This method of posting to a 'newsletter' list is insecure. Any list
member who sees the address that posts are From: and wants to post can
just spoof that From: address in his own post. Also, random spam From:
the authorized address and To: the list will be accepted.

The secure method is to leave everyone moderated and post with an
Approved: header as discussed in the FAQs at

There is a web page in the faq about this:
http://wiki.list.org/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=4030685

The essential basics, make sure all new subscribers are moderated, and
never remove them from moderation (so they can't post). Then if they do
post the messages will be held for review (so you can reject them), or
you can set up filters to automatically reject them (though the reject
message will not be very helpful).

All you need to do is set all users to 'moderated', set the reply-to to you
(not the list or the poster),
and disable posting by moderated users. You can join the list and turn off
moderation for your self OR
add you E-Mail address to the list of non-members that can post to the list.

All of this can be done with the web interface.

the delivery a failure and would retry until it saw the expected
response. However, the receiving server did considered the delivery to
be successful, and as such treated the message(s) as valid. Ultimately,
causing duplicated messages.

When investigating the SMTP issue, I found that the problem was related
to network connectivity issues, specifically saturated connection on the

I would start with looking at the logs of your mail server. You want to figure
out where the duplication is occurring. Was it sent to Yahoo more than once? Or
was it accepted by Yahoo just once? If the latter, the duplication is happening
at Yahoo and it is not your problem to solve.

You didn’t say what mail server is being used but SMTP is designed not to lose
mail. Therefore, a duplicate is preferable to losing mail. If the receiving
SMTP server receives the mail but does not tell the sending server it has it
(sending server sends “end of message” but receiving server does not
acknowledge), then the sending server assumes something went wrong and tries to
send it again.

My guess would be it’s either happening between your outgoing SMTP server and
Yahoo (or the next server if you’re relaying through another server) or
internally in Yahoo. It’s very unlikely, particularly since you say it only
happens with Yahoo, that it’s a problem in Mailman. Rather, it’s happening
after Mailman is done with the message so is not a Mailman problem per se.

Look at the logs from your outgoing MTA. These should show all the
interactions with Yahoo and at least give you clues.

For the missing AOL mail, see the FAQ at .

Also look at Mailman's 'smtp' and smtp-failure' logs.

[Mailman-Users] Newsletter Blast sending duplicates to subscribers

2014-01-08 Thread Doug Hutson

Hi,

We've been using mailman for quite a long time now, and suddenly the
last newsletter we sent out sent duplicates to random users as far as I
can tell.

All the people that have e-mailed us about this issue were specifically
yahoo addresses. Reports of 4-50 duplicates per user were sent to
them. We only have one list of users we send users to, and this is the
first time this has ever happened.

I have a few accounts added to the list myself, and my aol account did
not recieve the email at all. Previously the aol account received the
messages, I had a couple of the newsletters in my account still unread.

So, my question specifically... does anybody have advice in what I
should look for as to why this happened? I read a post from 2002 that
was somewhat similar to this issue, but it had to do with not haveing
enough memory... and currently my server has 53gigs free, so that
couldn't be the issue... unless of course you have to 'allocate' memory
to mailman in some config file. We have about 12k users on our list.

Thank you in advance, and let me know if I lacked some details to help
solve my issue.

Thanks,
Doug

90 may be higher than you want here. Assume post 1 bounces, post 2 does
not and post 3 does, if you want the score resulting from post 3 to be
1 rather than 2 because of the apparent successful delivery of post 2,
then you want stale after to be < 30.

You are correct that it must be > 15 or all prior bounce info will be

The same applies here. In this case, this must be > 30 but should be
less than 60 if you want to require 3 consecutive bounces for disable.

No. Once a member's delivery is disabled by bounce, any subsequent
bounces are logged as residual but otherwise ignored, so bounces or
non-bounces of the disabled warning have no effect. The only thing
which will prevent the member from being removed after (disabled
warnings) X (disabled warning interval) days is re-enabling delivery,
either by the member from the member options page or by the admin.

[Mailman-Users] newsletter

2003-11-26 Thread Szederyesi Iosif
Hello,

I have a question regarding the functionality of the Mailman application...
Presuming this situation: I want to use Mailman for a newsletter on my site.
As an administrator, I can add a new user to the newsletter list. When I
want to send the weekly e-mail, I will send a single e-mail to the mailing
list, which will send the message to all subscribed users. I need to
configure Mailman to accept e-mails only from the administrator...so, the
subscribed users cannot send e-mail to the mailing list. Is this possible?
If yes, what should I set in the Mailman's configuration?

The Mailman is installed on the server where my site is hosted. I don't have
root access to install/modify anything on this server...

