[Mailman-Users] Mailman Not Sending Admins Notification of Held Messages

2012-01-13 Thread J.R. Constance
I have a group of mailman mailing lists (2.1.14-1) running in a cPanel
environment (11.30.5 - build 3) where suddenly I am no longer seeing
notifications of held messages being sent to the admins. I am also not seeing
the daily notifications of held messages that normally were sent out in the
mornings.

This happens with messages sent to moderated lists by subscribers and
non-subscribers, and also with messages sent to non-moderated lists by
non-subscribers. There is just no notification to admins. On the other hand,
messages sent to non-moderated lists by subscribers are sent out to the entire
list without a problem. In addition, individuals who send to a moderated list
receive an email that their message has been held pending admin approval. So,
just the two pieces are not working.

I realize that since the cPanel build is unique you are not able to support it,
but am just looking for some help about where to begin looking.

Thanks,

J.R.

[Mailman-Users] Unexplained unsubscribes of yahoo.com email addresses

2010-03-01 Thread J.R. Constance
I run a few Mailman mailing lists (2.1.12cp3 - 42 lists with 500 subscribers
max on each list) for a professional association that I belong to. Over the
last three days I have had a series of unexplained unsubscribes from one of the
lists, and almost all of the unsubscribed email addresses are yahoo.com
addresses. None of the admins has done a mass removal, so is there any way for
me to determine why these email addresses were unsubscribed? Anything in the
log files?

This is the only list that I am seeing this on.

Thanks,

J.R.

2010-03-01 Thread J.R. Constance
Thanks to all. I appreciate the quick responses.

Subscribe log says: [reason: BYBOUNCE]

and Bounce log says: deleted after exhausting notices

I was surprised at these unsubscribes because it has been almost 4 weeks since
any messages have gone out to this list, and I had removed any queued mail from
the queue server several weeks ago.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Unexplained unsubscribes of yahoo.com emailaddresses

2010-03-01 Thread J.R. Constance
Thanks Mark.

As I looked back through the Bounce log I can see the history for what you
describe below; multiple bounce notifications, account disabled after ~2 weeks,
then account unsubscribed after another two weeks.

Is there another log that would show the response(s) from yahoo.com, either a
deferral or rejection?

The bouncing member's delivery is disabled by bounce processing and if
requested a notice of the disable with the triggering bounce attached
is sent to the list owner. From that point forward, the process is
totally controlled by cron/disabled. Posts or the lack thereof are
irrelevant. If the member's delivery is not re-enabled manually by the
member or a list admin, the member will be unsubscribed after
 bounce_you_are_disabled_warnings times
 bounce_you_are_disabled_warnings_interval days (default 21).

Thus, when a member is unsubscribed by bounce processing this normally
occurs weeks after the member's delivery was disabled.

[Mailman-Users] No Admin Notification

2009-05-01 Thread J.R. Constance
I am having a problem with one of my lists where the administrators
are not being notified of posts awaiting approval. This list is set
right now to Emergency moderation so all posts are being held, but
neither I nor the other administrator are receiving notifications of
held messages.

Any ideas on what the problem might be? I actually think it's a
problem with a corrupt config.pck but not sure how I might go about
even testing that.

Thanks,

Re: [Mailman-Users] No Admin Notification

2009-05-01 Thread J.R. Constance
I should mention that I have about thirty lists all running off this
same mailman installation/domain and none of the other lists are
having this problem, so it is something unique to this list.

I also need to mention that this is a cPanel Mailman installation, but
since all of the other lists are working I am assuming that it has
nothing to do with cPanel.

On my CentOS 4 machine I found a strange 'quirk' that stopped mail
to list owners. I had to hard-code the alias in /etc/aliases for
list-owner to point to the real owner e-mail, rather than let
mailman handle the redirection. Give that a try.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Bug in Mailman error on ListInfo Page

2009-02-27 Thread J.R. Constance

Thanks Mark, that fixed the problem.

The pending.pck file had a date of Sep 2007 with a file size of zero.

And yes, I did change that list address. Always feel kind of queasy
about giving out that much info for one of my lists to a public
mailing list.

By the way, visiting the listinfo pages was not the problem. Only
subscribing from them.

The error below is from an attempted subscribe (i.e. clicking the
subscribe button) from the listinfo page for the list whose name you
apparently replaced with 'listname' in a few places below.

The problem is the subscribe request can't be added to the pending
database because the
usr/local/cpanel/3rdparty/mailman/lists/listname_ascls-lists.org/
pending.pck

file is corrupt. You can just remove that file, although you will lose
the confirmation data for other requests, but it's probably lost
anyway.

Is this the problem you're having?

I note that I can go to the overview at
http://ascls-lists.org/mailman/listinfo/ and to the listinfo for the
two public lists on that page without problem.

