[MlMt] Confused About Threading

2020-04-18 Thread Robert DelRossi
Hi, folks. I have a weird problem with Mailmate. Perhaps I misunderstand
how it should be working.

I can't really describe it but to give a short example:

* I get an email today that is addressed to me and Recipient B.

* I "Reply All." The message appears in my Sent Messages folder and
indicates it went to the sender and Recipient B.

* A while later, Recipient B also replies to all.

* In MailMate, I see collapsed outline of the correspondence. It starts
with the original message. If I open the disclosure triangle I see
Recipient B's response, but not mine.

Shouldn't I see the original message, then, at the next level of the
outline, my response followed by Recipient B's response?

The way things are, I don't have an accurate history of the
correspondence among all three of us, and that's troubling to me.

Appreciate your insights!

I think I understand what you’re describing... and if so, it depends on where
you’re looking in MailMate.

You would need to find the message in the “All Mail” smart folder - which
includes all your sent and received messages.

If you look in Inbox or received messages, MM only shows you messages in those
specific folders.

It’s a bit different from Mail.app in that way, which always pulls together the
thread regardless of what folder you’re in when you find it.

I definitely found the MM way a tad confusing at first myself.

Did I understand your question correctly, and did that help at all?

Yes, Pat. That's it and thank you.

I see now that when "Organize by thread" is on, in "All Messages" I have
the full history of the correspondence.

When I first started using MailMate I went a little crazy with my own
folder structure. It may be good, especially now, with a little time on
my hands, to revisit how this all works.

Thanks again for your kind reply.

If your reply is not in the same folder, then no. Sent Messages is a
separate folder..

I BCC myself on everything I send, which for me is easier and cleaner
than looking at All Messages.

2020-04-18 Thread Jon Sutton via mailmate
I deal with this issue by having a rule on the Sent Messages folder that
moves messages into my INBOX. The rules on my INBOX folder then file my
sent messages into other folders. Most of my rules are based on “Any
Recipient”. This mostly implements a feature from Outlook that stores
replies in the same folder as the original message.

Re: [MlMt] Confused About Threading

2020-04-19 Thread Chaim Kram
To deal with the threading issue I simply created a smart mailbox that
combines my Inbox with my Sent mail, and in fact use that as my default
“Inbox”. Then I can always see full threads as well as messages
I’ve sent that are not replies (but want to keep visible for myself
until they reply).

I actually have two smart mailboxes using this scheme, one for
“Personal” and one for “Work”, and so for each one I can mix and
match folders from various mail accounts as needed. HTH.

Re: [MlMt] Confused About Threading

2020-04-20 Thread Robert Goldman
Is it possible somehow to have an INBOX (or smart mailbox) that shows
full threads while showing only those threads that touch the INBOX?
I.e., I'd love to have the full threads for my ongoing conversations,
but I don't want to see threads from All Mailboxes. Specifically, I
wouldn't want to see threads that lie wholly within Archive or that only
touch Archive and Sent Messages.

That requires a notion of "active conversation" that I have insufficient
clue to implement...

Robert,

Is it possible somehow to have an INBOX (or smart mailbox) that shows
full threads while showing only those threads that touch the INBOX?

In the ‘Examples’ folder that comes by default with a new MM
installation there should be a smart mailbox called ‘Personal inbox
with threading’. Does that not work for you? In any case you can use
it as a basis for your own version.