Thanks in advance,
JB

Re: [Mailman-Users] newsletter list welcome message

2003-02-25 Thread Jon Carnes
Just in case you have not figured this one out yet...

FAQ 3.11 refers to Mailman version 2.1.x

The directory "/usr/local/mailman/lists" already exists. In that
directory you will find subdirectories that are the same as the names of
your lists.

If you have a list named "goober" then you will have a directory:
  /usr/local/mailman/lists/goober

You will also see that there is a file:
  /usr/local/mailman/templates/en/subscribeack.txt

You can copy the entire "en" subdirectory over to your lists
subdirectory (your list does not yet have an "en" subdirectory).
After that, you can edit the files in there and have them be specific to
your list. Neat feature!

Good Luck!

[Mailman-Users] newsletter list welcome message

I've just read the FAQ, and section 3.11 gives good instructions on
making a list into a newsletter.

However, I have fallen at the first hurdle as far as altering the

From the FAQ:

"Create a directory lists//en ... and copy

Where ought I create the "lists" directory? In the mailman folder?
(this did not seem to work)

I'd appreciate any clarification.

someone to approve a message through the web interface?
Yes this is very simple and just by running a test list you will see
how
easy it is. Also, we just talked about this recently so look at the
archives
and you will find lots of information there.

[Mailman-Users] newsletter

2003-02-23 Thread Curt Siffert
Is there a way to keep the email address of a sender from showing up
anywhere in the headers of the resulting email?

I've got a newsletter with everyone moderated except for one user, who
I'd like to be able to post to the list. But if his email address
shows up in the email, someone else could forge it and be able to spam
the list, couldn't they? Unless there's a way to hide the sender's
email address. Is there a better way to handle this without requiring
someone to approve a message through the web interface?

Thanks,
Curt

[Mailman-Users] newsletter / announce-only

2003-02-22 Thread Curt Siffert
I'm on 2.1 and I've followed all the recommended instructions on
setting up a newsletter:
	1) all members with moderate bit
	2) all moderated members with polite reject
	3) all non-members with reject
	4) munged headers with explicit reply-to

Now I'm trying to figure out how to post but it doesn't look like
there's an ideal solution.

1) unsetting the moderate bit for a user allows that user to mail to
the list without intervention, which is great, BUT that user's email
address appears in the Return-Path header in the message source. This
has me concerned about others forging that email address and being able
to post to the list. Is it possible to hide the approved senders'
email addresses entirely?

2) I can put addresses in non-member sender filters for "Hold" but it
would be nicer if they could also be subscribed (which are all
hard-coded to reject). I guess I want an option to say "Have all
moderated members set to Reject, except for these addresses, set to
Hold."

3) I can change everyone to "hold" but I'm worried about weighing down
the moderator.

Any ideas? It's so close to perfect.

Yes... this is possible with Mailman... however Mailman's real
strengths are in the area of discussion lists.

Setting up "one-way" lists must be the most popular question on this
list ...

To make a list announce-only, go to "Privacy Options" and set 'Restrict
posting privilege to list members?' to "No" -AND- add only yourself to the
next field, 'Addresses of members accepted for posting to this list ...'

(Note that the subscribers can always -attempt- to reply to the list;
there is nothing you can do to stop that; even if you set the Reply-To
header, folks can construct a new message any way they want. But,
their attempts to post will be thwarted.)

Yes it can. What version will you have access to?

[Mailman-Users] newsletter question

2002-09-24 Thread J. Alec West

Hello,

I'm considering switching to a webhost that allows
Mailman use and had one simple question.  Can Mailman be set up to be used
as a newsletter ... that is sent to a number of subscribers in such a way that
subscribers cannot "reply" to the subscriber-list?

Yes you can. Take a look at the Privacy Options site.

[Mailman-Users] Newsletter

2001-03-30 Thread Richard Andersen

To whom it may concern:

Our company is looking for a software solution to manage an e-mail
newsletter to our clients and other interested parties on a regular basis.
The letter will be fairly straight forward and go out in tens or possibly
hundreds, but certainly no bigger volume than that. We also want to be able
to manage the whole process internally once it has been set up.

Are you able to come up with a proposal in terms of price, time-line,
technical requirements etc, please?

Thanks in advance.

Create the list, go to the web interface, section "Privacy option", set
"Must posts be approved by an administrator?" to Yes, "Restrict posting
privilege to list members?" to No, and put all addresses you wishes to
use in "Addresses of members accepted for posting".

You may also wish to tweak a little the messages sent when subscribing,
etc.

Greetings,

Can someone tell me the EASIEST way to make mailman mailing lists "one
way newsletters" only? I see it can be done, but not as simple as
with smartlist. Am I missing something?
