Re: [Mailman-Users] server hostname in List address?

2003-12-02 Thread Jim McCarty
Jeff,

Do you still have the output of running the configure script in the
mailman source directory? Look for "checking for default mail host
name" and "checking for default URL host component". I needed to re-run
mine and add --with-mailhost=mydomain.org and
--with-urlhost=www.mydomain.org to the ./configure command line since
it was picking up the machine's full hostname of name.mydomain.org

There might be a setting in one of the python config files but I'm
unfamiliar with what I can and cannot change in those files. My guess
is that the default is compiled in.

Hope this helps,

Jim (using v2.1.3 on 10.2.8)

RE: [Mailman-Users] server hostname in List address?

2003-12-02 Thread O'Reilly, Stuart
 Jeff,

If you look in $prefix/Mailman (where $prefix = the mailman installation
directory) there is a file called Defaults.py. If you open it and look for
the following sections:

DEFAULT_EMAIL_HOST = ''
DEFAULT_URL_HOST = ''

These will be set to your defaults, i.e server1.mydomain.com. I get the
impression that you shouldn't change the Defaults.py file, in which case
copy the two lines to mm.cfg.py and set them to whatever you want and see
what happens.

Stuart

mail notification about held messages. Help still appreciated.

RE: [Mailman-Users] Mailman wont send mail

This list needs a searchable archive. I posted the same thing
only two weeks ago.

Anyway, the way I had to fix it was to add

/etc/rc.d/init.d/mailman start

to my /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. Even though mailman was executable
and in init.d, it wasn't starting. This is with Slackware 9.1.
I'm not familiar with SuSe, but the situation is probably similar.
This new line fixed it for me _most_ of the time. Sometimes, when
I reboot, it still doesn't start and I have to manually type that
command as root, but since I don't plan to reboot very often, it's
not a big deal for me.

Hope this helps,
Jeremy Gilbert

I've not had trouble sending mail, but if you think the MTU is
your problem, you should start by setting the MTU on all machines
to 1492 if your ISP uses PPPoE. If that doesn't help, or you want
to do more detailed diagnostics, head over to broadbandreports.com
and use their tweak test to check your Windows machines. Make
sure that if you do change the MTU than you set the MTU to the
same value on every machine on your network.

[Mailman-Users] How to set nomail flag from command line

2003-12-02 Thread Gabriel Schillaci
Hi.
I developed an interface from my Content Manager to Mailman so people can
create lists, subscribe and unsubscribe using my CM front end.

Some subscribers want to post from different accounts, and obviously want to
receive just one copy to one (main) account, not to all of them.
Then, looking for a workaround, I found that this would work if I set the
nomail flag to those alternative e-mail accounts.

Now, my question: how can I set the nomail flag from a command line?
I browsed the documentation and found nothing to do that.

Any ideas?

Gabriel

[Mailman-Users] Turn off MIMEDefang/SpamAssassin for outbound Mailman posts?

2003-12-02 Thread Gary Goldberg
Hello. I have Mailman 2.13 configured on Red Hat Linux 9 with Sendmail 8.12.9,
MIMEDefang 2.39, SpamAssassin 2.60. I have a separate sendmail -bd daemon running
on a high level port with DeliverMode=defer to avoid the DNS efficiency problem.
All mail inbound to the system is scanned with MIMEDefang/SpamAssassin, and then
re-scanned when the outbound Mailman message is sent.

Is there any way I can turn off MIMEDefang/SpamAsssassin for the outbound
Mailman only? It's tagging my digests as spam (score 5.5) even though the
posts that make up the digest all passed inbound. Thanks in advance. -Gary

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Preprocessor Available - seeking feedback

2003-12-02 Thread Darwin Sanoy
Hello,
Below is the description of a preprocessor script I wrote for mailman. I
was looking to emulate the Topica.com features of "-subscribe",
"-unsubscribe" and "-post-" in an efficient and
extensible manner.

I am seeking feedback on the script and I have two areas that are troubling
right now:
*) I still get a succesful completion AND an error message back from mailman
when sending to "-unsubscribe" (yet I don't get one when sending to
"-unsubscribe" which *should* process exactly the same way. I know I
coiuld re-write the entire message - but I am wondering if there is a way to
make unsubscribe work the same way as subscribe and post - by doing
replacements to the inbound message.
*) I am wondering if there is a way to alter all the messages sent out by
mailman to match my configuration. There are some in "Templates" - but
others seem hardcoded. Right now I am tied to Mailman 2.0.13 due to needing
to stay compliant with the RedHat 2.1AS distribution.

The script can be found at http://desktopengineer.com/mmpreproc

Thanks for any time anyone can take to send feedback,
D.

