[Mailman-Users] How do I get my 2.0 members into a new 2.1 Mailman install

2005-04-05 Thread Daevid Vincent
I recently upgraded from a RedHat 8 box to Gentoo. In doing so I upgraded
Mailman. I have the old Mailman directories mounted and access to the files,
but I do NOT have a running 2.0 version. I have Mailman 2.1

I've followed two different "upgrade" posts to go from Mailman 2.0 to 2.1
but both ways have left my lists "empty".

Here's the most recent one which is essentially the same thing as the other
method I tried.

http://www.centos.org/modules/tinycontent/print.php?id=18

cd $MM20
mv -i lists/foo-list $MM21/lists
mv -i archives/private/foo-list $MM21/archives/private
mv -i archives/private/foo-list.mbox $MM21/archives/private
rm archives/public/foo-list
rm archives/public/foo-list.mbox
cd $MM21

daevid mailman # ./bin/withlist -l -r fix_url rbc
Importing fix_url...
Running fix_url.fix_url()...
Loading list rbc (locked)
Saving list
Finalizing

But when I type "./list_members rbc" nothing shows up. :(

How do I get my members into the NEW 2.1 lists??!

[Mailman-Users] I am Confused and Ignorant!

2005-04-05 Thread DCoyne
I've been using Mailman for about a year and a half now, and I'm still as
confused as ever.
The biggest issue I need help with, for starters, is that when people unsub
from the egroup, or if I unsub them, they show back up on the list at a later
date. How do I get rid of them for good??
I also have learned that people can be on the list but be invisible. How can
I, as the administrator, see the invisible people?
Please bear in mind that I don't even understand what most of the settings on
the list do.
Thanks for taking the time to help me out. Trust me, if this works out, there
will be plenty more questions from me!

You mean, by sending an e-mail message to your list? Send an
e-mail message to the list, and it goes to everyone subscribed to the
list.

If you want to send a message to all members within a given
domain and no one sle, you're going to have a lot more work to do,
and some custom programming.

I also have learned that people can be on the list but be invisible. How can

You can only see them from the web administration interface. But

Re: [Mailman-Users] how could i send a message to all users

2005-04-05 Thread Jason
I personally every once and a while send a who request to mailman and add
the emails to a unadvertised/moderated All-Users list.
It seems to work pretty good for me when I want to email all the people on
all my lists. And it also saves them getting multiple copies of the email if
they are on more then 1 list.

Subject: Re: [Mailman-Users] Shunted messages idea?
Your error trace below shows a problem in scrubbing an attachment which
is only done for digests and archives. Possibly the list was set up
this time with different content filtering or with no digests or
archives.
Hmm...when I recreated the list the last time, I actually did turn off
digesting. It doesn't require digesting, so I figured I'd turn it off, but
got distracted by several fires that needed attending to and forgot I'd done
that. Strange that none of the other lists are having a problem with
digesting. Archives are turned off for all lists because of mail delivery
degradation when it's turned on.

I don't know why you couldn't find the files. The first several are
Mailman modules and the rest are Python library modules. They were
clearly there when the error occurred, and unless Mailman and/or
Python moved in the interim, they must still be there.
It was most likely user error on my part in not finding the files. That and
I was swamped with a few other things and probably didn't search hard enough
when the pathway didn't come through.

Mailman is attempting to scrub an attachment from the digest. It is
attempting to get the file name from the Content-Disposition: header
using the email.Message.get_filename('') method from the Python
library. It appears that this header is malformed in some way
(possibly bad RFC 2231 encoding) that is causing the ultimate error in
the library routines.
Hmm, most of the messages came from a Mac user; I don't know if that one
specifically did or not. Wonder if that could be part of the problem?

There should be some kind of error trace analogous to this one for each
of the shunted messages although the error may not always be the same.
Thanks, I'll check when I get the chance. :)

[Mailman-Users] Mailman messages treated as Spam

2005-04-05 Thread Scott P. Miller
Many of my users are complaining that commercial mail services - yahoo,
hotmail, aol, clients with Postini - have their Mailman lists treated as
Spam.

Is there anything I can do to change that? I know the recepient can
setup filters and whitelist, but I often use this for company mail
annoucements where the end recepient is getting it because they use the
mailing list for work, but they aren't really swift enough to do much
more than read.

Thanks,

[Mailman-Users] Mailing List Only

2005-04-05 Thread Brian Dina
I am setting up a mailing list for one of my clients, using Mailman v2.1.5p1

I want to set it up so that ONLY the List Administrator(s) can post messages
to the mailing list (i.e. I want to use Mailman as a simple mailing list
only and NOT a discussion list).

Where do I go to set that option? --or-- do I do that in Membership

Thanks,

And just to add another data point to this thread, I have a yahoo.com
and a netscape.net address that are subscribed to one of my lists in
digest mode. The digests go through to both inboxes, but the monthly
password reminders are called spam by Yahoo.com (each month, I click
this is not spam, but it doesn't help). The reminders go Netscape.net
OK.

I am guessing from the

rm archives/public/foo-list
rm archives/public/foo-list.mbox

above that you created the foo-list on 2.1 first. This is the problem.
Creating foo-list creates $MM21/lists/foo-list/config.pck. Then the
"mv" moves the old 2.0 lists/foo-list/config.db file. Then Mailman
sees the new config.pck and never tries to import config.db.

The solution is to remove the config.pck and config.pck.last leaving
only the config.db and config.db.last. Then run fix_url and you should
be OK as long as the Marshal format in config.db is compatible with
the Python on the Gentoo box.

I don't know why you would need to link /bin/mailman to anything, but
in any case, /usr/lib/mailman/mail/mailman is the wrapper that handles
incoming mail. It has nothing to do with cron jobs.

The crontab that runs this expects it to be in
/usr/lib/mailman/cron/disabled and it either isn't there or doesn't
have execute permission or ??

Are the cron scripts in /usr/lib/mailman/cron/? if so, it must be a
permission issue. If not, move them there, put a link there to where
they are or change the crontab entries to point to where they are.

I'm not a Red Hat guy so this probably isn't the optimum advice, but it
should give you a clue.

Other lists aren't having a problem because it's probably caused by one
particular list member with a pathological MUA.

Yes, see above. Not necessarily because it's a Mac user, but the
specific MUA being used and also posts containing multiple MIME parts.

By previous Python, do you mean a prior 2.4 version or 2.3? Supposedly
this doesn't happen with 2.3.
