[Mailman-Users] Setup problem with Mailman

2011-10-10 Thread Bill Christensen

Hi all,

(cross posted to Macports-users and Mailman-users lists, as I'm not sure
where the answer to the problem is more likely to come from)

I upgraded a server the other day to Mac OS 10.7, and due to a new
version of Macports required an uninstall/reinstall of Mailman.

As seems to be the usual case, the new Mailman/Fetchmail install needs
some tweaks to get it working right - the Dreaded Group Mismatch Error
in Mailman, SSL required but configured --without-ssl in Fetchmail,
etc... I've fought my way through all of those, but...

Currently it's telling me that the location of the MDA, which in the
previous Fetchmailrc file was /opt/local/libexec/mailman/mail/mailman
and worked fine before the upgrade, is a directory which doesn't exist.
 And that's true, it doesn't.

So, the question is, where did it move to? Where *should* Fetchmail be
told that the Mailman MDA is?

Thanks for relieving my frustration.

Re: [Mailman-Users] Setup problem with Mailman

2011-10-10 Thread Bill Christensen

Correction:

The problem below occurred because Mailman had run into an error and
hadn't installed that directory. I figured that one out and it's
installing again.

Now I'm back to a Group Mismatch error once again, and adding the
configure line

--with-mail-gid=staff

(and removing the line --with-mail-gid=${mmgroup} ) as suggested doesn't
fix it.

Next step? It seems I go through this every time I do an install of
Mailman...

[Mailman-Users] setup options

2011-08-23 Thread Carl Cappelen

First time using Mailman (ver. 2.1.14) as administrator.

Trying to set up all options, what I am looking for, if possible is:
When a subscriber receives a message, would like his reply to go back
to the list sever and also to show (e-mail) address of the sender.
This way most reply's go back to the list server, however if recipient
wants to, he send a message to the directly originator of the message.

TIA

Under General Options,

Set Hide the sender option to No. I think this is the default.

Set Where are the replies directed option to This list.

That should do it. Pretty straight forward. It probably took you more time to
find, subscribe, and send to the mailman-users lists than it would have to
figure out these settings.

Good luck with your setup.

See the FAQ at http://wiki.list.org/x/44A9.

Note that if you accept the as shipped defaults of anonymous_list =
No, first_strip_reply_to = No and reply_goes_to_list = Poster, the
recipient of a list post can 'reply' to the poster 'reply all' to the
poster and the list and 'reply list' (if offered by her MUA) to the
list only. Other settings make it more difficult to reply to the
poster only.

Did you add 'hash:/usr/local/mailman/data/aliases' (or whatever the
correct path is) to alias_maps in your Postfix configuration per
http://www.list.org/mailman-install/node13.html?

Are /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases and

Are the entries for the list named 'list' (from [EMAIL PROTECTED] above)
in /usr/local/mailman/data/aliases?

 How do we do that?

For -owner just set what e-mail address you want in the second field
of each list's General Option page of the web admin GUI or set it
when you create the list from the command line.

My approach is to have a list called defadmin and have that as the
owner address for lists we do not have administered individually;
usually because none of the users associated with the list are either
interested in the task or competent to perform it. We then just
subscribe some lucky sys admins addresses to the defadmin list.

For -bounces aliases you could simply redefine the per list aliases
to whatever you want in your MTA aliases database. This alias
redefinition could be automated but beware; if you direct all the per-
list bounces to the same alias outside of Mailman you will lose
Mailman's automated bounce processing which you probably do not want
to do: see the Bounce Processing page of the web admin GUI.

 In the mail received:

 From: poster
Sender: [EMAIL PROTECTED] = how can I change it
  to [EMAIL PROTECTED] (no -bounces)

See towards the end of this FAQ entry for a hack to manipulate the
Sender: header on outgoing messages:

http://www.python.org/cgi-bin/faqw-mm.py?req=showfile=faq02.003.htp

 Reply To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

See options under the heading Reply-To: header munging on the

Re: [Mailman-Users] Setup list to strip attachments?

2003-07-25 Thread John DeCarlo
Chas,

I can't say what CPanel allows you to do or not do. FAQ 3.10 is about
the Privacy Options admin web page.

What you want is available from the Content Filtering admin web page.
Hopefully CPanel allows you access to the same sort of thing.

Here is the intro text explaining how Content Filtering works:
Policies concerning the content of list traffic.
Content filtering works like this: when a message is received by the
list and you have enabled content filtering, the individual attachments
are first compared to the filter types. If the attachment type matches
an entry in the filter types, it is discarded.

Then, if there are pass types defined, any attachment type that does not
match a pass type is also discarded. If there are no pass types defined,
this check is skipped.

After this initial filtering, any multipart attachments that are empty
are removed. If the outer message is left empty after this filtering,
then the whole message is discarded. Then, each multipart/alternative
section will be replaced by just the first alternative that is non-empty
after filtering.

Finally, any text/html parts that are left in the message may be
converted to text/plain if convert_html_to_plaintext is enabled and the
site is configured to allow these conversions.

I'm probably not the ideal person to ask about this. I have the benefit of
a backup server which I use to rehearse MM upgrades and correct problems
before doing the real thing on our dedicated primary MM server. I need to
do that as I use/maintain a number of MM upgrade patches and need to
produce upgraded versions of those when new MM releases come out.

I also use a Sendmail mailer (patch #644810) rather than maintaining a file
of mail aliases. I guess one of the big changes from 2.0.13 to 2.1.1 is the
revised mail aliases for each list and so I didn't have to deal with that.

