[Mailman-Users] More than just email?

2008-05-08 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
I manage several lists with my 2.1.9 installation of MailMan. I would LIKE
to have MailMan continue in it's intended function, but also want to know if
anyone here integrates MM with other databases to keep track of more than
just Name [EMAIL PROTECTED] More clearly, I guess I am hoping to integrate
MM with other applications to work as a contact manager, to track calls,
letters, emails, for my growing contact list.

Suggestions?

[Mailman-Users] not recognized

2008-03-27 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
Dear List:

I have the strangest thing happen EVERYTIME I add anyone new, to any list. I
receive two messages. The first is a notice indicating the address was
successfully added to said list, a la:

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 15:26:28 -0600
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: sanchiro-patients subscription notification
From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Mar 27 15:26:30 2008

Firstname Lastname [EMAIL PROTECTED] has been successfully
subscribed to sanchiro-patients.

The second looks like the following:

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2008 15:26:36 -0600

Subject: Uncaught bounce notification
From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thu Mar 27 15:26:37 2008

[-- Attachment #1 --]
[-- Type: text/plain, Encoding: 7bit, Size: 0.3K --]

The attached message was received as a bounce, but either the bounce
format was not recognized, or no member addresses could be extracted
from it. This mailing list has been configured to send all
unrecognized bounce messages to the list administrator(s).

For more information see:

To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: Delivery status notification

[-- Attachment #1 --]
[-- Type: text/plain, Encoding: 8bit, Size: 0.2K --]

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed permanently:

 * [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'd like to know how to reconfigure my installation so that I do not keep
generating this error, with the -owner@ on every newly added address.

[Mailman-Users] new list, slammed and hosed...

2006-11-25 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
I recently reopened a list for my wife's business. I have a few of my own
lists. I NEVER get any unsolicited postings to my list, which has been up a
few weeks, yet after 2 days of starting my wife's list, I am getting
spammed, hosed and slammed by all sorts of dubious posts.

Is there something that should be set in Privacy or otherwise, in my list
versus the wife's new list, that it allowing all the crap in?

Finally, both lists are moderated. What if i opened up my wife's list, and
just let anyone post any old thing to it. Could opening it expose my server,
upon which it runs, to danger, hacking, and other attack?

Please advise.

Re: [Mailman-Users] reviving broken mailman ???

2006-11-01 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
Mark:

Patrick has pretty much covered it. If you want another view, see
 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/mailman-users/2006-October/054114.html.
This is in the context of moving lists, but the directories and files
 would be the same.

However, I *think* you should be able to reinstall Mailman without
moving your list data aside and get the same end result, but it would
be good to back up your data anyway.

Also, re: Patrick's concern that the issue may be caused by something
in the list data rather than Mailman itself is quite valid in general,
but is almost certainly not the case with your specific issue.

Ok, I'll bide my time, I guess waiting for debian to come out and address
this apparent bug, relating to mailman and smtp-failure and debuglevel
reporting. I could wait a year, right, or it could be out today?

In the meantime, I'll figure out how to back up my mailman installation per
Patrick's instructions. Is there any service that I could upload my list to,
and then have someone else send out to my list for me, for a price? Is that
option available?

[Mailman-Users] Still can't send out from Mailman

2006-10-26 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
AFAIK, my mailman failure to send out issue, resides solely at the pathway
from mailman - exim. All other email traffic, i.e., exim-mailman and all
other email traffic, seems to work just fine.

I have included the debug line in my SMTPDirect.py file, and yet nothing
shows up in /var/log/mailman/error, i.e., no debug messages.

[Mailman-Users] can't get mailman and exim4 talking on my debian 3.1

2006-10-19 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
For some reason, after a recent nightmare with a hosed partition table, my
system which had a working Mailman 2.1.5 version on it, now refuses to
connect to exim4 and get my mail out to my lists.

Here's a snippted from /var/log/mailman/smtp-failure. I have no idea what
these things mean but hoping someone here can help:

Oct 19 11:36:12 2006 (2493) Low level smtp error: (110, 'Connection timed
out'), msgid: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oct 19 11:36:12 2006 (2493) delivery to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed with code
-1: (110, 'Connection timed out')
Oct 19 11:39:21 2006 (2493) Low level smtp error: (110, 'Connection timed
out'), msgid: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oct 19 11:39:22 2006 (2493) delivery to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
failed with code -1: (110, 'Connection timed out')
Oct 19 11:40:54 2006 (2493) Low level smtp error: (4, 'Interrupted system
call'), msgid: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oct 19 11:40:55 2006 (2493) delivery to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed with code
-1: (4, 'Interrupted system call')
Oct 19 11:44:16 2006 (5556) Low level smtp error: (110, 'Connection timed
out'), msgid: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oct 19 11:44:16 2006 (5556) delivery to [EMAIL PROTECTED] failed with code
-1: (110, 'Connection timed out')
Oct 19 11:47:26 2006 (5556) Low level smtp error: (110, 'Connection timed
out'), msgid: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Oct 19 11:47:26 2006 (5556) delivery to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
failed with code -1: (110, 'Connection timed out')

