[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 675938] Re: Youtube embed fullscreen button doesn't function

I note that it works on a 15.04 installation for IE v11, though not for
FF or Chrome. Can this help with diagnosis?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 898678] Re: Layout: suggest new 2 column with *much* larger right column

2015-01-11 Thread Don Presant
Thanks, it would be great to have a two column layout that would be more
like 20:80 (and I guess 80:20, though I'm not sure how often I would use
that). My reason is to be able to have a navigation block and then lots
of space for content.

It would be great to have a new 2-column layout with a much larger
  right column.

I find I'm using the existing 3-column with a much larger centre
column for layouts that have a navigation block on the left.

It looks neater and more compact than the simple "larger right column"
but I could use the extra space of a "much larger column" for content
such as tables. I'm using these for self-assessment and find I'm
  always running out of room.

Is this a bite-sized improvement that might be achievable quickly?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1280471] [NEW] Profile Information block publishes fields in screwy order

2014-02-14 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

Here's an example of the order in which the Profile Information block publishes
fields onto a page:
Country
First name
Home phone
Industry
Last name
Occupation
Email address

Why this order? It makes no sense.
Why can't it be changed? Am I missing something? (I don't mean to sound cranky).

Ideally, the user would be able to specify the order of the fields,
perhaps similar to Pages in a Collection

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1037531] Re: Make comments / feedback directly on artefacts on the page

2012-09-06 Thread Don Presant
As with Bug #1034382 , navigational confusion can arise when users click
on a block title and end up look at a page version of the block.

If it is an busy employer looking at an employability eportfolio that
can be a bad thing.

Best if we can allow the user to switch this capability on/off or make
the default off at a global level, then turn each block/artefact on or
off, depending on need.

Added here at Krisina's suggestion. I think this is very important,
because it's already frustrating my learners. I hope it's easy to fix.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 1034382] Re: Hide embedded media filename

2012-08-23 Thread Don Presant
At Kristina's suggestion I would add that it would be great if we there
were a way to suppress the automatic linking of block titles that points
to a full page version of the block. It confuses my learners.

There is a use case that makes use of it, i.e. commenting on a block
with disurbing the flow of the overall pages, so best not to drop it
entirely - just provide a way of suppressing it at the admin level.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 896890] Re: Collection title overrides page title

2012-02-22 Thread Don Presant
I haven't seen a mockup, so am visualizing this in my mind...

Are we hanging onto the collection name for a specific user reason, or
because it's easier to code?

To me, it's redundant to have the collection name in addition to the
page name, if you are using a collection block.

Will anything change for tabbed collections? Having the same solution
means the page titles are redundant.

That said, the suggested improvement is better than what we have now.

My 2 cents.

This bug expired, but I hope it can be renewed...I`m trying to use a

Chrome is becoming a very popular browser (more downloads than FF these

solution...any new thoughts on this?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 919656] [NEW] Create a layout for mobile access

2012-01-21 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

QR codes are all the rage, and available on URL-shortening services like
bit.ly.

For my employability eportfolio, it would be great to be able to point a
QR code on someone's resume to a portfolio page laid out for mobile
access.

This could provide the other side of mobile access: viewing a portfolio
easily on a smartphone. In addition to providing convenient mobile
access to employers reading resumes, it could be used by a candidate as
supporting evidence in an interview. Teachers could probably think of
other purposes for it, likely in assessment.

Is this an easy thing to do? Could it be part of core? Has someone
already done it? I don't see it mentioned.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 800943] Re: Journal pager shows up too early

I think it's worse than that...the pager does not work properly for 11

I cannot access the 11th journal - the links to page 2 & end don't work.
I was forced to delete a journal on the first page to get access to a
journal that had been pushed to page 2.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 898678] [NEW] Layout: suggest new 2 column with *much* larger right column

2011-12-01 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

It would be great to have a new 2-column layout with a much larger right
column.

I find I'm using the existing 3-column with a much larger centre column
for layouts that have a navigation block on the left.

It looks neater and more compact than the simple "larger right column"
but I could use the extra space of a "much larger column" for content
such as tables. I'm using these for self-assessment and find I'm always
running out of room.

Is this a bite-sized improvement that might be achievable quickly?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 864690] [NEW] Publish a "Copy this page" button or link for copyable pages

2011-10-02 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

I really like the ability to copy a page as a starting point for making
a new one, but I find the process needlessly onerous, and difficult to
teach:

1. Make a note of the name of the page
2. Go to the Portfolio section and search for that page
3. Copy that page

It's a very awkward and geeky process that can distract the learner from
their creative purpose. Why couldn't we just have a "Copy this page"
button or link that appears if the page is copyable? Much more
intuitive.

Maybe on the bottom left, near "Report objectionable material | Print |
Add page to watchlist"?

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 750301] Re: Accessibility / Screen Reader Issues - various

2011-10-02 Thread Don Presant
I see this as a big problem waiting to happen, especially for large
educational Mahara implementations.

I recently lost a potential contract here in Canada, because the federal
government has stated that accessibility is a basic requirement. They
were recently successfully sued on an online accessibility issue.

It's only a matter of time before a blind or quadriplegic student
somewhere, excluded from participating in Mahara, successfully sues the
provider for violation of his/her human rights, with costly and
disruptive consequences.

What would it take to scope this properly so a price tag can be attached
to it and funding can be sought? My feeling is that money to redress the
issues should be easy to find, and all would benefit.

