete a row, it should re-enable.

  This config variable is both undocumented, and no default is given. I
  think that we should try and detect some reasonable default and give
  up if none possible. Documentation could also be good ;)

  It appears to be only used in that one place, as a flag to set up more

Bug description:
  I think it would be a great idea if we went through the code, found as
  many of the config options as we can (by searching for $CFG and
  get_config()), and made sure they were properly documented in one of
  three ways:

  1. If it's a setting that should be hard-coded and most users will
  want/need to set it, put it in config-dist.php

  2. If it's a setting that should be hard-coded but is experimental,
  advanced, or less likely to be used, put it in lib/config-defaults.php

  3. Or give it a UI front-end setting on the Admin pages. But keep in
  mind possible security implications -- anything settable by the UI can
  be abused by XSS, so for instance filesystem paths should not be set
  in the UI because that makes a handy escalation from XSS to
  filesystem.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1084351] Re: get_config('cacertinfo') will be null in default installs unless overridden, a default should be used

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
What this config does is provides for PHP curl to verify the
certificates of HTTPS servers that it connects to. Without this, it
apparently just trusts anything.

We can perhaps copy the logic from
https://tracker.moodle.org/browse/MDL-39356 , where Moodle recently
implemented something similar. They appear to have included the
cacert.pem from http://curl.haxx.se/docs/caextract.html

Note that if we did fix this, there appear to be a few other places we'd
want to update as well, such as the api/xmlrpc libraries. Searching for
CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER helps turn up  afew.

  Usability / Accessibility Enhancement

  Hi, I've had a number of users raise an issue with how close together
  the edit and delete buttons are on Mahara pages. While there is an
  'are you sure' message before deleting some objects (eg journal
  entries), it's not available everywhere (eg in the file section).
  Rather than slowing down the process for deleting unwanted content,
  simply increasing the space between the two buttons (and perhaps their
  size) would make them easier and safer to use - both for people with
  poor mouse control and those using mobile/tablet devices.

  Thanks, Gordon.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1067724] Re: Unable to read language directory

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
I was unable to replicate the error in 1.5_STABLE. From looking at the
glob() documentation ( http://php.net/glob ) I note that the glob
function is meant to just return an empty array if it can't find
anything, or false on error. So, it's possible that some environments
may be causing glob to error out, and the code isn't handling that
properly.

There's also this: "Note: On some systems it is impossible to
distinguish between empty match and an error. "

It's unclear whether that means that an empty match returns false, or
whether it means that an error returns an empty array. But the return
value that Jan noted (nearly 1 year ago today) is what you get when you
cast boolean false as an array:

var_dump((array) false);

 array(1) {
   [0]=>
   bool(false)
 }

  The admin with digest on will not receive the empty message, but those

  Reason is because it tries to store the data in a temporary table to

  A couple of solutions:
  - take off the non null constraint on the temporary table (will fix similar

  - set the message to be required (won't fix similar issues if any)

  When the HTML editor is set to "Enable" in the "General settings" on
  /admin/site/options.php before any user makes it onto the site and
  only later does the site admin switch it to "User-defined", all users
  loose the HTML editor though most would probably want to keep it.

  Could the site setting be changed so that when a site admin goes from
  "Enable" to "User-defined", the HTML editor is still the chosen
  setting for users on their accounts settings page? That way, the
  majority will not have to change their settings and only the few who
  do not want / can work with an HTML editor can make the change.

  watchlist" at the bottom and the confirmation message "This page was
  added to your watchlist".

  This is a bit misleading as the artefact is not a page. Since you are
  on a web page, the "Add page to watchlist" link could be misunderstood
  as the artefact page being added to the watchlist, but it is actually
  the page in which the artefact appears that is added.

  It would already help, if the confirmation message read either 'The
  page in which this artefact appears was added to your watchlist' or
  'The page "[name of the page]" was added to your watchlist'.

  limit of (by default) 5. This means for 15 items, only 2 pages are
  shown, when next is clicked, the pages correct themselves to 3.

  This also happens at /artefact/blog/view/

  I would suggest changing this to use the dropdown selector, defaulting
  to a chosen number.

  Imported content from Moodle stored as text/plain instead of text/html

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  When configuring a Mahoodle install, exported content from forum,
  blog, and wiki modules appears to be stored in Mahara's database (in
  artefact_file_files) with the filetype text/plain, rather than
  text/html. This prevents users from embedding the imported content as
  an HTML artefact within a page in Mahara (it instead has to be added
  as a downloadable file).

