Re: MI-L Linking MapInfo polygons to an Access database

2001-01-23 Thread Justin Elzik

Hi everyone,

oh and hello Caroline, hope everythings OK. Of course
third party software is the easiest way of producing
such links. However I though I'd mention that the DDE
conversations that I mentioned a while ago can quite
easily be held in either direction between MapInfo and
Access, although I have not done this as its not
necessary for our needs.

It is also worth noting that Word, Excel, Outlook and
pretty much any Office Application can accept a DDE
conversation thus making it quite possible to link to
text documents, pictures, send e-mail etc.

I'm not trying to step on anyones toes, just letting
people know what options there are because this is a
really useful function.

Re: MI-L Combined Polygons Lose Transparency

2001-01-23 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi Alex

Have you considered looking at 'Discover' - the GIS solution for Geologists?
It allows you to tidy up polygons, donuts etc, so that you don't have a
problem with transparency, and also to set up colour tables (for
automatically shading your polygons according to lithology) as well as
having some special geological symbols and fill styles, and allowing you to
create new and truly 'see through' shading. As an added bonus there are a
number of other handy tools such as plotting drillhole data.

Have a look at www.encom.com.au for more information.

Hello Listers

Some time ago it was discussed but I work in another place now, problem
is the same...
I create a tables with many polygon objects (geological layers).
Some of these objects have been combined and as result this one polygon
lose its transparency. More - Region Style shows that there are not
any background,I tried to change Foreground to another style - had the
same results. "Transparent" object isn't transparent. I splitted one
of this object into previous values and they are transparent again,
but I have more than 100 layers and 1 objects. Too much for
handicraft...
Now question : What is a reason and how can I avoid this trouble ?

Re: MI-L Re:Save as Default

2001-01-23 Thread Caroline Hilton

Hi Alberto

The 'save as default' will always be unchecked, even if you have just saved
it. What it does is save the toolbars so that next time you open MapInfo
they are in the locations where you just saved them (except with some third
party toolbars which have a habit of floating wherever they like!). The tick
box is unchecked so that you can re-save if you move toolbars around.

When a choose Save as Default in the Toolsbar Options Dialog Box, and then

Save as Default is uncheck.

Does anybody know why?

Cuando hablo la caja de Herramientas y le pongo que Save as Default,
presiono OK y despues vuelvo a consultar la caja de herramientas, el cuadro

alguien por que? Hay algun problema con mi version de MI? Estoy utilizando

Re: MI-L Linking MapInfo polygons to an Access database

2001-01-23 Thread Caroline Hilton

Fair point, Justin. Congratulations on getting your links working using
MapBasic. MapLinker and other similar software packages are around to make
it easy for people not familiar with MapBasic, or for those who don't have
time to iron out the bugs and want things working immediately. There is
obviously room for both approaches, and it depends on one's requirements.
That's the great thing about this list - the ability for people to solve
each others problems in as many different ways as possible. The nice thing
about MapLinker, I think, is that it is available in the MapX version for
end users not familiar with MapInfo, and in this case works out a lot
cheaper than buying lots of MI Pro copies and training users.

By the way, is anyone else not receiving all the list messages? I didn't get
the one I sent to the list a couple of days ago (below)!

cheers

Hi Scott,

You should find the code shown below in the MapBasic Samples\Lib directory
(Mistdlib.mb). This code creates a semi-colon delimited list which can be
read into a listbox. Alternatively, if you want to produce an array, set up
TableArray(1) or similar, and redim to add each table in turn within the

Hope this works for you.

RE: MI-L Combined Polygons Lose Transparency

2001-01-23 Thread Lawley, Russell S

Alex,
you are definitely not alone I am, at this very minute trying to work
out why some of my landslip polygons have a white background, despite MI5
claiming they are transparent. It appears (in this map) to be due to two or
more polygons overlapping, where the a 'hatching' pattern has been set for a
transparent background. Sometimes I get lucky and the 'bug' makes the
underlying polygon non-transparent, but sometimes I don't get lucky and i
have to play hunt the polygon. Only solution I 've got so far this morning
is to set the pattern fill to 'none' and just use a bold polygon boundary
style to show the margins of the object.

ps was it me or was the list spectacularly quiet yesterday?

MI-L ODBC live access

2001-01-23 Thread Verhoef, Patricia

Dear MI users,

I've been trying to get live access to a MS Access 97 query within MI, using
Cache on or off. Live access to a MS Access 97 table seems to go fine,
although updating the data only works if updating is done in Access and not
within MI. If I try to access the query in MI the notification "single
numeric key column is required on the table".

The final goal is to have data maintenance within MS Access and Map display
in MapInfo Proviewer. MapInfo Proviewer does not have the possibility to
refresh the data using ODBC, this makes opening an ODBC linked table/query
not possible.

Can anybody help me with this?

MI-L Message Archives updated

2001-01-23 Thread Bill Thoen

I just added the December 2000 message archive to the collection
at http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l/digest/.

I also cleaned out the viruses in 2000-Aug.zip (note: those who
maintain other archives, the KAK worm was running amok here in
August.) If you know of any other archives with viruses in them,
please let me know. BTW, these archives are text files, so you
can't get a virus directly from them. You would have to load a
message into your browser and then run the attachments to
contract any pathogens.

I'll suggest to everyone again to post messages in PLAIN TEXT
instead of MIME/HTML formatted mail, and don't send any
attachments. This will greatly reduce the likelihood that you
will accidentally infect the earth should you get a virus from
some techno-feeb who lives under a wet rock.