OK, I have looked at the FAQ and other resources and as technically
proficient as I like to think I am I cannot for the life of me figure
out how to configure this in my environment.

Is there anyone out there who would be willing to assist me with
figuring out how to set this up?

Apache Linux.
Mailman 2.1.9.cp2 (cPanel 11.23.6)

If anyone has any experience with getting this set up in a cPanel

Thanks,

Procmail, ClamAV, etc. You should be running such filters on all
received mail. If you can't reconfigure the MTA to do this for some
reason, the admin can usually run procmail through his/her .forward
file.

[Mailman-Users] Emails sent directly to bounce address

2008-09-18 Thread J.R. Constance
I have one list that has suddenly been receiving an increase in
bounces, and in looking at the bounce emails they appear to be spam
sent directly to the bounce address (ex. list1-
[EMAIL PROTECTED]). From what I can see this email (with
attachments, sometimes virus/trojans) then gets sent as a bounce to
the admins. The admin for this list is receiving all of these emails,
with attachments, and is getting concerned about the volume of
infected attachments she's getting.

Is there any way to filter these emails sent to the bounce address so
that if they are spam they just get discarded. I do have filters set
up for emails sent to the list that filter them out, but since these
don't actually go to the list, but to the bounce address, they don't
appear to be run through that filter system.

Any recommendations on what to do about this, short of creating a new
list, would be appreciated.

[Mailman-Users] Unrecognized Bounce

2008-05-13 Thread J.R. Constance
I have one mailing list that for every message sent to the list I, as

From: Mail Delivery Subsystem [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Returned mail: see transcript for details

Clicking on the For more information link just takes me to the
Bounce config page in the list admin section. I'm not getting any kind
of transcript.

Looking at the bounce log for this particular email shows the following:

May 13 09:29:26 2008 (21967) bounce message w/no discernable
addresses: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
May 13 09:29:26 2008 (21967) forwarding unrecognized, message-id: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My guess here is that for some reason tempest.pvhs.org is sending some
kind of response to the list that is getting bounced for whatever
reason. I do have several subscribers at that facility, but have not
heard that any of them are not receiving the emails from the list.

Any ideas on how to I might proceed to figure out why I'm getting this
bounce, and therefore maybe figure out how to prevent it?

Thanks,

J.R.

Re: [Mailman-Users] 2008 Pizzigati Prize

2008-03-06 Thread J.R. Constance
Congratulations Barry. Well deserved. Mailman is a great product and
has served my needs very well.

I'm running Mailman 2.1.9cp2 on a virtual server and have serving 34
mailing lists for a professional organization. Most are small,
announce lists with little traffic but they all run well, with few
problems.

My thanks to you and the rest of the team for providing such a great
product.

I realize that I've been remiss in announcing this. My apologies.

I have been awarded the 2008 Pizzigati Prize for Public Interest
 Computing for GNU Mailman.

 http://www.pizzigatiprize.org/

I am deeply honored to win this prize because I believe very strongly
in Mailman's role in helping people communicate and organize. I want
to thank all of you who have supported me and Mailman over the years,
and I want to let you know that I am as excited as ever about where
Mailman is going. One of the most satisfying aspects of this project
for me has been meeting you, the users, developers and contributors to
 Mailman, both online and face-to-face.

I'm looking forward to meeting the Pizzigati family and having some
time to spend with them learning about Anthony's remarkable life,
 sadly cut too short.

So again, thank you all and I'm looking forward to the next 10 years
 of GNU Mailman!

 Cheers,

[Mailman-Users] Help with SpamAssassin

2007-10-01 Thread J.R. Constance
I have been attempting, unsuccessfully, to configure SpamAssassin to
work with my Mailman installation using the Add
Global_Pipeline.inster(1,'SpamAssassin') method (from FAQ 4.23). I
am hoping that someone who has been successful at implementing this
will be able to help me out.

I have been working through the instrucitons available at http://
www.jamesh.id.au/articles/mailman-spamassassin/ and have been able to
create the user acount and directory, but when I attempt to pass the
arguments to spamd to get it to run in a locked down mode using the
instructions (spamd -d -u spamassassin -x -a -P --virtual-config-dir=/
var/lib/spamassassin/%u.prefs) I get the following:

warn: Unknown option: a
Usage:
 spamd [options]

with a list of options that do not include an option a for crating
automatic whitelists. Not sure that's a big deal so I removed the -a
option and repeated the command, and that seemed to work OK.

i moved on to the next step (not using RPM's) which was:

chkconfig --level 345 spamassassin on

and I get the following:

error reading information on service spamassassin: No such file or
directory

Anybody have any ideas why this isn't working, or recommendations for
what else I can check?

Thanks,

J.R.

[Mailman-Users] Umbrella-bounces address?

