[Mailman-Users] help

2003-06-10 Thread DDM COMPUTERS - Danny Moss
Hi everyone,

I am having a lot of problem with my mailing list I once had it working
very well before getting hacked but a new install and change over to
postfix seams to have broken it..

I am using redhat 8 and postfix and mailman
I can sign up and send mail from my local lan but any body tring from
out side my lan gets nothing
I seam to have on list that sort of seams to work one person from
outside my lan gets mail from it
below is some extracts from my post,post.1, smtp, subscribe, etc.

I also have found a lot of the people that have tried to sign up in my
bounce file, I used to have redhat 8 mailman and sendmail running fine
before I got hacked what have I not done correctly in postfix to get it
running fine it seam fine from my local lan though..
please any help would be much appreciated ..

thank you for you help..

Danny,

Hard to say. Need to figure out where the error is occurring.

1. Do you get the messages sent from the Internet on the lists you
subscribe to? (This would indicate that Mailman gets the messages,
but can't correctly send email to the Internet, just to the LAN.)
Yes Last night I signed a user up here myself and then got him to post
a message and everybody on the lan system got it ..
before I go any further I have three mail list here at the moment

List email address
exericotas [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Rhsreunion[EMAIL PROTECTED]
amiga [EMAIL PROTECTED]
what I have found in log file though is
in /var/log/mailman
bounce file
Jun 01 19:56:02 2003 (18534)Exericotas: [EMAIL PROTECTED] - first
and so on for member that should be signed up but are not
then down further I have
Jun 02 22:53:51 2003 (29909) exericotas: address [EMAIL PROTECTED] not a
member.

then in the
bounce.1
has date time (number) exericotas: otherusers - first
it has mostt of the users that should be signed up
there or in the bounce
then in a file
fromusenet.1
may 30 06:15:06 2003 (20400) Could not acquire gate_news lock

2. If you don't get the messages, do they show up as being received
in the Postfix logs? (This would indicate that Mailman doesn't get
the message, but the computer does. I think this very unlikely, though.)

3. Can you send mail from the Internet to a personal account on the
same machine? (This would tell you whether anyone can send any email
to your machine. Postfix logs would be interesting for this, too. If
the only successful receipts are from the internal LAN, need to figure
out why.)
Yes I think this is working but will get a mate to comfirm it again today

4. Can you send mail to the Internet from a personal account on the
same machine as Mailman?
yes with no trouble at all

Typical suspects would include:

DNS (A. Can your machine resolve Internet addresses to be able to send
email? B. Are you listed in DNS so people
yes no problems

sending email to your machine will get through?)

Mail routing. Are you connected to an ISP that requires all email to
the Internet go through their mail server? Is your Mailman machine
correctly set up in Postfix to do this?

HI Georgeand the group,

Name here is Danny I am just starting to setup mailmain and have run
into heaps of problems I am running redhat 8 and sendmail , I got the
rpm package from the redhat site ..
I am glad you got it going I am not so luck so far but it is all new to
me if you have any tips please sent them to me ..

George Cohn wrote:

After struggling for about 6 weeks, I finally got Mailman working on my
server!
I'm using RH 8 on an AMD Athlon 2 gig box with 768 megs of memory.

The box has the latest version of Apache 2.0.40-11 with 2.2.2-7 Python,
2.0.7-2 Postfix and Mailman 2.1.1.
I originally tried installing the version of MM on the rpm distribution
that came with RH 8 but could never get it to work.
I finally started reading everything I could find and downloaded the
latest versions of Python, Postfix and Mailman.
The trick at long last was a mismatch between the mail host in Postfix
(mail.example.com) and the mm-config file (example.com) Once I
corrected the MM config, I was able to post and everything works now
including the archives.
It's been an interesting 6 weeks as I once took a unix course in the
early '90's and never used anything I learned until now.
Just thought I would let some of the newbies struggling along know that
it can be done. Just read every readme file and try to be logical about
it.
