[Mailman-Users] Export Users List to flatfile?

2004-06-23 Thread Shaun
This may be a newbie question and discussed many times before but I didn't
have much luck finding a answer.

I need to export a mailman list to a flatfile, is it possible to do this?

Also

If I ever needed to restore it how would I go about doing that?

[Mailman-Users] Mailman control on message rate ??

2004-06-23 Thread Yogesh Subhash Talekar
hi,

I am trying to configure Mailman with postfix server. All my users
currently reside on a mainframe while the main mail relays runs on postfix
(Linux). We are about to migrate Mainframe to some other system. So we
wish to move the mailing list on Mainframe to the postfix server first.

Since there are lists with large number of members, I want to control the
flow of messages (rather rate of messages) which will be flowing from
Mailman to Postfix. I run the list via a separate virtual domain. Now
suppose I have 5000 members on one list and I want 20 mails to be sent per
second when a post expands from mailman. Also,I want to keep other mails
flowing through postfix unaffected.

Is it possible to do it ? If yes, where is it possible to pput such a
control ?? Postfix or mailman?

Please advice

I can't see why that would be happening, but I no longer have an old
2.0.x installation I can play with. The code in the 2.0.13 version of
the process() function of Mailman/Handlers/CookHeaders.py will not add
the prefix if it finds the prefix anywhere in the line... so the prefix
wouldn't be added if the subject were 'Re: New Subject (was: Re: [test]
blah)' for example... but it should get added in your test case.

[Mailman-Users] Re: "Site list for mailman (usually named mailman) missing"

2004-06-23 Thread James Sinnamon
Dear mailmen and mailwomen,

I am a mailman site-administrator newby, although I have been the
owner of various mailman lists for a few years now.

I have got postfix working on a Debian sarge/testing Linux system.

I have configured mailman according to the comments in
postfix-to-mailman.py.

When I try to start mailman :

  greenhouse:/etc/init.d# ./mailman start

I get the message:

Site list for mailman (usually named mailman) missing
Please create it; until then, mailman will refuse to start

What's it referring to? (I checked out list_lists which indirectly
causes this message, but it is not clear to which file it is
referring. Pehaps I need to use a good Python IDE to help me
navigate through the code. Any suggestions?)

Also the log /var/log/mailman/error give the messages:

Jun 21 13:55:40 2004 mailmanctl(2089): PID unreadable in:
/var/run/mailman/mailman.pid
Jun 21 13:55:40 2004 mailmanctl(2089): [Errno 2] No such file or directory:
'/var/run/mailman/mailman.pid'
Jun 21 13:55:40 2004 mailmanctl(2089): Is qrunner even running?

... are these the effects of the first problem, or are they its cause?

TIA

Joe, I've pondered this also. I've considered trying to combine an
announcment list with discussion list (for those who are more interested
in the topic). In this case it would be nice to have the announcement
topic be the default or have new subs have the option to check a box for
announce vs all messages. Anyone figure out a way to to change the
Info page to do this? ** Also as list manager without mailman admin
access (command line) archiving and uploading topic preferences would be
nice. (Actually archive / uploading subs with complete option (digest/
nomail etc) would be very nice.

Does anyone know of examples of public lists that use topics at all
extensively (even non Mailman)? I've had difficulty getting experience
with them.

** I have put some mailman forms on private web pages that lead me to
think it might be possible. I have a page with the request form for a
list of subscribers (from bottom of Info pages) for multiple lists. My
page supplies the admin email addr and passwords. I also have a page with
multiple list forms to supply admin password and go directly to the list's
member maintenance (or rejects) pages which are used often. I'm only
moderately skilled with html so this was developed with trial and error.

Fred H Olson ( Direct copy of replies appreciated; I'm a no mail mode
   subscriber and read archives periodically)

PS I am very pleased with Mailman service at http://www.tigertech.net --
20 lists as part of $75/year package, Web based list creation forms,
Mhonarc list archives (instead of Pipermail) with search tool. Also
great, prompt email based support. (I have no financial interest in
Tigertech tho I've offered to invest and been declined :)

I am that person. Hi I'm Stefan :)
You suggested (in a PM to Anita, I think) that we add more logging into
.../Mailman/Handlers/Decorate.py like this:

syslog('error', 'can't add footer because xxx')
Well I did so in several places, even outside of conditions, just so I
could see that Decorate.py is called.

