[Mailman-Users] sending emergency message to _all_ subscribers

2005-11-05 Thread David Gordon
Can I override subscribers personal settings (no mail, digest) to
send a message? I want to be able to send a message to all subscribers,
even those who do not receive normal list messages - this is a one off
important administrative message.

I've looked and searched ...

If it's not possible maybe I need to set up a special list for
announcements only. That's easy enough but would it be possible to use
the subscription list from my main list as the subscription list for the
announcement list. ie one subscription list which is accessed by two
mailing lists?

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Headers _within_ digests

2005-09-01 Thread David Gordon
A typical Mailman list digest will start each post message with the following:

Message: 1
Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 17:49:01 -0500
From: List Subscriber [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [listname] A clever subject line
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; format=flowed

This is, to me, Too Much Information! Do we really need to know the
content type? And surely we know where the message was sent to?

I subscribe to a list which runs on LetterRip Pro and only includes the
Subject:, Date: and From: headers, thus making the digest much
easier to read. I can quickly see the information which matters when
digesting a digest!

Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 17:49:01 -0500
From: List Subscriber [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Re: [listname] A clever subject line

I'd like to clean up the digests my lists send. I wonder how to do remove
the Message-ID: and Content-Type: from the digest messages I send?

Many thanks.

[Mailman-Users] Ampersand in list footer

2005-03-04 Thread david gordon
Mailman 2.1.5
Looked in FAQs

In my list settings: Non-digest options - Footer added to mail sent to
regular list members, I have a footer which includes an ampersand ().
Messages received from the list show this as amp;.

Maybe this a function of a mail server somewhere, although I doubt that.
Any suggestions on how I can ensure is not amp;!

I didn't see this behaviour when using Mailman 2.0.13

[Mailman-Users] Reply-To list and poster in _some_ headers

2005-02-14 Thread david gordon
I have a 2.1.5 Mailman list set up so all replies go to the list. The
setting Where are replies to list messages directed? Poster is strongly
recommended for most mailing lists. is Explicit address and the
Explicit Reply-To: header. is the email address of the list, ie
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Everything seems fine and this worked okay in MM 2.0.13. Having just
upgraded to 2.1.5 I see a couple of messages reaching the list with a
Reply-To header of

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Any ideas why this should be?

[Mailman-Users] Changing my DEFAULT_HOST_NAME

2005-02-11 Thread david gordon
I have moved my server including Mailman installation from one host to
another. As a result the default server name changed. I have added the
new default server name to mm_cfg_py but still see that monthly password
reminders are sent from [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Defaults.py has
---
# Site-specific settings
DEFAULT_HOST_NAME   = 'my-domain.my-old-host.co.uk'
# DEFAULT_URL must end in a slash!
DEFAULT_URL = 'http://mydomain.my-old-host.co.uk/mailman/'
# PUBLIC_ARCHIVE_URL and PRIVATE_ARCHIVE_URL should not end in slashes!
PUBLIC_ARCHIVE_URL  = '/pipermail'
PRIVATE_ARCHIVE_URL = '/mailman/private'

HOME_PAGE = 'index.html'
MAILMAN_OWNER = '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' % DEFAULT_HOST_NAME
---
and I have added the following to mm_cfg_py
---
# Site-specific settings
DEFAULT_HOST_NAME   = 'my-domain.org'
# DEFAULT_URL must end in a slash!
DEFAULT_URL = 'http://my-domain.org/mailman/
---
There are two questions here really: How do I ensure that the default
email address is my-domain.co.uk and not my-domain.my-old-host.co.uk?
(Note that mail from the list does come from my-domain.co.uk but I
believe that's a change I made in the web admin panel.)

Why shouldn't I just make the changes in Defaults.py - yes I know the
documents say don't! But as I have in effect reinstalled my Mailman on
another server shouldn't I have Defaults.py as accurate as possible?

Final related question, does Defaults.py get the DEFAULT_SERVER_NAME from
my Apache httpd.conf during the install.

