Fastmail already has this feature. One can set the "permanently delete when
older than" for every folder in the folder settings of their web interface.
I use it to permanently delete Spams and Trash older than 30 days. On most
mailinglists folders I set this to older than 365 days.

Such static rules should really run on server.

Thanks, I’ll try to sort these mailboxes, and eliminate duplicates (in
addition I have some called Sent, some Envoyés (french for Sent), in
brief there are far too many).

Select the “Sent” mailbox within the IMAP account (under SOURCES)
and give it the “Sent Messages” mailbox type. Then move all emails
from the old mailbox used for sent messages in MailMate to Sent
instead. Finally, delete the now empty and unused mailbox for sent

I'll try to re-iterate: MailMate does not require any particular
mailbox to be used for sent messages (or any of the other standard
mailboxes). **If** the server or some other email client enforces the
use of some specific mailbox then MailMate can be told to use the same
one.

It's naturally a problem if the server and some email client enforces
two different choices and neither is configurable, but there's nothing
MailMate can do about that.

I hope that makes it a bit clearer :)

Each IMAP account can have 1 mailbox assigned to be used for trash
(deleted messages). This is done using “Mailbox ▸ Mailbox Type”.
The universal mailbox always snamed “Deleted Messages” under
MAILBOXES in the mailbox unifies the messages of all mailboxes
assigned to be used for trash in each account.

If you have multiple mailboxes used as trash in an account then you
need to identify the primary one. This is most often the one used by
webmail access if that exists. If not then you might be free to choose
any mailbox. Then delete any other mailboxes used for trash (maybe
move the emails to the primary one first if you like).

Let me know if that was not clear.

While on the subject of Trash, how do I configure Deleted Messages to
automatically flush messages after, say, 10 days? Right now I have to
do a manual select+flush when I remember. I have experimented with my
folder, but not found a solution.

The “Deleted Messages” mailbox actually has an “Empty...” menu
item to make this easier (that'll flush all trash-assigned mailboxes
of all accounts). There's no built-in way to flush it automatically
and I don't think setting up a smart mailbox for it works, because
there's currently no “Delete Permanently” rule action.

(I've been hesitating making any features which involves deleting
anything automatically, because it also opens up the possibility of
bugs with serious consequences, but it might soon be time to at least
add the rule action needed for a smart mailbox.)

Note that some IMAP servers might actually do this for you or have a
configuration to do so.

The next update of MailMate is going to have “Delete” and “Delete
Permanently” rule actions available. This means that one could create
a smart mailbox matching emails older than x days (use “Date-Received
is less than X days”). This smart mailbox can then have a rule which
permanently deletes anything which matches the condition. Note that this
only works if MailMate is always an open application, but this is a
general issue with date-based rules. The “Delete” action simply
moves an email to the assigned mailbox for trash in the related account
(this is/was also possible using the “Move Message” action so it's
kind of redundant).

Re: [MlMt] Trash or Deleted Messages?

2017-01-20 Thread Robert Brenstein
Benny will correct me if I am wrong. As far as I understand it, the
mailbox types are fixed and immutable but the visible names of the
mailboxes in the list, both universal and smart mailboxes, are up to
you. You can name and rename any of them as you wish. MM will handle
them according to their type not name. IMAP servers, shown as sources in
MM, also call them differently. I have a few that call that mailbox
Trash. I have a few that call that mailbox Deleted Messages. I have a
few that actually have both of those mailboxes but only one of them is
of type Deleted Messages and is actively used. One server calls that
mailbox Deleted Items.

In terms of timed deletion, there was a thread just a few days ago which
discussed issues of actions based on timing. My workout is to have a
smart folder that shows messages in trash which are older than set
threshold, so I can just open that mailbox, select all, and delete. Not
automatic but easy enough.

With FastMail you should go with `Trash`. Some IMAP servers actually
tell the email client which one to use by default. This is true for
FastMail:

S: * LIST (\HasNoChildren \Trash) "/" Trash

(The `\Trash` value is a flag which MailMate and other email clients
can and should use. It's described in [this
RFC](https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6154).)

So, in MailMate you should select the Trash folder and make sure its
“Mailbox Type” is Trash. I'm quite sure you can do the same on iOS
although I cannot remember exactly how :) You'll have to google it.

After that you should move all messages in “Deleted Messages” to
Trash and then delete the “Deleted Messages” mailbox.

I hope this helps.

[MlMt] Trash or Deleted Messages?

2017-01-19 Thread Scott A. McIntyre

Hi,

This is one that has been bugging me for a while and I keep pushing it
to the back burner, only to have it flare up at inconvenient times..

I use:

o OS X

o Fastmail

I am pretty sure there are others on this list who do the same.

What is the "right" way to configure MailMate (and, by association,
Mail.app on OS X and iOS) so that deleting a message puts it into the
right folder such that all of the various interacting software see that
folder as the rubbish bin and treat it as such?
