Our experience with MapXsite and MapXtreme is that the performance is just incredible.
One of our clients set up an application which accesses 6 GB of data (2.5 GB vector
and 3.5 GB of raster) and the response times are all under one to two seconds on their
Intranet (way faster then MapInfo itself). The response time mostly only depends from
the size of the images returned, means basically only from the number of pixels and
the content, so that response times on the internet only depend from your connection
speed. To speed it up even more, we are currently developing a "dynamic" JavaScript
front end (no "heavy" applets), which will be online in a few weeks. If you are
interested to see that, just let me know.
I don't know to much about ArcIMS ... except that all the sites I visited up to date,
their major feature is the "please wait routine", one site even stated "pls. be
patient, might take few minutes ..." and it was like that, even with a 500kb speed
connection ...
