[Mailman-Users] URGENT Help required -suddenly some of the Umbrella lists is going unmoderated

2008-06-09 Thread Vinita Aggarwal
Dear All,

Please help

Thursday I created two cross posts (umbrealla lists) se-mf_se-drm and
se-wes_se-drm. When around 5:00 Resource team started posting the messages
in these lists, they found that messages are going without moderation. They
reported me. I checked the mailman seetings and found that "By default,
should new list member postings be moderated?" setting was set to No which I
corrected to yes. So, till Friday evening everything was ok. Then suddenly,
on Friday evening, again only se-mf_se-drm resource team reported that it
their message again went moderated. I again checked the settings. But this
time, settings were correct. To handle the emergency, we had to delete that
list.

Now, today, again one cross post se-mch_aids-se message went unmoderated. We
had to remove all members from this list.

I request you to please give attention to this concern as there are many
cross posts lists are running and if same problem gets replicated there then
it will be a huge pronlem.

Please suggest how to handle this situation and sort out this.

Regards,

Vinita Aggarwal

You haven't mis-configured the list; this is an Outlook problem. See:

[Mailman-Users] Office in New Delhi needs urgent help to re-stabilize our mailing list

2008-01-21 Thread Vinita Aggarwal
Hi,

We have been a major Mailman mail list user (12,000 members; 100
messages/day) using a version (2.1.5) installed by a consultant two years
ago. We were lucky until about a month ago when the server went down, and
major problems have been cropping up ever since. Many members have stopped
receiving mails, and the server has continued to crash intermittently.

We are getting very concerned about our continued operation. Is anyone on
this list located in New Delhi India with all-purpose expertise on Mailman
who is immediately available to examine our code and do what is needed to
get our system stable again?

If so, please e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your contacts,
credentials and rates.

Thanks,

Vinita Aggarwal

Hi

I have a list where non members can post but their messages are moderated, I
ave to deal with a lot of spam. After sometime, just a small percentage of
them will be good posts.

Is there an easy way to discard all messages waiting to be reviewed?

I don't have any option in my admin to select more than one message?

That depends on your OS. I suggest you identify what OS and version
you're using, and then make use of their support mechanisms to answer
any OS-specific questions you may have.

That's possible, so you should first ask the other people on your
team if anyone has messed with your cron jobs.

write cron script that does something similar to this (typed free
hand, mileage may vary), or perhaps runs opportunistically, so that
your creating the actual list membership nearly on the fly

LIST=/tmp/list3.lst

I have Three lists [EMAIL PROTECTED] (1000 members) and [EMAIL PROTECTED]
(1500 members) and [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Now, In [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have only
two members i.e. [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If I send any message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] it goes to all the members of
list1 and list2 but the members who are in both list1 and list2 gets
duplicate copies. How to prevent that? I don't want to send duplicate
messages.

Please advise.

This is definitely a gmail 'feature' to the extent that you won't see
your own list posts because they are 'duplicates' of the sent message.

Since you quote a web interface error message, I assume you are trying
to create a list via the web create page.

Are you providing the correct Mailman site password or Mailman list
creator password as set by bin/mmsitepass for the "List creator's
(authentication) password:" at the bottom of the form?

Note that as root or the Mailman user, you can also create a list using
bin/newlist.

Give these commands (newlist, mmsitepass) with the --help option for
more info.

I thought you earlier wrote that SpamAssassin *is* being run by the
ISP, but "can't be used" with Mailman. If SpamAssassin is installed,
I don't understand why you can't use it with Mailman.

Lack of spam filtering is not just another feature that might not be
provided in today's mail environment; it's a complete loss of service
waiting to happen. IMHO YMMV etc, but I strongly advise you be
proactive on this.

Re: [Mailman-Users] How to stop spam emails

2007-12-07 Thread Vinita Aggarwal
Hi

I am not very sound in mailman configuration.

I have a list in which anyone can post. "Hold the positing from non
members".

Now, I am getting everyday about 100s of spam emails in that list. Please
advise how to deal with this?

which is our case, because of the call to 'arch'

I didn't understand well this solution. can you please explain it, how
can a subscriber/address do the external archiving ?

Thank you in advance

No... this option is not available.

Please suggest some other alternative.

If you're using a recent version of Mailman, at the top and bottom of
the web page that shows the moderation queue for each list is a check
box that says "Discard all messages marked Defer". You'll have to
take explicit action on those messages you want to allow through the
system, but leave the rest set to "Defer", which should be the
default.

Then select this one check box, and hit the button which says "Submit
All Data".

Re: [Mailman-Users] Is there any way, where I can select more than one message to approve/discard?

2007-12-04 Thread Vinita Aggarwal
Hi

I am new to mailman ...

I have a mailman list. Everyday, I am getting 20-30 messages (few are useful
and few are junks). I have to first approve the message to get circulated.

Is there any way, where I can select more than one message to
approve/discard?

Please suggest?

Subject: Re: [Mailman-Users] Too many Bounce action notifications

   From: "Vikram Goyal" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I maintain a medium sized mailing list (over 4) to which a
newsletter is sent out every few weeks. Till recently, I had no issues
with this list, but after the last newsletter was sent out, I have
started receiving "Bounce action notifications" by the truckload.

Just as something else to consider...

Do the bounce messages quote the newsletter or at least the subject line?
Are you sure it is the newsletter that is bouncing? Do the email addresses
returning a bounce match subscribers to your list?

There is a new style of spam (well, not that new) that spoofs your return
address and sends out massive amounts of messages to random people (it has
a specific name I can't recall). Then you get all the bounces (because a
percentage of people will always bounce).

When this has happened to me, I typically get 3-5000 (yes, thousand) bounce
messages over the course of a couple of days. My husband just got his
first one two and it completely overwhelmed his account. It has nothing to
do with running a mailing list, though you are more vunerable if your
address is out there on the net.

What you're describing sounds an awful lot like this. Especially since you
have set up bounces for your list not to come to you. It sounds like the
address that was spoofed was one used by MM, which would slow down the
system for sure.

Of course, I may be totally off here, but I wanted to throw it out there
just in case.
