[MlMt] Silencing the beep when mail is checked

2015-07-27 Thread Paul Hoffman
Greetings. I really dislike the frog-beep when MailMate checks my mail,
and it disturbs those around me. I have already selected "None" for
"Sound" in Preferences -> Counters, but I still hear the beep. Clues?

The UI in "Counters" is a challenge...

There are 4 independent sets of settings there: one for each corner of
the Dock icon a counter can appear in. Each has its own Sound option.
You select which Counter you are dealing with by the unlabeled square of
radio buttons on the left side, so even if a Counter isn't set to show
on the dock icon, it is identified by where it would be if it was.

Did that, still beeps. That is, when selecting the radio button in each
of the four positions, "Sound" now shows "None". Or am I missing
something more subtle?

Hmm, mine's set to Glass, but I've unchecked Notifications on that
screen.

To avoid disturbing my neighbours (and of course my own peace and quiet)
I have all OS X alerts disabled via System Preferences -> Sound -> Sound
Effects. Alert Volume slider all the way to the left and the 2
checkboxes beneath unchecked.

Is this suitable for you?

No, because the notifications that I have for other apps are fine. They

One for Benny: Is it possible to put your own custom sounds into

I've got a 'silence.aif' file here which I created for someone to use as
a ringtone for unwanted calls on his iPhone.

If it's not the right format I can probably convert it to whatever is

In the Mailbox drop down menu (in the menu bar at the top of the
screen), what do you see for Synchronization Schedule? I'm curious
because you're saying you get an alert sound every 5-10 minutes, and
those are choices for this parameter. Mine says Connected, which I
presume means using the IMAP Idle function to get new mail.

You have to look with input focus on the Viewer Window to see which
option is checked.

Others already told you about the 4 counters. The other possibilities
are that you have manually set up a rule to play a sound or that you use
SpamSieve which has its own sound (see its Preferences). Maybe that

For what it's worth, MailMate currently doesn't interact directly with
the OS X notification system. Instead MailMate relies on the third party
Growl framework which uses the OS X notification system when Growl is
not installed. But I consider to remove the dependence on Growl since I
believe Growl hasn't been updated for quite a while. Anyone objecting to
such a change can try writing me off list :-)

Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes. One of the most used features I
have with MailMate right now is to see a notification (via Growl) come
in for something I know is spam, or annoying, or not something I want -
I then go to the menu bar, find the notification icon, click and go to
the row for the notification for that mail item, and select delete.
Often done before the Growl notification has ever left the screen.

But to see the notification appear and have it have a button to "delete"
right there, oh man, yes please!