# This script pre-processes mail commands to mailman to faciliate
announcement lists and easy subscribe and unsubscribe.
# It modifies the list behavior as follows:
# *) unsubscribes only made through the alias [EMAIL PROTECTED]
and automatically sets users password to their email
# *) unsubscribes only made through the alias
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and automatically unsubscribes with no
confirm, email=password is assumed
# *) posting to the list can only be done through a special alias that
includes a password component such as -post-@domain.com.
# The list can be configured for moderation and only allow a specific
list of emails to be automatically approved. Since it is recommended
# that you delete the @domain.com alias, using this method
prevents the need to moderate messages that try to use the standard posting
# alias - even if you do not allow auto approval of posts to specific
email addresses.
# *) This script accomplishes its objectives by having the mail message
piped to it and then it pipes the message into the standard mailman wrapper
for
# processing. This is more efficient than re-mailing back to the same
system. In addition, since the program simply does regex substitutions to
# inbound message headers, the posting password alias can work easily
with complex messages that include mime sections because the entire message
does not
# need to pass through mail again and therefore be disassembled,
reassembled and then emailed correctly.
# *) Many other modifications could be made for preprocessing mailman
commands and posts - the script design is modular and dynamic - it pulls
apart the
# mail aliases components (seperate by "-" character) and decides what
to do with the message based on these components.

# Install
# *) Tested with mailman 2.0.13 (Redhat 2.1AS Version)
# *) Ensure you have Mail:Mailer (mailtools) installed if you wish to have
error notification or debug emails sent, or rewrite the email section
# to suite your system.
# *) Copy mmprepoc.pl to /mail (e.g. "cp mmpreproc.pl
/path/to/mailman/mail")
# *) Change ownership to the mailman user (e.g. "chown mailman
mmpreproc.pl")
# *) Change security to be executable (e.g. "chmod 755 mmpreproc.pl")
# *) For sendmail create a link in the /etc/smrsh directory (e.g. "ln -s
/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl")
# *) Set $mailmanpath - this should be the directory with all your mailman
subdirectories (including "bin") in it.
# *) Set $blockrequests - if set to "1" this script blocks all
[EMAIL PROTECTED] messages except replys to
# subscription confirmations.
# *) Set $emaildiscards, $emailerrors, $emaildebug and $emailnotifyaddress
if you wish to use email notification.

# Configure Mailman (note your lists cannot have a "-" character in their
name):
# *) add the list alias -subscribe:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl"
# *) add the list alias -unsubscribe:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/mmpreproc.pl"

# Configure Mailman: If using the post-password alias feature
# *) add the list alias -post-:
"|/path/to/mailman/mail/subprocessor"
# *) remove the list alias or send it to null so that you don't
have to moderate messages sent there.
# *) in mail man set posting to the list to be only allowed from members
of the list and setup any auto-approval email

[Mailman-Users] Mail Send Limits

2003-12-02 Thread Michael Jasinski
Hi - to whom it may concern :

We have maillist and are using the program provided by our hosting company. However
they seem to have limited knowledge so I need to ask someone ASAP

What is the mail list size limit:

Max # of members?
Max # of members that one list can send?
If limited, by how much and what happened to excess members.

We are on ver. 2.1.3

We currently have something like 10,000 + members in one list, however, I don't feel
all are getting them. I which I could tell. Anyway we were told the max was 1,000 per
list so to break the 10,000 into sub groups?

True?

We are not high tech here, but are heavy mailman users for our private database /
membership.

THANK FOR ANY DIRECTION or HELP IN ADVANCE !

Michael

[Mailman-Users] Mailman Download

2003-12-02 Thread Pröll Josef
Hello,

when I download Mailman 2.1.3 (from list.org, SourceForge and gnu), my
VirusScanner (McAfee)
reports me a Virus!

He says: Virus "Exploit-MIME.gen" in File mailman-2.1-3.tgz found.

Can it be true?

Best regards

If you don't like the mail-archive setup, you can also use

Re: [Mailman-Users] Can I prevent all members, except list manager, from sending mail to the list??

2003-12-02 Thread Mike Hogsett

Alternatively...

replace the "|mailman post " alias with a

LIST: /dev/null

or other destination (which does not go to mailman post)

and then create an unadvertised aliases such as

LIST-really-send: "|mailman post "

perhaps that will do what you want.

Hi,

Go to:

Click the Membership Management link.
And then Mass Subscription.

Follow the instructions on that page.

Good luck.

Mailman queues all mail before the queue runner process (running
continuosly in the background in Mailman 2.1, started from cron in
Mailman 2.0) starts delivery.

What version of Mailman do you have? If 2.1: did you start the queue
runner process? If 2.0: did you copy the relevant entries to the
crontab of your mailman-user (presumably - I'm running 2.1 myself).

[Mailman-Users] How to change the system-wide maximum message size?

2003-12-02 Thread Mark Edwards
I'm running mailman for small lists (under 10 people) but the server is
on DSL connection with a slow outgoing speed (128Kbps). How can I
alter the system-wide maximum message size?

Under no circumstances do I want list members to post messages larger
than a few hundred K, and I don't want to be bothered with
notifications when people try it. I just want to lower the system-wide
max from the rather-large 3MB limit to more like 300K.

I've searched for an hour in vain, but I imagine this number can be
changed somewhere. Anyone know where?

Thanks!

See the INSTALL doc in the mailman source directory, section 4 (Final
system set-up) and follow the 'Create a "site-wide" mailing list'
