[Mailman-Users] Settings for announcement only list questions.

2003-01-09 Thread Jonathan Chum
A client of ours with 72K subscribers recently became the victim when one of
the subscribers decides to email the list owner address which sent out 72K
emails to everyone on the list. I know this is a feature of Mailman, but
never once in the past 6 months of using Mailman has this ever happened
before.

I did not setup the lists for this particular client, but I'm reviewing the
administration area and do not see any settings turned on so that the
individual could have blasted out the email by emailing the list owner. I
don't think it's security hole as this guy only sent out his email in the
body and his email provider attached signatures related to dating services.
He could have been a lot more malicious than that. I may have looked over
some setting. Any have a list of settings to check to make sure only one
email address has the authority to blast out?

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Timesout When UnSubscribing, Why?

2002-12-16 Thread Jonathan Chum
I'm trying to unsubscribe a user from a list of 70,000 and so I'm going to
the listinfo URL of this list, and attempting to unsubscribe an email. The
page loads just fine, however, when I hit the Edit Options button, it's
taking forever to load. It's sooo long that the browser simply expires.

If I'm performing this task for another list which is 39,000 in size, it
does it just fine.

The load on theserver is:

last pid: 88090; load averages: 0.10, 0.04, 0.01

2002-12-16 Thread Jonathan Chum
Hi,

I attempted to use the command line and after 8 minutes, still just trying
to unsubscribe. I tried it both passing the one email in a file and via the
STDIN.

I then checks the lock directory and there was about 25 different locks on
that one list. So I removed all the locks and killed off any mailman related
process either command line or from the browser.

I tried it again and was successful.

Still, I will consider the option of upgrading the server or creating a RAM
disk...

You'll find several good suggestions on dealing with this in the
archives. Try using the command line tools to make the change you
want. If that is too inconvenient, then you'll want to look at setting
up a Ram Disk.

Use the Ram Disk like an ordinary partition, load the lists config
directories into the Ram Disk, then mount the Ram Disk in place of the
lists config directories. Several admins have done this for especially
large mailing lists. It works a treat.

Of course, another alternative is upgrade your disk-subsystem and
processor so that disk requests happen faster and complete before the
time-out.

Good Luck - Jon Carnes

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Sending Out Duplicates!

2002-12-10 Thread Jonathan Chum
I'm not sure what exactly is the problem, however Mailman is sending
duplicates up to 12x for a client of ours. I reviewed the dmesg.today log
file and notice it ran out SWAP space. The machine is a PIII 850 with 128 MB
RAM and 512 of SWAP space.

There are two lists that are blasted out. . . one list that's 72,500
subscribers and another list of 37,300 subscribers.

The problem usually occurs when the 72,500 subscribers are blasted out. We
did not have this problem when the client started with 50K subscribers and
the previous administrator tweaked Sendmail and Mailman.

I would think Mailman working as a robust list server should have mechanisms
to prevent duplicate emails. Reviewing the ps -auxww when the SWAP space ran
out, it looked like a few Mailman processes was sucking up all the memory.

Any ideas to fix tihs issue? Is memory the problem? I was thinking of
slapping in more memory into the machine.

[Mailman-Users] Any other mailing list software?

2002-11-19 Thread Jonathan Chum
Hi,

One of our clients which we put them on Mailman finds the administration of
the list very unfriendly and complex. They are now questioning whether there
are any other applications comparable to Mailman's performance, but more
user friendly. Even if it costs them $$$. The only problem though is that
they do not want to be hosted by a company such as Topica, but on their own
dedicated machine to blast these emails through.

Is there any other software someone can recommend?

[Mailman-Users] Front End for Mailman

2002-11-19 Thread Jonathan Chum
I was wondering if there are any nice front ends for Mailman that would
allow complete list administration via the browser. That would be sending
out HTML/TEXT emails, attachments, etc. all via the web interface. They
would be able to view statistics of their list, number of subscribers,
number of unsubscribers, etc.

I haven't see anything like that but I may have overlooked something, but
there is, I'd like to know about it.

Also, off the topic of this email, but can Mailman run off of a mySQL
database?

RE: [Mailman-Users] Mailman sending out email duplicates

2002-10-10 Thread Jonathan Chum

I noticed that Apache died during the night over during this period and
rummaging through some log files, I've picked up this:

pid 32821 (sendmail), uid 0, was killed: out of swap space
Oct 9 00:05:23 custsvr1 /kernel: pid 32821 (sendmail), uid 0, was killed:

This log was in the dmesg.today in the /var/log directory.

Exactly what does swap_pager_getswapspace: failed mean? I'm assuming that
there was enough swap space, so Mailman died and reattempted to try again,
yet loosing it's place as to what users did receive the newsletter, and
resent the letter again.

Mailman was setup as a 1 way delivery system, that is, only 1 admin sends
the newsletter, and everyone on the list receives a copy of it.

Currently this is what top looks like this morning at 8:00 AM EST:

last pid: 61450; load averages: 0.55, 0.18, 0.08
up 49+15:23:38 08:12:57

Any ideas?

John,
Switch your MTA on to a debug setting and watch the conversation go
through, that should score some type of information.

I hate quoting myself, but I'm a bit frustrated with Mailman at the
moment.
I've checked the logs/smtp just to make sure I was giving qrunner enough
time. Did some research on the archives of python and was not able to
 determine what other possible causes.

The message ID was the exact ID in all 3 messages I received in my test
account. The time stamp was also the same on when the message was sent.

I'm not sure if the MTA duplicated or Mailman duplicated the message. Any
 ideas?

Any ideas or suggestions on what could be happening? I'm using it with

[Mailman-Users] Sending HTML to the email list

2002-10-07 Thread Jonathan Chum

Hi,

I've sent a HTML document successfully to the list and I'm curious what will
happen to those who cannot read HTML documents properly? Is there an option
in Mailman for subscribers to subscribe to a text only version, or will that
require setting up a new list? Or will Mailman handle this for me?

[Mailman-Users] Sending email to the list

2002-10-04 Thread Jonathan Chum

I've just got started with Mailman, and reviewing the list and admnistrator
documentation. I could not find anywhere how'd I send a HTML or plain text
to the list. I logged in as the list administrator and it provide options to
configure the list, unless I missed an option to send an email. Where would
I find where I need to fill and email this newsletter out to the subscribers
on the list? And, is there an options I have to do in order to send HTML
newsletters?

RE: [Mailman-Users] Sending out email blast in HTML format

2002-10-01 Thread Jonathan Chum

Hmm,

Why is there an option in the web interface that allows to get MIME or Plain
Text Digests:

Get MIME or Plain Text Digests?
If you have any problems with MIME digests, select plain text.
x MIME x Plain Text

What kind of effect does that have on the newsletter?

Does Mailman automatically check the content of the email to see whether it
needs to send as HTML or TEXT format?

 Hi,

whether to send as HTML or as TXT format. Any ideas how'd I do this?

[Mailman-Users] Counting the number of new subscribers from a certain age

2002-08-15 Thread Jonathan Chum

Hi,

I didn't see any tools that would do this but after poking around with a few
utlities, I came up with this tool, list_members in the bin directory.

I played with it and it dumps the users, but each time it ran, it didn't
dump the users in any certain order, randomly. . . If he dumped it out from
the oldest subscriber to the newest subscriber, maybe then can I code a
script that searches for an individual then count how many new users were
added since that individual.

That's the goal I was trying to achive is counting the number of new
subscribers.

Any ideas of how I could acheive this?