  This appears to be finfo() working as expected, reading the contents
  of the file and not seeing opening HTML tags; however, downloading
  imported content from the incoming folder in Mahara and re-uploading
  it appears to properly set the mimetype correctly to text/html with no
  change to the file's contents.

  Moodle 2.2.1

Title:
  function get_file in api/xmlrpc/lib.php not respecting
  usersuniquebyusername

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  When I hook my 1 Mahara installation up to 2 (or more) Moodle
  installations, and try to push content from Moodle to Mahara, I
  encounter an error.

  Failed to start communication with remote server: remote server error: code:
, message: Could not find user BLAH for https://BLAH.BLAH.ac.ukERROR 4:
  4: remote server error: code: , message: Could not find user BLAH for
https://BLAH.BLAH.ac.uk

  This error is from xmlrpc/lib.php get_file() (line 286) which calls
  find_remote_user($username, $REMOTEWWWROOT).

  I am fairly sure there is a bug in xmlrpc/lib.php find_remote_user()
  because if I change the authentication of a user in Mahara to be from
  a specific Moodle, I can export from that Moodle but not the other,
  and vice versa.

  This makes sense if each user from different systems (even if they
  have the same username) is treated as a different user, which is
  default behaviour. However I have the config option of
  usersuniquebyusername set so that users from different systems with
  the same username are treated as the same user.

  $cfg->usersuniquebyusername = true;

  In this case I would expect Mahara NOT to try and confirm that the
  source of the user is the same one listed within Mahara as their
  authentication method.

  My gut reaction is that the find_remote_user function in
  xmlrpc/lib.php (line 125) should be checking for the CFG value of
  usersuniquebyusername and if set then specifically NOT discriminate by
  authentication method.

  So something along the lines of the following, changing line 134

  from:

  $authinstances =
  auth_get_auth_instances_for_institution($institution);

  to:

  if (get_config('usersuniquebyusername')) {
$authinstances = auth_get_auth_instances();
  }
  else {
$authinstances = auth_get_auth_instances_for_institution($institution);
  }

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 794364] Re: Moodle Portfolio plugin for Mahara creates a bunch of identically-named journals in the Mahara side

2013-10-21 Thread Aaron Wells
I've noticed this as well. There is a Moodle "portfolio" plugin that
allows data from Moodle to be exported to Mahara. Each time you do this,
it creates a new Journal in Mahara with the name "data Imported from
Leap2A export from Moodle for {firstname lastname}".

It would be non-trivial to fix this, so it's not on our roadmap at the
moment unless we get some funding or there is a community contribution
for it.

I recently looked into fixing this for a client (who unfortunately
declined to fund its fixing). It turns out to be quite tricky. The way
the portfolio plugin works, is that it just generates a leap2a file with
the Moodle content, and then Mahara imports that fragmentary leap2a
file. Mahara's failsafe mode for importing a leap2a, when it's not able
to figure out any other content type to map it to, is to import it as a
new journal following that naming title.

There are a few possible fixes. Maybe the easiest would be to structure
the leap2a in a way that allows Mahara to process it into a Page or
something, or a journal with a better title.

Another way to go, according to my notes, there's a "steal_control()"
method one could use during the Moodle->Mahara export process which
would allow Mahara to drive the process a bit. Using this Mahara, could
present the user with a list of journals, and let the user pick which
one the content should wind up in. Then you'd need to add some metadata
to the leap2a file to indicate this, and then alter the Mahara leap2a
import process to pick up on that metadata and use it.

  Switch suspension reason and "Suspend" button around

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  All versions

  On the user bulk actions page /admin/bulk.php, the reason for the
  suspension comes after the "Suspend" button, which is not logical
  because you should first enter a reason before clicking the "Suspend"
  button.

  These two should be switched around which will also necessitate a lang
  string change.

Title:
  Handle timezone mismatch between webserver and DB (MySQL) server

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  If the timezone of the MySQL DB server doesn't match the timezone of
  the webserver (e.g. you're in AWS, where the DB server is always
  unchangeably UTC, and you want the webserver to be in a reasonable
  timezone for your users), then you get odd offset issues in, for
  example, the timestamps on forum posts.

