[Mailman-Users] Global whitelist for all mailinglists?
Hello everybody, I'm administrating a mailman installation with nearly 20 different mailinglists. And each mailinglist has it't own whitelist to accept mails from non members (accept_these_non_members). You can change your real name in your list options page (e.g. http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users for this list). Changing your name in mailman will change which name administrators see when they look at your subscription, and the name you see when you log in to edit your mailman options. However, this has no impact on what name will show up in the mails you send to the list or elsewhere. As Mark said, you'll need to change that in your mail client. For what it is worth, I use Evolution occasionally. To change how your name appears in your mail client (Evolution), go to Edit-Preferences. Select your account and click on the Edit button. Under the Identity Tab, change the Full Name information to what you would like to appear in your messages. Click on OK, then close the preferences dialog. That should do it. Unless you are using a totally different Evolution than I am (Evolution v2.12.3). Chris Mark Sapiro wrote: Loretta G. Kepler wrote: How do I change my name on my e-mails? My name went from Loretta G. [Mailman-Users] listserv question
Hello, I am wondering if you could help me with a problem I am having regarding a list serv that has recently been set up. It seems as though some members of the group are receiving a very messy post (ie., characters do not all turn out and spaces are missing). This, of course, is making it difficult for our members to read. Some members however are receiving the message as it was sent (no problems). When I compose the messages, I am careful to take all the formatting out (using word) and then paste the unformatted announcement in my email (novell email). Perhaps you could offer a few suggestions. Would it be better, for example, for me to use g-mail to send out the messages? Many thanks for all your help. Re: [Mailman-Users] Can't hide sender of message
TomSherlock writes: They receive two messages, one from the list and one from the poster. Here is the header from the poster: Cutting to the chase, from poster, the (relevant, edited) headers are: Received: from a2s47 by m1pismtp01-023 Received: from smtp1 by a2s47 From list: Received: from vms169129pub by p3pismtp01-026 Received: from a2s47 by vms169129 for t...@ramruva.com (ORCPT tj.sherlock) Received: from localhost by a2s47 Received: from smtp1 by a2s47 First, note the from localhost entry in the second series. This means that Mailman is reinjecting the message on the same host. It doesn't appear in the first series; Mailman did *not* handle that message, it was relayed *directly to you* by the MTA at a2s47. Second, apparently the list knows you as tj.sherlock at verizon, but it's likely the direct mail was originally addressed to tom at ramruva. I would guess that the sender is BCC'ing you (perhaps to help you identify any problems?) It's hard to say because I don't know Microsoft Exchange, but it is quite possible that the mail from the sender's host is going to multiple recipients (ie, other than the list) at the point where her MUA injects it. If there were a single message to the list only, the first MTA in the chain will often have a for mailing-list clause in the Received header. Its absence doesn't prove anything, but certainly leaves open the possibility of multiple recipients. A lower probability is that there's a rule or alias at a2s47's MTA that BCCs you on list mail, again for debugging purposes. (Coincidentally, yesterday I implemented exactly that feature using the same MTA (Exim 4) for a list I run, although the purpose was different. It's just one line in /etc/aliases.) As unlikely as that seems, based on the Received chain posted, I would say a problem with Mailman is even less likely. I just don't see how Mailman could be involved with the direct mail. I'm sorry we can't find a Mailman issue here, in the sense that we could help you with that. -- Mailman-Users mailing list Mailman-Users@python.org http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/mailman-users Mailman FAQ: http://wiki.list.org/x/AgA3 Security Policy: http://wiki.list.org/x/QIA9 Searchable Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/mailman-users%40python.org/ Unsubscribe: http://mail.python.org/mailman/options/mailman-users/archive%40jab.org

Re: [Mailman-Users] listserv question
Carolyn Vander Schee wrote: I am wondering if you could help me with a problem I am having regarding a list serv that has recently been set up. If you are really asking about a Listserv(r) list, you've come to the wrong place. rant I know that use of Listserv(r) as a generic term to refer to an email list or email list management software is ubiquitious, and I'm just pissing in the wind to fight it, but Listserv(r) is a registered trademark[1] owned by the developer of a particular email list management product, and it shouldn't be used generically. My personal interest in this is not to protect the Listserv(r) trademark, but rather to avoid confusing Listserv(r) email list management software with any other email list management software including GNU Mailman of which I am a developer. [1] http://www.lsoft.com/corporate/trademark.asp /rant It seems as though some members of the group are receiving a very messy post (ie., characters do not all turn out and spaces are missing). It is very difficult to know what might be happening without seeing a sample raw message including all headers and MIME parts. What I am guessing is happening is your novell email is composing a multipart/alternative message with text/plain and text/html alternative parts. Some clients will actually create an HTML message as you type, paste, etc. and then convert that HTML to plain text for the text/plain part and some are notoriously bad at converting the HTML to plain text. This could be happening in your case such that the text/html part is a fairly faithful representation of what you entered and the text/plain alternative is somewhat garbled. Then those users whose mail readers display the html part see what you entered and others whose mail readers display the plain text part see the garbled message. As I said though, this is only a guess, but I can say that if this is in fact a Mailman list, all regular (non-digest) members are receiving the same message. -- Mark Sapiro m...@msapiro.netThe highway is for gamblers, San Francisco Bay Area, Californiabetter use your sense - B.