Thanks

[Mailman-Users] Working with multiple domains

2005-02-11 Thread david gordon
My host runs a Virtual Server environment (I believe using VSD) and I
have a number of different domains there. I have a couple of Mailman
lists running from a single installation but using different domains. ie
[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Both of those lists will eventually 'give away' the real name (the FQDN?)
of the server they are running on, http://my-server.my-host.co.uk. For
example the listinfo page at http://this-domain.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/
some-list has a link, To see a collection of prior postings... to http:
//my-server.my-host/mailman/private/some-list and that link is also given
in the welcome message.

I'm not quite clear how (if?) I can set up the site-specific settings in
mm_cfg_py so that each domain only ever refers to itself. I believe I can
see how to change the default domain name but can I do this for more than
one domain?

What I want is to keep a single Mailman installation and the name of the
host server secret.

Thanks for any help or pointers

[Mailman-Users] preventing non-member posting in MM 2.1.5

2005-02-06 Thread david gordon
I'm just updating a couple of lists from MM 2.0.13 to 2.1.5

It seems that the later version doesn't allow me to prevent non-member
posting - surely that can't be correct, I must have missed something,
somewhere?

I'm looking for the Restrict posting privilege to list members?
(member_posting_only) option which appears on the Privacy Options
Section of a MM 2.0.13 installation web admin page.

I see that this list runs 2.1.5 and prevents non-member posting by
holding for moderation - I know, I tried to post from a non-member
address! What are the setting used here to achieve that.

Naturally, I have searched the archive and read the FAQs before coming
here for advice!

Thanks for your help.

[Mailman-Users] Unistalling Mailman upgrade

2004-12-23 Thread david gordon
I'd like to upgrade from 2.0.13 to the latest Mailman (2.1.5?). I've
looked at the docs for doing this but wonder if I might be better
deleting my current install and starting afresh. This (I hope) would
solve a problem with my archive and the fact that admin messages come
from the wrong host address (we moved host I have tried fixing this...).

I can't see anything in the FAQs about this, what do I need to delete
(apart from the obvious!).

Which files do I need to save in order to keep my membership list and
password combinations? I'm assuming I can drop these files into my new
install and subscribers will carry on as usual.

Its taken that I will have to close the list while I do this but this
seems a good time of year to do so.

Thanks for any advice.

(OTOH if anyone want to offer to upgrade for me, what's your fee?)

[Mailman-Users] missing archives and weird size question

2004-12-22 Thread david gordon
Using Mailman 2.0.13 my list doesn't appear to have been archiving itself
(via Pipermail).

On the website archive page http://mydomain.tld/mailman/private/mylist/
messages stop in August 2003. The option to download the full raw archive
says it is 13MB.

When I use an FTP client (Fetch) to look at the files on the server I see
nothing in /usr/local/home/mailman/archives/private (Linux flavoured server).

But when I connect by command line over SSH I see files

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mylist.mbox]$ pwd
/usr/local/home/mailman/archives/private/mylist.mbox

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mylist.mbox]$ ls -lah
total 44M
drwxrwxr-x2 mailman mailman80 Dec 8 2002 .
drwxr-x--x6 mailman mailman 160 Dec 8 2002 ..
-rw-rw-r--1 mailman mailman 44M Dec 22 13:54 mylist.mbox

Clearly I don't do this enough to see the blindingly obvious mistake but...

How come the archive is being written to today but I can only see file
from August 2003 on the website?

Why does the website say the mailbox is 13MB but its really 44MB?

How do I get out of this mess?

Many thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Mailman digests ( this list)

2002-12-13 Thread David Gordon
I've just set my options for this list to receive the digest. The digest
which arrived is not formatted in the same way as the digest on the list
I administer. There are no headers or footers between the messages
breaking them up and making them easier to read.

This may be a difference between my 2.0.13 list and this running 2.1. Or
it could be to do with MIME which I set to receive because it was advised.