My own experience with the 2.0.13 to 2.1.1 upgrade was that at a basic
level it was trouble free. I just read the INSTALL and UPGRADE documents
and got on with it.. I tend to take the view that it has to be done and it
will not get any easier by waiting. MM 2.1.1 has some nice extra features
which I wanted the benefit of them. That said I only ran the beta versions
of 2.1 on my backup machine on test; I'm not that keen to risk beta
software for production use.

I suggest a post to the mailman-users list asking about risk/experience on
the upgrade to 2.1.1 will be more useful than any further comment from me.

Best of luck

Richard

My experience my be a little unique because I actually upgraded from
Mailman 1.1 to 2.1.1, but I did run into some problems. About 1/3 of
my lists didn't upgrade properly for some reason so I ended up sort of
painfully reconstructing them from the information I did have. I'd
suggest dumping the configurations of all your lists before you start

Peace,

Hmmm OK. I am trying to do the same thing:
create an announcement list.
The FAQ refers to the following:

Set the member_moderation_action to Reject and add a nice rejection
notice text to the following text box. Say something like this is
an announcement list, to reach the band, please email [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Set the generic_nonmember_action to Reject or Discard.

Those options do not appear to be available in version 2.0.13 (which is
the latest downloadable version of Mailman).

I have no problem with the other settings in the configuration, but it
would be nice to be able to (nicely) auto-reject posts to the list by
those not specified.

Rod

Usually the sourceforge is the best place to get the latest MM.

See: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=103

You will also find patches for the latest stable release on sourceforge
and a CVS repository for the current MM development in progress.
We are a tiny bit cautious about upgrading from 2.0.13 to 2.1.1 on a
live system.

Are there any problems, or advice on things to be careful of?

Hi all,

I'm trying to setup an announce list on which only a few people should be
able to post, but I can't find a good way to do it. I see only a suitable
option general - emergency, but I think that is not the one I should
use...

Can anybody point me right please?

[Mailman-Users] Setup problem w/email commands

2002-07-17 Thread Andrew Maisel

Just installed Mailman v2.0.9 with Python v2.1.3 on FreeBSD, and I'm having
difficulty enabling any active responses to email commands. For example:

o posts to the list result in a copy being sent to the list owner only --
not to the subscribers

o email subscribe requests result in a copy being sent to the list owner,
but do not result in any server responses, i.e. subscriber does not receive
a confirmation email, and is not shown on list of subscribers

o email unsubscribe requests = same problem

o email help requests = blank email response

Suggestions??

Thanks!

[Mailman-Users] Setup MM2.1b2 ...outgoing goes to shunt dir.

2002-06-01 Thread Wayne Ringling

I am trying to install Mailman-2.1b2 on a Gentoo Linux box that is running
Apache and Qmail and dcron and a few other things but they are the ones
needed for Mailman.

The web part is working perfect. I have it set to SMTPDirect and I created
the mailman list as per the instructions. When I add someone to the list it
saves the email msg in the shunt dir under qfiles. Once I get this part
working then I will start on the qmail part. Any ideas why it's going to
shunt instead of out (I presume it should be going into the out dir). All
seven qrunner deamons are running in ps -aux. I do see in
/var/qmail/log/error something about SMTP Server Disconnected, but when I
telnet from the box running mailman to the smtp server it should be
delivering to I can send mail to the person subscribed.

Thanks.

Wayne

Thats because there is no index.html or any other page/script
in the cgi-bin dir that Apache can use as the index. You want
to use the URL http://domainname.com/mailman/listinfo

I already went over some of it, i just do not understand...
I have noticed, that it did not unpack like it supposed too...
it was supposed to create in /home/business/mailman
but instead it made:

/home/business/mailman-2.0.7

Before going any further, you might as well get the latest version of
Mailman, which is 2.0.8, from
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=103release_id=63078

Getting Mailman going is a 2 phase process. Assuming you have
mailman-2.0.8.tgz in your home directory:

1. First you unpack the .tgz file into the 'build' directory. Execute the
following commands while logged on as you, not as root.

 cd
 tar zxf mailman-2.0.8.tgz
 cd mailman-2.0.8

2. You then go into that directory to configure Mailman and then run the
make install which copies the configured, executable version of Mailman
into the directory from which it is normally run.

From what you say, you have unzipped and untarred the .tgz file and
created a build directory as /home/business/mailman-2.0.7. If you wanted
the build directory somewhere else then you could use the UNIX mv command
to move it or delete it and unzip and untar the .tgz file in the directory
under which you want to put the build directory; I usually put the build
directory under my home directory.

Once you have got the build directory where you want it then you will want
to change to that directory. Now follow the instructions in
mailman-2.0.8/INSTALL.

Per the mailman-2.0.8/INSTALL file you will want to have created the UNIX
user ID and group ID which will run mailman: the user named mailman and
group called mailman before you configure Mailman.

If you intend to run Mailman from /home/business/mailman then make sure to
supply this as the --prefix parameter to configure. Also make sure you know
the mail group ID and cgi group ID and supply these as the --with-mail-gid
and --with-cgi-gid parameters to configure.

You will then run the make program in the build directory to install
Mailman in the directory from which you intend to run it.

I do not mean to be rude but if what I've said above isn't making much
sense and you are struggling with the INSTALL instructions you may need to
upgrade your Linux/UNIX administration skills before embarking on using
Mailman. Without some Linux/UNIX adminstration skills you are going to find
operating Mailman and your MTA may produce problems you will struggle to
cope with.

can you supply me a command line that will unpak
it into the correct directory...

Thanks
