For what reason is the message held?

If it is "implicit destination", go to Privacy options...Recipient
filter for the sublist and either set require_explicit_destination to
No or add alll...@x to acceptable_aliases.

If it is not "implicit destination", what is it?

[Mailman-Users] Dumb question

2009-01-13 Thread Rich Winkel
I'm trying to set up an umbrella list and having some unexpected
behavior even after reading the faq.

Ok, I have alllist-boun...@x listed as a subscriber to subl...@x, with
no mail and no moderation. I have USE_ENVELOPE_SENDER = Yes in
my mm_cfg.py file. But when I post to alllist and the message is
distributed, sublist holds the message and I receive a moderation message.
What am I not getting :>?

Thanks,
Rich

Yes, there are better tools. If all you want is one 'Newsletter' list,
they will serve you better, IMO.

There is a good FAQ on making a Mailman list do what you want. It is
not hard and requires no hacking at all. Just proper setting of

You might consider finding a host that already supports lists, once you
decide on Mailman or an alternative.

Unless you really need the excitement of the technical administration,
sticking with the moderation/human issues may be the best solution.

I do this for folks.

[Mailman-Users] Dumb question from a newby

2008-02-18 Thread quinnten
This is a question from a complete novice so don't humor me with "there's no
such
thing as a dumb question".

Beckground:
I worked in IT for many years back in the days of DOS 3.3, Lotus 1-2 -3 and
Word Perfect. I've even had the fun of being the sole Administrator of a
Novell Netware network (no bosses) back in the dark days of computing.

Question:
Not being happy with the new fangled and pre-packaged Yahoo Groups, I'd like to
manage my own mailing list. I like to do it myself. Once upon a time I stumbled
across a web-based interface for creating a Mailman mailing list. I even set
up a prototype kinda list as a Newsletter (with nobody able to post except
me/the owner).

Then other passions consumed me. I had a problem with alcohol that I'm proud to
say I have under control. But for the life of me, I cannot remember where on
"World Wide" Web I did this.

Any help given would be appreciated. In the absence of such help, can anyone
refer to a a *GOOD* place to start as far as getting started? This newsletter
is very important. Although this list is exlusively for Mailman... are there
any other suggestions? Or is Mailman a good place to start for someone who is a
little bit familiar with batch files, scripts, CPL's for the AS/400 and such?

Not directly that I know of.

You have to trust them somewhat. They can do stupid things. As long as
they only subscribe themselves and maybe a few others, you are
probably OK. Consider though that they could subscribe a large list of
AOL addresses and send a message to which some significant fraction of
recipients clicks "this is spam" and then your site gets blacklisted
by AOL.

Or, they could set up a large list with "reply to list" and create a
huge mess of "stop sending me this" messages going back to the list
which can bring your server to it's knees and get you blacklisted as
above.

These things are unlikely, and if you're only talking small test list
and just mistakes and not maliciousness, you're probably fine.

Doesn't hurt to be careful.

[Mailman-Users] Dumb question of the day

2005-03-05 Thread Don

Hi;

I'd like to set up a 'test' list for a couple people to see what
they will be working with to administrate a list. It appears to
me that giving someone administrative privelages for a specific
list will not cause any security breech of the site itself.

Therefore, my 'dumb question' for the day is...

am I correct?

Is there any "reasonable" way for someone to mess up anything
outside of that specific list?

It appears that everything is safe... but I'd like to hear
that for certain from someone who KNOWS what they are doing
far better than I do. Sorry if this is an irritation to
anyone.

Thanks
Don

There are several ways to do this.
If you have shell access on the server, I think the easiest is to:
1. become the mailman user
2. change to the mailman/data directory
3. use the bin/discard tool to discard the held messages:
../bin/discard heldmsg-thelist-*
The Mailman FAQ lists (at least) a couple of other ways.

[Mailman-Users] dumb question

2003-11-21 Thread E. Johnston
Hmmmmaybe I'm trying to use Mailman for something it wasn't designed for, but how
do I do a super-simple announce-only mailing list? It's just a newsletter, but though
I set the "where are list replies sent" to "poster", I think the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailing-list address still goes out to everyone (so far, 4 of my e-mail addresses).

This is for a quarterly (maybe monthly, eventually) newsletter.

Also, though I can find the general list info. html page easily enough, from where do
subscribers get to the user options page?

I've looked through the faq's, but can't find these

Thank you!

It is, although this isn't necessarily a mailman setup issue, but more an
MTA's issue. I have a specific server I use for outgoing messages and one for
incoming:

scanner> mailman> outgoing
server server server

All the machines are running an MTA, setup as follows:

scanner server uses the MTA's internal forwarding to the mailman server for
delivery.
mailman server uses the MTA's smart relay to drop outgoing messages onto
the outgoing server which then delivers to the world.