When I revived my system, I couldn't get mailman to even respond until I
changed my exim4.conf.template file to exim4.conf.template.new, replacing it
with my older exim4.conf.template file. The .new file which apparently was
created during an apt-get update pass, contained NO INFORMATION ABOUT
MAILMAN, while the old exim4.conf.template file had all my Mailman
references.

I am reading the [EMAIL PROTECTED]@%^$%*ing manual, for those who would urge
the RTFM
invective upon me. As yet, I can find no answers to help resolve this. It
would be nice if there were some probe utility that would verify everything
that needs to be in place, for mailman to work on a debian system.

Thanks for any suggestions with this.

btw, if I send to one of my lists, I get no response at any included list
recipient addresses though the message shows up in the archives for the list
as if it had gone out. Correction, the archives of all my lists work, i.e.,
thy collect mail sent out to each list, though none of the mail sent reaches
any recipient.

[Mailman-Users] cleaning up dead addresses

2006-06-08 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones

[Mailman-Users] message not showing in Archives

I sent a message to one of my lists today, and after receipt of the mail, I

[Mailman-Users] bouncing unwanted guests, et al

2006-04-03 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
Here's my dilemma. I get tons of SPAM/PHISHING attacks at my email inbox. I
am tired of deleting so much crap every day.

I have SA and clamav installed, but perhaps I don't have them configured.
Would anyone here be willing to share their mix of tools and how they
implement them to fight this.

On a more Mailman-specific note, I have a list, [EMAIL PROTECTED] set up for
my wife's business, and I constantly get bounce notices, from all sorts of
strange people trying to post to her list. I likely receive 20 to 40 per
day, just to her list. How do I deflect those, or is just the fact that
Mailman is bouncing them and not letting through, evidence enough that it's
working?

[Mailman-Users] Posting with sending ID concealed

2006-03-06 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
I operate a mailing list to issues updates and information to my patients.
The list is fully moderated, disallowing anyone to post without review.

Occasionally, I get some patients who respond back to something I send, and
I want to post their response, but I'd like to have it post with the
identity of the original poster concealed.

Is this possible?

What controls icons and whether they display or not? It seems that when I am

Also, where is the icon for the URL, which is supposed to display when

Re: [Mailman-Users] Fw: can't get replies back from list mailing...

2005-10-11 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
Mark

Then I don't know why your post had no content other than a -- line,
 but it did have a X-Content-Filtered-By: Mailman/MimeDel 2.1.6
indicating that there was a non text/plain part removed.

Both the original message and the message to which I'm replying
indicate User-Agent: Mutt/1.5.9i and the latter message is a single
text/plain part, so I can't explain what happened with the original.

I am not too worried about the content issue for now. It's on the back
burner for now.

There is some issue with the configuration of the incoming MTA. If you
are saying you can post to the list by mailing to [EMAIL PROTECTED],
then presumably you have something (aliases) in the MTA that can pipe
this address to Mailman, but it seems that perhaps whatever it is only
works for mail originating from the localhost and not from outside.

If you create the test59 user, then presumably the mail is delivered to
that users mailbox, but that doesn't get it to Mailman.

My MTA, exim4, does seem to get the mail out, but can't get it back in to
the right place. Obviously, I run Mutt and it works fine, in both
directions, just not in feeding the email to the various MM lists on my
system.

Comments at the front of Mailman/Queue/IncomingRunner.py give a rough
idea of the flow of messages through Mailman. In addition to what's
there, are the facts that a message to be sent out from Mailman is
delivered via SMTP to the outgoing MTA and then by the MTA to the
recipients. A reply back to the list is received by the incoming MTA
and piped to the mail wrapper with the appropriate action and listname
arguments. It is this last bit that apparently isn't working in your
case, at least for mail originating outside localhost.

I checked the IncomingRunner.py to get a better idea. It's helpful, but
still leaves me in the dark as to why my messages with MM are getting
mistreated.