2007-09-15 Thread J.R. Constance
I've been working on setting up and umbrella list that sends to four
sub-lists. I have this working well if someone submits an email to
the umbrella list and they are subscribed to the sub-lists. However,
I have a question about the proper configuration handling a post from
someone who is not a member of a sublist .

In Mailman FAQ 3.69 there is a section that states:

The second issue is when a member of one sub-list posts to the
umbrella, her post is held by the sublists of which she is not a
member. There are two ways to deal with this. if the mm_cfg.py option
USE_ENVELOPE_SENDER is Yes or True, you can add the umbrella's -
bounces address to accept_these_nonmembers of sublists. In any case,
you can add the umbrella's -bounces address as a member with delivery
disabled and password reminders off to the sublists.

I know that this is a stupid question, but what is the umbrella-
bounces address for any given list? If my list is [EMAIL PROTECTED],
what would the -bounces address be?

Thanks,

J.R.

[Mailman-Users] We're sorry, we hit a bug!

2007-09-07 Thread J.R. Constance
I'm hoping someone can help me figure out a problem that I've been
having for some time now. For some of my lists when I try to log in
and approve/discard posts using the admin function I get the
following error.

This is obviously a cpanel version of mailman. I am also trying to

generate a useful traceback for you. Please report this to the

Re: [Mailman-Users] Temporary local problem - please try later

2006-11-12 Thread J.R. Constance
I am using Exim, and here is the corresponding error from the
exim_rejecting log for this smtp-failure entry.

2006-11-12 18:33:44 H=localhost (frodo.clshost.com) [127.0.0.1]

F=[EMAIL PROTECTED] temporarily rejected RCPT
[EMAIL PROTECTED]: Could not complete sender verify

I have had a situation with this domain where some spammers seem to
be using the domain as a return address and getting a lot of
rejections for emails that we weren't sending, so I set the default
address folr ascls-lists.org to :blackhole so that I wasn't getting
all of the rejections. Could that be causing a problem?

The [EMAIL PROTECTED] address is my main email address, and seems to
work fine. I do receive email from the ascls-lists.org mailing lists
on a regular basis to that address.

I will look through the FAQ entries, and will also recheck the DNS
configuration.

Thanks,

J.R.

Congratulations, this is a first -- I don't recall having ever seen

This is almost certainly a problem in your local MTA, where Mailman
is unable to hand off messages to the mail server for some reason.

What MTA are you using -- is it Exim? How is that configured?
Have you checked the MTA logs, to see what it says about this
issue? Have you checked to make sure that your DNS is configured
 correctly?

Have you checked the relevant FAQ entries regarding MTA problems
 and non-delivery issues?

Have you checked your MTA configuration to make sure that it is
turning off all anti-spam/anti-virus checks for all outbound
messages, as suggested in the FAQ? If you can't do that, can you
at least confirm that your anti-virus scanning system is working
 properly?

[Mailman-Users] Some of my Mailman mailing lists don't work but some do.

2006-11-08 Thread J.R. Constance
I recently transfered hosting from one service to another. I have
hosted accounts that use mailman mailing lists. On one account
(domain) all of the mailing lists seem to be functional. On the other
at least one of the lists is not working. I can log in to the admin
section and from that side everything looks normal. I can send
invitations or subscribe members, and it tells me Invitation sent
successfully or Subscription successful but no invitation or
welcome emails are received.

I have successfully created a new list on this account and it works
fine.

Any ideas what might be the problem, and what I can do to fix, short
of recreating the mailing list(s) that are not working?

Thanks,

J.R. Constance

Re: [Mailman-Users] Moderated group.

2005-03-30 Thread J.R. Constance
I checked this and the member_moderation_action is set to Hold. All
new subscribers are automatically set to be moderated. When I send a
test message to the list absolutely nothing happens. Nothing shows up
in the moderator's queue to be approved, no notifications go out that
a post is awaiting approval. Nothing.

The really odd thing is that when I first set this list up it was
working fine. Subscribers would post to the list, a notification
would be sent to the admin that there was a post to be approved, etc.
At some point a month or so ago, it just quit working. I have checked
and rechecked the settings, but can't find anything.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Moderated group.

2005-03-30 Thread J.R. Constance
Mark,

Hmmm. I'm using an installation of Mailman on hosted space at Jumpdomain.com.
I did check the admin interface and there are no pending requests for
moderators, and nothing in the archives.

To be honest, I'm not sure I have access to those other files to review. My
access through jumpdomain is restricted to files I can see via their control
panel. FTP access gets me into the public_html directory, and I don't have
telnet access.

You may have already done some or all of this, but I would:

Check the admindb page to make sure there are no messages there and
it's not just that the moderator notices that are lost.

Check the MTA aliases and MTA logs to be sure the messages are actually
delivered to mailman.

Check all the Mailman logs