Whichever I'd like to know so I can advise my subscribers when we change
to 2.1. I'd also like to know why MIME is advised and if that advice can
be altered in 2.1

[Mailman-Users] non-wrapping mail in Pipermail archive

2002-12-09 Thread David Gordon
I've looked in the FAQs

I see some mails don't wrap when viewed in my Pipermail archive. I have
one which is from a Yahoo user. No doubt that's the problem! My messages
are run through StripMime to remove HTML and attachments. The Yahoo mail
reported...

--- StripMime Report -- processed MIME parts ---
multipart/alternative
  text/plain (text body -- kept)
  text/html
---

Obviously the remaining plain text wasn't set to wrap and so the archive
page has to be scrolled right to read the message. A real pain!

How can I deal with this? Is there another script somewhere I can use to
force messages like this one to wrap at a given character count?

Do other archives (MHonArc?) deal with this problem better?

[Mailman-Users] How do I use MHonArc with Mailman?

2002-12-09 Thread David Gordon
As usual, I read the FAQs

4.4. How can I use an external archiver with Mailman like MHonArc?

Configuring Mailman to use an external archiver instead of the internal
Pipermail is slightly finicky. A HOWTO for this was posted to the
mailman-developers list and should be copied in here once someone finds it.

Did anyone find it yet?!

I'd like to use MHonArc as it allows correct wrapping of messages and
some other nice features.

Anyone using it?

[Mailman-Users] Importing archives

2002-12-08 Thread David Gordon
I know I can import an archive to a new list, cos I read the FAQs...

5.1. How do I import an archive into a new mailing list?
If your archive is in mbox format copy it to

archives/private/list.mbox/list.mbox (where list is your list name)

then run

bin/arch list archives/private/list.mbox/list.mbox

If it's not in mbox format then you need to figure out how to convert it
from whatever form it's in to mbox

I am moving a list to Mailman. It would be nice to re-create the archive.
Do I have to create an mbox for each month, or do I just put all of the
messages in one mbox?

I have about 7500 messages going back a couple of years. But I think
there are more somewhere. Can I add those messages later? Or is importing
an archive a once only event.

I think I want the archive to be in monthly view, if that makes any
difference.

Thanks

[Mailman-Users] *some* subscribers don't get mail

2002-12-01 Thread David Gordon
Mailman 2.0.13 / Sendmail

I've set up a Mailman list which all seems to work fine.

I subscribed myself [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] as the first subscriber, sent and
received a test message. Sure everything was okay I subscribed more
people using the 'auto-subscribe' feature. Those people got mail and replied.

But [EMAIL PROTECTED] didn't get their replies, or any mail. I subscribed
another address at mydomain.tld, unsubscribed the me@ address and
resubscribed it. So I now have to subscriptions to mydomain.tld. So I
should get two copies of all posts - the 'membership options' confirm my
settings.

But I don't, I only get one copy. And I don't know to which account as my
host seems to have stripped out the 'to' or 'for' line from my headers.

My maillog shows mail being sent out to all subscribers, including both
my addresses at mydomain.tld

This seems odd to me and makes me worry that not all subscribers might be
receiving mail although as far as I can see they should be.

Is there a bug or did I do something wrong/stupid?

[Mailman-Users] more permission problems

2002-11-28 Thread David Gordon
[Sometimes I don't get a copy of my mail to this list so sorry if I
appear to be repeating...]

I've reinstalled Mailman 2.0.13 because I couldn't get it going
yesterday. I beleive I'm installing it on a machine with Apache/1.3.23
(Unix) (Red-Hat/Linux) mod_ssl/2.8.7 OpenSSL/0.9.6 PHP/4.1.2 FrontPage/
4.0.4.3 configured.