It should be as simple for the user as selecting language.

For reference, see:

The W3C specification:
http://www.w3.org/TR/wai-aria/

The new standard in Canada for government web sites:
http://www.tbs-sct.gc.ca/pol/doc-eng.aspx?section=text&id=23601

Title:
Accessibility / Screen Reader Issues - various

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  Triaged

Bug description:
A student who is entirely dependant on a screen reader (in this case
WindowEyes) has been through Mahara 1.3.3 and raised a number of
  accessibility issues as follows:

  1. TinyMCE editor
It is essential to be able to turn off the TinyMCE editor as screen reader
users cannot use this editor.
A plain text input field works fine (as per education and employment etc)
  Already a wishlist here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/mahara/+bug/548225
But needs to be user choice.

  2. Files upload
  Disclaimer Check box not obvious.
Once file 'Browsed' and uploaded, no notification to indicate upload process
having completed. Other aspects appear to be in the wrong order for the student.

A suggested process path would be:
Add a File > Browse > Select > Disclaimer > Upload > Upload Complete dialogue
> Storage Space remaining warning.

  3. Local Language.
More a note to self, but advice to others. If changing Language strings,
ensure you also change all instance's to cover ALT text. We use the word "CV"
instead of Resumé. Screen readers read Resumé phonetically as "RE-SOOM"
Lang files need to include ALT strings.

  4. Add and Delete Buttons: ALT text just says 'add' or 'delete' When there
are many 'adds' and 'deletes' on a page it is not obvious which resource you
are adding or deleting.
ALT should say something like (eg) "Add Educational History" or "Delete
Educational History BA Hons Business"

  5. Creating a View;
The student can create a view, but from that point on cannot make any use of
drag and drop - partly because the student does not use a mouse and partly
because there is no indication where anything has been dropped. Suggested use
of radio buttons - process would be pick an artefact > pick a location to put
it.

It is possible that some or all of the above can be wrapped up into a single
'screenreader' or accessibilty' editing mode with toggle link in the header
somewhere.
I also note that there are some workarounds that could potentially be adapted
from discussions around ie6 versions or ipad versions.

It is recognised as quite a challenge to offer a very visual tool to a
non-visual user, who would still like to present themselves to a
  visual audience.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 833867] [NEW] Add "Show Description" to Image Gallery

2011-08-25 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

I like the image gallery Mahara 1.4 a lot. It's a great way to provide
visual evidence, either as a sequence or as a thumbnail index.

But I notice that the "Show Description" option available on single
images is not available in the Gallery. To see descriptions of
individual images, you have to click on each image and open it in a new
window, which is not very usable.

I think curating images with brief descriptions is very valuable, and
showing curated images in sequence (ie slideshow) can build a compelling
story.

What are the difficulties/downsides of adding this capability to the
Image Gallery?

I can think of one potential difficulty: what to do with the other main
option: thumbnails. Descriptions would look very odd attached to these.
But I think a compromise could be found for this, such as clipping the
description after a set amount of characters.

I'm hoping it would be relatively straightforward to accomplish.
Feedback welcome

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 711836] Re: Image in title description of group view is broken for logged out users (IE 8)

2011-05-12 Thread Don Presant
Thanks Richard, making it a sitewide public file worked a charm. Good to know
why it was an issue.
I agree that it's not a high priority, though it does limit what normal users
can do in presenting views. Thankfully, I'm an admin and I can just do it.
Maybe a low to medium?

Does this mean that a sitewide image might work?
Group is now publicly viewable - no difference.

BTW, I just checked again.
In FF, I went without being logged in and saw the page without the header

In IE, no message about logging in, and a big broken graphic box

2011-03-21 Thread Don Presant
HTML export is basically useless without something like this..a way to
style the export for presentation. DAJAN's suggestion makes sense to me,
and we would use it.

Title:
New behaviour for using theme when views are exported to HTML

Status in Mahara ePortfolio:
  New

Bug description:
  This is a feature request.

I suggest that a special named stylesheet file (aka htmlexport.css)
(or a folder with different stylesheets files) may be created by
designers when they design a theme. Then, if existing, this stylesheet
will be used to display the exported views. Each theme may contain
this stylesheet to render the HTML export in reference to the theme.

Currently, the text box is only available in one view and it is not
re-usable. It would be good to use it in multiple views like other
artefacts and to be able to comment on it.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 736665] Re: text box as artefact

2011-03-17 Thread Don Presant
I think it would be better to keep the ad hoc "single use" Text box, but
add a new class of artefact if you want to re-use it or allow comments.
Something like My Blurbs or My Chunks.

My users would also use this for embedded media, much like an External
Video block.

And what would it take to be able to convert a single use Text Box into
a reusable Chunk, for those who only realize later that they want to
reuse it? This is only "nice to have", since a user could simply copy
the Text box into a Chunk.

[Mahara-contributors] [Bug 668293] [NEW] Secret URL needs metatags for noindex, captcha (& no anon feedback?)

2010-10-29 Thread Don Presant
Public bug reported:

See SPAM discussion topic at:
http://mahara.org/interaction/forum/topic.php?id=1055

Besides spam, allowing bots to index secret URLS means that views
intended to be extremely private (such as job applications by people
already employed somewhere else) will show up in Google searches (making
for interesting reading for their current managers!)
