Hi Dawn,
Jim Peterson and Shobhit Chandra at Monash University in Melbourne work
closely with the Geography Teachers Association of Victoria to bring about
the annual AURISA GIS in schools competition. Either Jim or Shobhit could
refer you to individial teachers in high schools. Knowing them both quite
well, I expect that they would be delighted to help you.

 Hello ListersI
have been approached by a teacher from one of our local schools who is
intending to start teaching GIS principles to year 8 to 12 students (ages
13 to 17 years).  If there is anyone who subscribes to the list who
would be willing to share information about the type of work that they
do using MapInfo and maybe answer questions from the students over a period
of time would you please send me your email address.  Also any teachers
in schools around the world might like to start exchanging ideas with the

MI web based mapping??

2000-03-29 Thread Doug Pease

Hi list members,

I am looking at other available options of getting GIS information
accessible to more users within our corporate environment. At present a
customised MI runtime version is used on many Win95 & NT PC's as a general
information enquiry tool. A couple of MI Pro versions are also used by those
who create data sets. All data files are accessed from a server. ODBC is
also used to incorporate MS ACCESS data.

With all the hype about web based mapping and some of the very impressive
sites I've seen, should this be the way we should be heading. If this is the
case where do I start? Obviously economics will be a major issue.

Is web based mapping difficult to set up and maintain, and what are some of
the pitfalls and advantages.

How customisable is web based mapping using MI software and can I continue
to use MB. Will I need to use other scripting languages as well ??

I would appreciate any experiences that anyone would like to share on this,
particularly from another Local Government organisation.

Thanks.

RE: MI Custom Pie (?) Maps

2000-03-29 Thread Crompton, Mark

Hi Michele,

I have a tool that reads an Excel File, Text File or Access Database table
and generates 'pie' shaped wedges. It is used in the cellular field, where
the location is determined by Lat/Long, and the 'pie' represents a sector.

To implement something you want, it sounds like you would need a table with
the following data:
Lat, long, shape, radius, value1, value2,... (depending on shape)

This can be done in MapBasic.

RE: MI query one column

2000-03-29 Thread Jeff James

Susan,

Try this

Select Columns: NAME, Count(*)
>From Tables: YourTable
Group By: NAME
Sort By: 2 Desc

That will give you a unique list of all the names in your table, sorted by
the second column (Count) so that those with duplicate entries will show up
first.

Hope it helps,

RE: MI School GIS projects

2000-03-29 Thread Peter Graham

Dawn,
I have
also been approached to give lectures at Secondary Schools in the Mackay (Qld,
Aust) District and am putting together some data and course notes for the first
1hr lecture on Monday.

The
topics I have been asked to cover are:

GIS
and Tourist Resorts
GIS
and Landcare
GIS
and Agriculture
GIS
and Emergency Services and
GIS
and Catchment Analysis
I have
been told that GIS is now part of the Geography curriculum in Secondary Schools
in Queensland (13 to 17yr olds).
I am
of the opinion that this is a golden opportunity for GIS professionals to play
an important role in the education of potential users of spatial information -
some of these students will also end up being part of our rapidly-growing
client base.
I am
also of the opinion that GIS software will/has become yet another tool in the
array of desktop packages that these young budding professionals will utilise in
the day-to-day decision making processes in their selected
career.
To
that end, education in the appropriate uses of spatial information as the most
relevant aspect of GIS education and, as such, will form a major part of my
lectures.
I
would be very interested in the responses you receive from your email and would
be willing to exchange with you my lecture notes, data (where
copyright allows) and any more information that may be useful in getting the
right information to these students.

MI PDF Text

2000-03-29 Thread Brenda

Here I am once more hoping to get your help for a problem I am having.

We were creating some PDF files with a lot of text. Some of the vertical
text is being either compressed or expanded. We have found that the text
that is involved seems to have one thing in common, that it has a decimal
number, (example 90.1). If the decimal is 0 it seems to be okay... it
only happens when there is a number greater that 0. Our problem is that we
have a lot of text that needs to be fixed, and we're hoping that someone can
help us figure out how to solve this in Adobe 4.0 or how to select all the
text that has a rotation with a decimal greater than 0 and then change it to
0 in MapInfo.

Thanks again for all your help

MI Custom Pie (?) Maps

RE: MI MapX....and integrated mapping

2000-03-29 Thread Richard . Burkmar

Haavard,

If you want to make a VB application which has MapInfo mapping, you have two
choices:

1. Integrated Mapping
2. MapX

For integrated mapping you only need VB and MapInfo Pro. Your VB
application takes control of an instance of MapInfo through OLE. You can
hide the main MI Pro window and host its document windows in your forms, or
you can leave MI Pro visible and allow the user to work with it and your
application interface side-by-side. Some MapBasic elements will almost
certainly be required in all but the simplest applications. This approach
can be very effective but you may find it a little 'clunky' and hard to get
used to. Users of your application must have MapInfo Pro installed to.

MapX offers a much more integrated approach by giving you a Map object as an
ActiveX control which you can place directly on your VB forms. If you are a
seasoned VB programmer but have little MapBasic experience, then this
approach will seem much more natural and intuitive to you. However there
are some differences between MapX and MapInfo Pro which need getting used
to. You can distribute your applications to users who don't have MapInfo
Pro, but you must pay a small royalty to MapInfo everytime you redistribute
the MapX OCX.

Good luck,

Richard Burkmar.

Dir sir,

My company bought "Mapinfo Professional 5.5" and "MapX V4.0" from your agent in china
one month ago.I registered the Mapinfo Professional last week(The mode of "One
hardware ID,one license key").

But how to register MapX V4.0?
Because There is no blank to enter license key in MapX application and there is no
step appeared to enter S/N in course of installation.
Please tell me how to solve the problem.
Thank you every much.

MI: CMYK colours in Mapinfo

2000-03-29 Thread Bob . Mijwaard

Dear Listers

I would like to use a CMYK palette in Mapinfo instead of a RGB or HSV
palette.
Is there any Mapbasic program or something else available?

Regards,
