MI 6, workspaces, and printing
With the help of some fine people at MI and some pure BS luck, I found out some interesting things about Windows NT and MI 6. Problem: I would save a workspace in MI 6 specifying a paper size, say 36 x 36, and printer, in my case HP 750C. If I looked at the .wor in Notepad, it showed all the proper info, but when opened in MI, the layout would show 8 1/2 x 11 and my default windows printer, in this case, a laser jet. Every time I opened a .wor, I would have to go thru' the Page Setup, and all the dialog boxes that entails. Solution: Start...Settings...Printers. Select the HP750, then File...Document Defaults and set up a few custom paper sizes. What this does is make these non-"Office" paper sizes available to applications. Note that you will need the latest drivers from HP to be able to set up custom sizes. Also, these custom sizes are now available from the sizes drop down list in the printer dialog box. According to Andrei Veselov at MI, MI searches for printer info in this order: 1) MI tries to set printer information for the printer info specified in a workspace 2) If it fails (it might fail because of papersize), MI tries to set it to MI Preferred printer 3) If 2 fails, then it goes to Windows default. I'm happier today, and I hope this also helps at least one other person. MI RE: who mapinfo-l
Thank you, Bill, for slamming the door in our favour. MI 6 "enhancements"
Just upgraded to v 6.0. Good news, bad news. I can now view ER Mapper images, but... A few things have come to my attention so far. First, I am unable to modify a thematic map saved in a v 4.1.2 workspace, even if I save it in v 6. I open the legend...styles and change the colour of an individual value. Change colour...OK...OK... and the colour on the map reverts to what it was. I had to edit the .wor and open in 4.1.2 to modify. Second, even tho' MI 6 saves printer info in a workspace, it does not display this in a layout when re-opened. I have a LaserJet set as the default printer on my PC. When I create a workspace with a layout, set up to use the roll feed DesignJet (36 "), the next time I open the workspace, it shows default printer settings. Third. I prefer to do the page setup before I create a layout. However, with MI 6, the page setup doesn't "take". If I do page setup for a large sheet and set the printer, then when I create the layout, it shows the default laser jet settings. Any ideas? MI MB upgrade??
I currently use MapBasic version 4.1 We have just upgraded MI to 6.0 Are there enough enhancements in MB 6 to make it worth it? The other factor is that we will be keeping some users in the office on MI 4.12, so any network apps would still need to be written in MB 4.1 Ummm, did I just answer my own question?? RE: MI Create a layout from MapBasic
If you have a particular Layout you like in a workspace, you can also cut & paste the code from the .wor into the MB code. Often, it is easier to make the Layout in MI (manipulate the windows), save as .wor, and then paste the code. MI Video card question
Sorry for misleading you. I'm not having any problems. I'm just wondering if upgrading the card improves the graphics performance while using MapInfo. Actually, this is my second PC with a Matrox in it and I've been very impressed with both. Always looking for ways to get an edge on the clock. (Not that a few milliseconds will enhance life that much!) MI Video cards & memory
Not directly MI related, but I need to pick your brains... I am currently running a Matrox G200 video card with 8 meg. Have any of you users noticed any/much advantage by upgrading either the card or adding more vram? Is it worth the cdn$1000 to get a new card? Does more vram improve the refresh speed? Any suggestions/opinions welcome. Gerald Kornelsen -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
MI ER mapper plugin
Thanks to all who responded. I guess I should have known to go to the er mapper site - DUOH! Way too obvious. There seems to be a discrepancy on their site: one place states the plug-in works for version "4 and 5". In the online doc., it states that you need at least version 5. Anyway, I downloaded the plug-in, and it doesn't work with 4.12. Oh well. I'll just have to wait till MI 5.5 makes its tortoise journey to my desk. er mapper to MI fromat
I have been handed some CDs with images in er mapper format - each image is a pair of files with .ecw and .ers extensions. Does anyone out there have a translater or add-in so I can view these with MI 4.12? I know I'm a few years behind, but the 5.5 upgrade is "in the mail". Any ideas? MI Graph button ID, menu edits
Look for the file "Mapinfow.mnu" in your Mapinfo folder. Open this in a text editor and look for a section called "Buttonpads". Remove references to the Graph buttons. You can also remove all other Graph references in the menus. You can also customize the look of all the menus, including right click ("Shortcut") menus. Standard obvious statement: Make a backup of Mapinfow.mnu before the edit. MI Lessons learned
>From the DUOH!, slap-to-the-forehead department... Yesterday, I re-ordered a table (232 rows, 2 cols - name & number) so the records would be in numeric order. Today, I opened a workspace created previously which opens and displays the newly re-ordered table. I had used the workspace to move and/or rotate most of the labels for aesthetic reasons. The labels all appeared in the wrong place. The lesson learned: MI uses the Object number from the table in the workspace. If you re-order the table, all the objects are re-numbered. When you open the workspace, MI uses old Object numbers and applies them to the records as it finds them in the table. Makes for a very interesting, but useless, map. So, today I have spent considerable time cutting & pasting the offending Object lines in all the other workspaces that use that table. Isn't technology fun?!? Question: is this still the case with later versions of MI? I still use 4.1.2.
