Re: [MlMt] UK email provider recommendations
Thank you everyone, all very useful. Looks like Fastmail has the votes, and I should ignore distance! Another potential provider I have found is Migadu (www.migadu.com), seems very interesting, does anyone have any experience? Seamus PS once I get the provider sorted I will be shifting all my colleagues to MailMate, could be interesting! Re: [MlMt] UK email provider recommendations
Sam Hathaway wrote, quoting Seamus Phillips: FastMail seems ideal, but servers are quite remote (New York based if I understand correctly). Perhaps I am being over cautious about distance… While FastMail is an Australian company, their servers are located in New Jersey. I agree that you’re being overly cautious about the distance. I've been using Fastmail for four years, from Los Angeles, which is about the same distance. Speed has been fine. Regarding moving to Fastmail (in December, 2015), they have their own migration tool, so I tried it with a small account. It does get the job done, but it's rather slow, and the only indication of progress was three tiny dots flashing in the very small new mail count icon on their web page. So, I decided to use imapsync for my own mail (40,000+ messages in 170 folders). I went into work where I have my own OC-3, thinking well, it should be quite zippy there. I did see 3.8MB/sec from my old server, but Fastmail topped out at just 872KB/sec, so I could've just stayed home... This is a very nice, actively maintained tool for migrating IMAP accounts - http://imapsync.lamiral.info ビリー ヨーデルマん +1 310 839 7673 http://MIX.ORG/ ___ mailmate mailing list mailmate@lists.freron.com https://lists.freron.com/listinfo/mailmate

I can warmly recommend [Runbox](https://runbox.com) based in Norway. They seem to take security and privacy seriously and are GDPR compliant etc. Cheers Ian ___ mailmate mailing list mailmate@lists.freron.com https://lists.freron.com/listinfo/mailmate

Perhaps I am being over cautious about distance… Distance isn't a real problem: there are some nice images showing the topology of some connections. But GDPR will be a bigger issue as safe harbour or whatever it's currently called, isn't sufficient if personal data is a concern. You will need a EU-homed servers but this is what most providers now offer. But 50 GB for a single mailbox will be expensive. Thanks all for the recommendations. A bit more info: - Currently host in-house, are looking to move to a managed ‘cloud’ service to reduce maintenance - Looking for whole domain, with around 20 accounts plus aliases - Need up to 50GB storage on one address (most addresses much less) - UK or EU based (to keep local) - Happy to pay FastMail seems ideal, but servers are quite remote (New York based if I understand correctly). If the first then GMX is pretty robust, if the second then I've found domainfactory to be pretty good for something with minimal setup and maintenance, but the choice is pretty wide. OTOH there is also OwnCloud, for which there are several providers with free plans. Re: [MlMt] UK email provider recommendations
You can roll your own with Message-In-A-Box (MIAB). https://mailinabox.email/ We use it on a VPS Ubuntu 16.04 server. Yes we know it should be on Ubuntu 18.04 but nobody has OpenVZ containers for Ubuntu 18.04. Takes about 60 mins to do from start to finish, most of that time is setting the server up. The server becomes an appliance and it just works for us. It sorts out certificates and mail group aliasing. We also run simple web servers (no PHP) easily and quickly. We have the smallest VPS plan and it's fine. You do need to be familiar with the command line and to be happy to run your own server, but I spend no more than 10 mins a month managing it.