I have done the check_perms business. Mail doesn't get sent. One message
got through. I then auto subscribed some members. Then it all went wrong.
This is _exactly_ what happenned yesterday. Further point of information,
since doing the check_perms I can't get to the web pages. Here's what I
know, but don't understand

Traceback (innermost last):
  File /home/mailman/cron/gate_news, line 222, in ?
main()
File /home/mailman/cron/gate_news, line 198, in main
lock.lock(timeout=0.5)
File /home/mailman/Mailman/LockFile.py, line 219, in lock
self.__write()
File /home/mailman/Mailman/LockFile.py, line 350, in __write
fp = open(self.__tmpfname, 'w')
IOError: [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/mailman/locks/
gate_news.lock.epuk.thenexus.co.uk.18703'

I have done the check_perms business ;-)

I did have to manually chmod the $prefix/cgi-bin to get my web pages for
this list working. (Stopped working since check_perms)

I have sucessfully set up another list without problems, what's my
problem really. This is the same/similar as I was having yesterday. I
have reinstalled. Have I got a duff copy of Mailman. Should I download
another copy from another location and have another attempt?

[Mailman-Users] the public name of this list

2002-11-28 Thread David Gordon

In the web admin page, The public name of this list is not list but
my email address. Which is strange. Going to Details, however, shows
the correct title list.

Some thing wrong somewhere. My Mac OS X browser? [Chimera], my server or
Mailman?

[Mailman-Users] Installing using stripmime.pl (anti HTML)

2002-11-12 Thread David Gordon
I have now read the FAQs regarding stripping HTML from my list's messages.

http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showfile=faq04.013.htp

I think Alex Wetmore's looks the simplest from my point of view.

http://www.phred.org/~alex/stripmime.html

Is anyone using this on their list? Is it okay?

I tried following Alex's instructions but messages then stopped being
mailed out. I think my lack of Unix understanding is letting me down. (I
don't know for sure that Perl is running on my remote server for example.
It's installed, how do I check it's running?)

Thanks

[Mailman-Users] Sendmail: Cannot mail directly to programs

2002-11-11 Thread David Gordon
I've now got the Mailman web interface up and working for my first list.
However sending a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (to get help)
results in the following mail error

Recipient [EMAIL PROTECTED] refused
on smtp.mydomain1.tld
5.7.1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] ... Cannot
mail directly to programs

According to the Sendmail FAQs at http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section3.html

Q3.11 -- Why can't my users forward their mail to a program?

If you are willing to let users run programs from their .forward file
even though they cannot telnet or rsh in (as might be reasonable if you
run smrsh to control the list of programs they can run) then add the line:

/SENDMAIL/ANY/SHELL/

to /etc/shells.

Er, can I/should I do that then? Or is there another/better/safer/correct
way to do this?

Thanks again!

DG

[Mailman-Users] HTML Digests

2002-11-11 Thread David Gordon

Got my first list set up and running. Thanks to all here who helped!

Now...

Can I make HTML mail appear as plain text? Or can I auto bounce HTML
mails? HTML seems to make a big mess when it appears on archive. Anything
I can do about that?

I'd also like to be able to prevent any attachments from being posted.

Ta

[Mailman-Users] Another newlist aliases problem?

2002-11-10 Thread David Gordon
Set up test list list. Web interface working. Subscription requests
generates confirmation of subscription mail. Replying to that mail (to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]) sees that mail routed via my catch-all mail
account for that domain.

Yes, I have done the business with the aliases document. Here's what it
says...

mailman: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailman-owner: mailman
test-request: mailman
## test mailing list
## created: 09-Nov-2002 mailman
test:|/home/mailman/mail/wrapper post test
test-admin: |/home/mailman/mail/wrapper mailowner test
test-request:|/home/mailman/mail/wrapper mailcmd test
test-owner: test-admin

I also did a newaliases. I've tried a couple of times but I can't get
it going. Is it because I have a catch-all email set up? I'm running
Sendmail. Somewhere in Sendmail I have a line

@mydomain1.tld user1

Do I have to add the alias lines there as well?

Thanks!

DG