  The webserver takes "now" in it's local timezone, formatted as a
  date/time (text), and puts it into the INSERT statement. The DB sees
  that, interprets it as the formatted date/time, but in it's time zone
  (UTC), which is some number of hours offset from the actual time. It
  stores that as a unix epoch time (seconds from 00:00:00 1-1-1970).
  When this is sent back to the client, the epoch time is converted back
  to the local timezone, and it displays as some number of hours offset.

  The simplest solution is to set the timezone on the MySQL connection, forcing
the text date/time values to be interpreted as being in that timezone; they are
stored correctly in epoch format, which will then display properly on viewing.
It's a simple patch:
  --- lib/dml.php.orig  2013-05-22 22:33:27.229452915 -0400
  +++ lib/dml.php   2013-05-22 22:35:44.403280333 -0400

   $db->Execute("SET SQL_MODE='POSTGRESQL'");
  +if(!empty($CFG->dbtimezone)) {
  +   $db->Execute("SET time_zone='$CFG->dbtimezone'");
  +}
   }

  It requires you to set dbtimezone in config.php, to the timezone of
  the server (so maybe it's a poorly named option; I'm open to
  alternative suggsions).

Bug description:
  As described by Robert while investigating another bug report:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/1219499/comments/5

  The problem where some images are not showing up is because they tend
  to be protocol relative urls to the images and the Mahara system tries
  to append a url to them but this makes the path incorrect.

  eg for slideshare (http://www.slideshare.net/rss/latest)

  There are image links in the feed like:

//cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/lptrnhc2008cbnnhtnghththutit360-130902225125-phpapp02-thumbnail-2.jpg

  and mahara sees this as a relative url and appends
  http://www.slideshare.net/ to the front if it which then makes

http://www.slideshare.net//cdn.slidesharecdn.com/ss_thumbnails/lptrnhc2008cbnnhtnghththutit360-130902225125-phpapp02-thumbnail-2.jpg

  which is an incorrect url and the image will not be found there

  Need to alter the code in htdocs/blocktype/externalfeed/lib.php from
  /src="(\/[^"]+)"/ to something that doesn't try and update protocol
  relative urls

  proxy exceptions feature is missing

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  The Proxy settings on Mahara are lacking the ability to set proxy
  exceptions for bypassing required hosts (we are on 1.5.x). I have seen
  that usually proxy exceptions are the part of proxy settings.

  We come across this issue while implementing SSO between our internal
  servers (not exposed to the world) where proxy settings are used to
  connect with outside world.

  To solve this we have implemented this feature, by copying Moodle 2.X
  code. This was the easiest way to achieve without wasting a time for
  writing this from scratch. It works and it has been tested with all
  scenarios.

  We are submitting the SVN patch with this as couldn't figure out how
  to commit these changes via Gerrit/Mahara GIT - at this stage it seems
  complicated to me. I tried this and failed at the step "scp -p -P
  29418 usern...@reviews.mahara.org:hooks/commit-msg .git/hooks/".

  I wonder whether the defined practice at
  https://wiki.mahara.org/index.php/Developer_Area/Pushing_Git_Commits
  is still valid or not.

2013-10-21 Thread Kristina Hoeppner
I still have the same problem on the latest code from master
(1.8.0RC3dev) and a fresh DB on Ubuntu 12.04 and PHP 5.4

1. Created a user.
2. Created a plan with a couple of tasks.
3. Put the plan in a page.
4. Exported Leap2A full and that page only.
5. Imported the Leap2A file each and clicked "Add new" for the plan.
6. Checked the plan under Content -> Plans: No tasks are included.

Title:
  Use of CAST() causes extreme slowdown in large MySQL sites

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Mahara version  1.5.2
  Linux CentOS release 5.8
  PHP Version 5.3.15
  MySQL 5.0.77

  When editing a page and trying to add a normal text box by dragging it
  into the page, this loads for approx 2 minutes or more and then
  eventually appears.

  It happens with a journal too but all others are fine and are instant
  as they should be.

  I'm not getting any apache log errors for this nor general server
  errors. The only thing I am able to see is the query that it hangs on
  for this length of time it is the below...

  I hope someone can help as obviously this is causing quite a lot of
  issues for the users!! Anyone able to diagnose what is the issue here?

  The thing is, there is another exact version of the Mahara site
  alongside this one but just a blank version which runs perfectly fine
  so this must be an issue within the database somewhere or the
  maharadata.

  Query below: this hangs for about 1 minute 45..