I notice that in some of my lists, I click on the Archives, and see messages
from several months back, while with others, for example, newer lists, there
is no archive, but instead this error message:

Not Found

The requested URL /pipermail/bonez/ was not found on this server.

PHP/4.3.10-16 mod_perl/1.999.21 Perl/v5.8.4 Server at fyrenice.com
Port 80

Does this suggestion I have troubles just with this 'bonez' list or with
pipermail installation as well? With an older list, that I have used more,
the archives open up and list several months. which leads to one final
question.

I read the archives at the mailman site at times, and notice the site is
magically able to list communications 20 years into the future, a la ...

[Mailman-Users] rules du jour

2005-03-24 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
Dear list:
When I set up Mailman 2.1.5 on my Debian 3.0 system, I also set up
spamassassin, which included setting up RulesDuJour to be used to update
Spamassassin, if I understand it correctly.

I frequently get the following error messages, and am not sure how to
resolve them:

/etc/spamassassin/rules_du_jour: line 126: [: perl: integer expression
expected
cp: cannot create regular file
`/etc/spamassassin/RulesDuJour/99_FVGT_Tripwire.cf.2': Permission
+denied
touch: cannot touch
`/etc/spamassassin/RulesDuJour/99_FVGT_Tripwire.cf.2': Permission denied
mv: cannot move `/etc/spamassassin/RulesDuJour/99_FVGT_Tripwire.cf.2' to
+`/etc/spamassassin/tripwire.cf': Permission denied
cat: /etc/spamassassin/tripwire.cf: No such file or directory
cp: cannot create regular file
`/etc/spamassassin/RulesDuJour/evilnumbers.cf.2': Permission
+denied

Thanks for any help,
Scott

[Mailman-Users] error codes, checking mailman logs

2005-02-09 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
I have extracted the following from various log files on my system, and
am hoping someone can help me decipher them:

Here's an error from /var/log/mailman/post: Feb 09 17:30:42 2005 (1735)
post to 2ls from [EMAIL PROTECTED], size=1602,
message-id=[EMAIL PROTECTED], 1 failures

other than what it says..does this provide any helpful clue?
about why messages aren't getting through my mailman?
here's one from /var/log/exim4/mainlog.1 2005-02-09 04:35:00
1Cyq0q-0007cI-Cw = scott [EMAIL PROTECTED] R=spamcheck_router
T=spamcheck 2005-02-09 04:35:00 1Cyq0q-0007cI-Cw Completed

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/etc/init.d# ./exim4 restart
Restarting MTA: 2005-02-09 17:49:44 Exim configuration error in line 50
of /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp:
av_scanner option set for the second time
Invalid new configfile /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp
not installing /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp to
/var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated

This is from restarting exim4..
I am miffed why my emails aren't being processed by Mailman.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Group mismatch error. Mailman expected the mail

2005-01-11 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
John:
Group mismatch error. Mailman expected the mail wrapper script.
I am unsure how to resolve THIS error=2E I am hoping there is some
configuration file that I can update, instead of having to reconfigure my
Mailman installation entirely=2E=20

The group information is compiled into the mailman wrapper. You have two
choices, you can either change the group the MTA operates under to match
mailman or rebuild mailman again passing the group in the configure step
as recommended in the error message, this is probably the best solution.
FWIW a complete rebuild of mailman only takes a short while on most
boxes so it shouldn't be to painful, then just install to the same
location, nothing else should be affected although it might be prudent
to stop mailman during the install.

Thanks for the suggestions. I hate asking but I will. I vaguely
understand the 'wrapper' concept, but you lost me in telling me to
change the group, I know what a group is in linux, that one may belong
to various groups, which permits or denys access and executive privilege
based on the group, but i am miffed how to change a group under which
some process or application operates. How do I change it's group, or
even determine what group it works under? If it's too painful, or
complex, and simply reconfiguring Mailman to work better with Exim is
preferable, point the way, how to rebuild mailman to include all the
right stuff.

Thanks for helping and not flaming me..

[Mailman-Users] how do I read this?

2005-01-07 Thread Dr. Scott S. Jones
At the prompt, I notice this:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/boot# vim /var/mail/scott
You have new mail in /var/mail/scott
I check that mail file and find the following error message:
Traceback (most recent call last):
 File /usr/lib/mailman/cron/gate_news, line 43, in ?
   from Mailman import mm_cfg
 File /var/lib/mailman/Mailman/mm_cfg.py, line 50, in ?
   DEFAULT_URL   = none
NameError: name 'none' is not defined
My Defaults.py shows that for my debian package, I should have
DEFAULT_URL = none set just that way? Do I need to add none somewhere
to define it?
