[MlMt] Messages (apparently) fetched from an Exchange server don't appear in the MM UI
Hi all I searched the archives for an answer to this but didn't see one. Apologies if I've missed it. I'm trying/hoping to switch to MM, and so far so good. I have added a couple of servers and can send/receive email with no problem. But I also have a work account that I need to use, and it's unfortunately an MS Exchange IMAP server (version 15.1). I added a source for it to MM and the IMAP conversation with the server seems to work, but no messages show up. By this I mean that in the "Sources" list in the left-hand pane (three panes View) I can see the source, but unlike the other two it does not show a message count. If I click on the > next to the source name, I can see a list of folders which looks right, but again with no message count shown (there’s a screenshot at http://jon.es/other/mailmate.png and the Charité source is the problematic one). When I open the log using Command-option-0, I can see MM is talking to the server and apparently fetching messages (log file at http://jon.es/other/mailmate.log ). So it looks like things are working ok, but no messages are shown in the MM UI. The only thing I can think of (which seems so implausible I haven't even tested it), is that I have an Exchange rule to forward all my emails to another address, but the messages are also left on the server. I can see them in Outlook, so they are definitely there, which the log file seems to confirm. Am I overlooking something obvious here? Thanks for any help. Fastmail provides excellent service and a very robust, standards-compliant, infrastructure. After moving many friends, family and clients to them, I recently moved my gargantuan mailbox to them too. Happy customer! 1. I see that Fastmail supports its own version of Labels. Is there something in Mailmate that will recognize those Labels? Perhaps Mailmate Tags? I don't think labels add much value to an IMAP workflow. Going by the documentation, Ethan's notes earlier in this thread and some experimentation, they only affect the Fastmail web interface and their mobile apps. To IMAP clients, tags are folders. Given that you can switch back and forth between folders and labels, I suspect the underlying storage is unaffected by your choice of labels or folders. Note that Fastmail also supports IMAP keywords. As far as I can tell, you can't make these show up in their web or mobile user interfaces the way you can in MailMate, but you can search on them. 2. I see that Fastmail has its own Contacts module, but that doesn't support synchronization with Google Contacts. Will I need to import my Google Contacts into Fastmail Contacts for Mailmate to see my Contacts when composing a message? Or does Fastmail use my Mac Addressbook for this? Fastmail contacts use CardDAV. They work well with every other CardDAV implementation, including macOS and iOS Contacts.app. MailMate will use your Mac Contacts and doesn't care where the data ultimately come from. If you sync your Mac Contacts with Google, MailMate will see them. Fastmail's web interface and mobile apps won't be able to see your contacts stored by Google. I would recommend importing your contacts from Google into Fastmail and syncing them to your devices from Fastmail. I have a lot more confidence in the standards compliance of Fastmail's CardDAV implementation than Google's. Fastmail can import contacts from Google in bulk but it can't keep them in sync. Re: [MlMt] Where is the list of fields? e.g. ${#source.path} (to customize Downloads Sub folder)
Bill, thank you, very helpful to learn that these field names are not “defined” by MailMate but rather whatever is used in the header. I tried both the filenames you kindly suggested and MailMate just saved them in the selected “Default Downloads Folder”. So I tested with the default ${#source.#name}/${#source.path} and attachments still save in the “Default Downloads Folder”, not a Sub folder. Can anyone else reproduce? Is this a bug? This depends on which email app you are using. It looks like Fastmail is generally compatible with IMAP clients, so MailMate should still be an option for receiving email (and probably sending email, too). MailMate uses the Mac address book (“Contacts” app) which can synchronize smoothly (for the most part) with Google Contacts. Note that MailMate also uses existing addresses extracted from part of your email archive, so it’s a bit smarter than just the Contacts app. Basically, if you only composed email messages in MailMate, then no changes would be necessary. I haven’t used Fastmail, but if you use their email apps or web-based client to *compose* email, then it looks like you would have to import/merge your Google Contacts database. The Fastmail address book can sync with the Mac address book the same way Google Contacts does. If you transitioned your contact database to Fastmail, then it would work smoothly with both MailMate and the Fastmail apps. FWIW, automated syncing between the Fastmail address book and Google Contacts is also possible, but it requires some additional software setup. Glenn P.