  SELECT a.*, CAST(a.owner IS NOT NULL AND a.owner = '1739' AS UNSIGNED) AS
editable FROM "artefact" a
  LEFT OUTER JOIN "artefact_parent_cache" apc ON (a.id =
apc.artefact AND a.institution = 'mahara' AND apc.parent = 371) WHERE (
  a.owner = '1739'
  OR a.id IN (
  SELECT aar.artefact
  FROM "group_member" m
  JOIN "artefact" aa ON m.group = aa.group
  JOIN "artefact_access_role" aar ON aar.role = m.role
AND aar.artefact = aa.id
  WHERE m.member = '1739' AND aar.can_republish = 1
  )
  OR a.id IN (SELECT artefact FROM "artefact_access_usr" WHERE
usr = '1739' AND can_republish = 1)
  OR a.institution IN ('test','mahara')
  ) AND artefacttype IN('blog')ORDER BY title ASC LIMIT 10 |

  Then this one for the rest of the time until eventually the text box
  or journal appears on the page:

  SELECT COUNT(*)  FROM "artefact" a
  LEFT OUTER JOIN "artefact_parent_cache" apc ON (a.id =
apc.artefact AND a.institution = 'mahara' AND apc.parent = 371) WHERE (
  a.owner = '1739'
  OR a.id IN (
  SELECT aar.artefact
  FROM "group_member" m
  JOIN "artefact" aa ON m.group = aa.group
  JOIN "artefact_access_role" aar ON aar.role = m.role
AND aar.artefact = aa.id
  WHERE m.member = '1739' AND aar.can_republish = 1
  )
  OR a.id IN (SELECT artefact FROM "artefact_access_usr" WHERE
usr = '1739' AND can_republish = 1)
  OR a.institution IN ('test','mahara')
  ) AND artefacttype IN('blogpost') |

  Thank you for your help

  In the page /admin/users/suspended.php, if an user belongs to several
  institutions and one of his student ids is empty, his ID numbers may
  not be matched to his institutions.

  For example, user Paula is in the institution School B with the empty
  ID number. She also in the institution School C with the ID=C01. In
  the page /admin/users/suspended.php, it seems that the ID 'C01' is
  with School B (see the attached image).

  Flash or flv files are not included in the Leap2A export in Mahara
  1.5, 1.6 and 1.8dev, but work in 1.4. I tested 1.7 and flv file is
  exported on the demo site alright.

  only one journal set

  When adding a new entry (/artefact/blog/post.php?blog=4), you can't
  add new files.

  When editing an existing post, when you click add file, a new page is
  drawn but it doesn't show the part of the page where you can select
  files (ie there shoudl be an html anchor or soemthing)

  When editing an existing post, when you click add file, then click
  select on a file, it is automatically added to the post before you
  click save.

  When editing an existing post, and you add a file, you can't click
  save to get out of that page. instead it tags an extra &browse=1 to
  the url (/artefact/blog/post.php?id=42&browse=1&browse=1). Clicking
  cancel works, but all non-file changes are lost

  Leap2A importer: improve robustness of importing

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  In import/leap/lib.php, function fix_artefact_reference.

  If a tag in a Leap2A import has more than one child node,
  the importer gets confused and only imports one of them (either the
  first or the last, not sure which).

  E.g.:

a paragraph

This is: Which isn't handled properly. I think the leap2A spec mentions that content like this is not a good idea, but the fix seems pretty easy. Patch attached. [Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1055868] Re: When editing a block using IOS devices, a warning is shown

Give how much the editing screens have changed in the past year, I'm
going to mark this one as "Incomplete" unless someone wants to verify
that it's still taking place.

Title:
  When editing a block using IOS devices, a warning is shown

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:

Bug description:
  [WAR] 72 (lib/pieforms/pieform.php:1408) Pieform element instconf_artefactids
wants to add headdata to the page, but it's too late. Build your form before
generating the page.
  Call stack (most recent first):
  log_message("Pieform element instconf_artefactids wants to add ...", 8, true,
true) at /var/www/mahara-dev/htdocs/lib/errors.php:109
  log_warn("Pieform element instconf_artefactids wants to add ...") at

/var/www/mahara-dev/htdocs/blocktype/lib.php:628
  BlockInstance->render_editing(true) at
/var/www/mahara-dev/htdocs/view/blocks.php:240

  This is because there is a function pieform_get_headdata in
  lib/pieform/pieform.php, which is called by lib/web.php and defines
  PIEFORM_GOT_HEADDATA

  I am not sure about problems with it, just reporting it.
