RE: MI Minding Your Business with MapInfo

1999-07-13 Thread Thomas Gülden

Hi,

Since they are some discussions about MapInfo literature on the list right
now, I would like to remind the list community of the excellent book of Ian
Johnson : "Understanding MapInfo". This book has a real unbiased approach,
demonstrating MapInfo's goodies and weaknesses. Really easy to understand.
Unfortunately the book is dated of 1996 and its information is based on
MapInfo 4.0.

I wonder if somebody knows if this great books has received any update
already or if a new edition is planned. (If the author watches the list,
perhaps he can inform us.)

Regards

Another book on MapInfo worth a look is "Inside MapInfo Professional -
2nd Edition", 496 pages, published 1999 by On Word Press.

This is a User Friendly Guide to MapInfo, not a rehash of the MapInfo
User manual. The tutorial section has 12 chapters that cover basic
and advanced functionality. All chapters include demonstrations and
examples utilize a companion CD-ROM that is included. The Case
Studies section presents examples in 5 different industries.

We are offering the book free, with MapInfo 5.5 upgrade orders.

Gareth,

Yes, I bought the book. I found that it was not technically oriented at
all. Really was just a very broad look at GIS and what you can do with it.
Didn't really explain the concepts of GIS, nor was it imaginative in its
discussion of MI/GIS capabilities.

I got it for free (as a "thank you" for participation in the MI Pro 5.0
beta test process), and thought it was worth every penny I paid for it.

Seemed to me it was simply a compilation of loose documentation of some of
the mapping projects they had done for clients. It really didn't get into
any depth on details or theory. I believe I threw it away, or I'd send you
my copy.