It is not.
A 'grep Decorate /home/mailman/Mailman/Handlers' only gave SMTPDirect.py
as files calling Decorate.py.

Since we were not able to use SMTPDirect.py because the server only
accepts authenticated smtp-connections, which do not seem to work with
SMTPDirect.py

So, against the warning in Sendmail.py, we are using that handler for
sending mail.
I have inserted the call to Decorate.py I saw in SMTPDirect.py where I
thought it would be appropriate, but with no success.

I have not much knowledge in python. I renamed the Sendmail.pyc so the
new source would be compiled.
While the list still works, there is no new compiled version in the
directory. Strange.

I would be very thankful for any clues,
Stefan

[Mailman-Users] Please review this procedure for sendmail integration

2004-06-23 Thread Ed Greenberg
Since many people cannot use David Champion's mm-handler due to shared use
of domains, I've worked this up. I'd appreciate some constructive comments,
yea or nay, on this procedure.

Using the postfix MTA functionality to do automatic sendmail alias handling
---
In order to add a list to mailman on a sendmail based system, you need to
add a bunch of aliases for that list to the alias file. In this
customization,
we implement a second alias file and teach sendmail about it.

We use a mailman feature that was designed for the postfix mail program - a
replacement for sendmail. This feature creates /home/mailman/data/aliases

1. We have a script that will copy the alias file and then process it. We
need to do this
since sendmail doesn't like alias files to be in directories that don't
meet very
specific permission requirements. /home/mailman/data doesn't meet this
requirement. Our script will copy the alias file from /home/mailman/data to
/etc. It uses a different name in order not to clash with the existing
/etc/aliases

Create /usr/local/sbin/mailman.aliases with these commands:
/bin/cp /home/mailman/data/aliases /etc/mailman.aliases
/usr/bin/newaliases
2. We have to tell mailman that it is using postfix. We lie.
Add these to mm_cfg.py:
MTA='Postfix'
POSTFIX_ALIAS_CMD = '/usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/sbin/mailman.aliases'
POSTFIX_STYLE_VIRTUAL_DOMAINS = []
3. We have to tell sendmail about the new alias file.
in /etc/mail/sendmail.mc find this line:
define(`ALIAS_FILE', `/etc/aliases')dnl
and change it to:
define(`ALIAS_FILE', `/etc/aliases,/etc/mailman.aliases')dnl
Run a make (or otherwise refresh sendmail.cf and then restart sendmail
Now when we run newaliases, it will rebuild both alias files.
4. We need permission for apache and mailman to run our script from step 1.
In the /etc/sudoers file (use the command /usr/sbin/visudo) we need two
lines:
apache ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/local/sbin/mailman.aliases
mailman ALL= NOPASSWD: /usr/local/sbin/mailman.aliases

Note that your web server may not run as 'apache' It may run as 'www' or
'nobody'.
Whatever it runs as is what you need where it says apache.

5. As mailman, run /home/mailman/bin/genaliases
Check for a file /home/mailman/data/aliases and
also TWO files /etc/mailman.aliases and /etc/mailman.aliases.db
6. Test creating a list using /home/mailman/bin/newlist
Check for the appearance of aliases for that list in /etc/mailman.aliases
Add some users and test the list
7. Test for creating a list using http://domain.com/mailman/create
Check for the appearance of aliases for that list in /etc/mailman.aliases
Add some users and test the list

Hmm. Did you stop and restart mailman after making changes?
I don't have root privilege on the server. The person who does made the
new list. Are you saying that after making a new list, the admin needs
to run the mailman script in the init directory with 'restart'?

Could the footer be stripped out for some reason? Maybe something that
 sendmail does to it?

Sendmail shouldn't be doing anything of this sort, but if you're
using a tool like MIMEDefang, an anti-virus scanner, an anti-spam
processing engine, or anything else other than plain-jane sendmail
during the processing of messages, that might.

I was wrong here - the server is using postfix, but I assume that would
be similar in function to endmail. I'll check, but don't think there is
anything else processing mail.

Thanks. I'll have to wait until tomorrow when I can confer with the
admin of the server.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Using topics vs. Additional Lists

I would say that the main advantage to topics is that the list admin
only has to maintain one list. Also, the subscribers can opt to receive
only information defined by topic, or others not defined by any topic.

If you want to check the topics for a particular subscriber, you can
enter their email address in the user page and see the topics. However,
you would only be able to do this for each subscriber.