Oh, and you can get rid of all those stupid disclaimers that take
up more than two lines. A statement of "confidential email" loses
all its force when your message is posted in a public forum, and
email messages are already considered copyrighted by the owner
anyway. Those disclaimers that are bigger than the messages they
are attached to are just plain ridiculous and they waste space. I
doubt they are worth as much as a ball of marsh gas in court,
either.

Also, just because your message says its been swept for viruses
doesn't mean that it has trapped every evil thing, or that it
hasn't been infected further down the line. If you make a claim
that you are virus-safe and someone gets infected from your mail,
you might end up with a lawsuit anyway. Disclaimers on public
forum messages are just plain worthless.

Please consider these suggestions.

if you go to the Tools Menu, than click Tool Manager, you will notice a "Add

Click this, type in the name of tool in the new dialog window, browse for
its location by clicking the button to the right of the second edittext box,
and then place a description of the tool.

Once you have clicked OK scroll down the Tool Manager until you find that

MI-L Shareware - Workspaces??

Hi list,

Does anyone know whether there is a shareware tool / app that will allow
you to save a workspace and publish it on an intranet for use / viewing
by end users? I know that I can do "save window as" and save as a JPEG,
which is what I have done, but I was hoping to include some basic

Another thought - is there some way a workspace can be saved as an

Please advise,

Re: MI-L Shareware - Workspaces??

2001-01-23 Thread Catherine Lessard, KOREM

Hi Anitra,

I don't know about any particular freeware/shareware tool to do what you are
asking here. But I can suggest you take a look at our product, Push'n'See,
which allows you to do just that. Push'n'See 3.1 allows MapInfo users to
publish their own workspaces and publish them over the internet or the local
intranet. It allows authorized users to navigate through your map (panning,
zooming...), interrogate the .DAT files and even download the source
workspace or print the map.

You can check out our demo version at www.pushnsee.com. Hope you find
something to suit your needs!

Re: MI-L Batch Universal Translator

2001-01-23 Thread Catherine Lessard, KOREM

Hi Jason,

Here's a small input: It is possible, using Universal Translator, to select
numerous files at once. I haven't done it with SDTS files, but it works fine
with Esri's SHP files. Although it is not any faster, you can just let the
computer do its job.

Good luck!

RE: MI-L Batch Universal Translator

2001-01-23 Thread Jason McMahan

Sorry- I should have been more specific about my problem:

These SDTS files are located in several different directories. Because many
of them have the same names, I cannot put them all in the same place, and
therefore cannot "shift-click" and select more than one in the open file
dialog box.

Of course, I could theoretically re-name each of the SDTS files (or more
precisely, each of the 18 .ddf files), but I think that would be, well,
stupid.

I'm open to any suggestions anyone may have!

Re: MI-L Batch Universal Translator

2001-01-23 Thread Ian Erickson

Jason,
Have you considered using one of the DOS-Based SDTS to MIF conversion
utilities and writing a batch file to process all of them? For instace, the
late-great Sol Katz wrote a SDTS to MIF conversion utility called
SDTS2MIF.EXE. You could, for example write a batch file to process each
SDTS file sequentially:

1) Write a batch file that calls another...

[SDTS.BAT]
call trans C:\SDTS\AR\ 1234 01
call trans C:\SDTS\AL\ 1235 01

and so on...

2) Write the second batch file to receive parameters from the first...

[TRANS.BAT]
cd %1 'Where %1 is the path to the actual data
call sdts2mif %2 %2 %3 'Where %2 is the 4 digit id and %3 is the file id
for the LE file...
cd ..

I know that this will seem absolutely archaic to the "Windows Generation"
but it does get the job done!

MI-L Optimizing the Search-method in MapX

2001-01-23 Thread Poul Skyum

Hi

Can anyone tell me if MapX 4.5 is able using the MapInfo Column-indexing,
optimizing the search-time when using the Search-method.

As far as I can see, MapX does'n use the column-indexing in that the
search-time, when searching whith MapX is much longer, compared to the
search-time making a similar search(selection) in MapInfo.
Searching in large datasets especially i very time-consuming.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

many thanks

RE: MI-L Divide one poligon in two

2001-01-23 Thread Eduardo Nuñez

hola nuevamente,
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/

si no te queda claro hazmelo saber...

RE: [Re: [MI-L Editing with MapXtreme]]

2001-01-23 Thread Stanley Ng

Hi,

We are developing both MapXtreme Java and MapXtreme NT in China.

The approach to edit annotation layer (text object) is a bit danger
since MapXtreme Java 3.0 does not support Text Object while
MapXtreme NT supports Text Object. It means, the work on NT
version cannot be easily translated to Java version.

I do not exactly knows the demand for "edit the maps with MapXtreme"
Hope I am not saying something too irrelevant to the demand.

Bien sur il nya aucune relation entre Annotation Layer et le dossier TAB.
mais..

ofcourse there is no particular relation between an annot layer and a tab.
but the only editable layer (if you are working localy with TABs)
is annotation layer. In order to edit a particular tab you must select records
from TAB and edit them in the annot layer. This will not result a change in
the TAB file. By the way, you can use unlimited anotation layer, there is no
limit.

"Antoine Gilbert, KOREM" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:
I think you are wrong, annotation are not tied to a particular map layer. An
annotation layer is something like a cosmetic layer in MapInfo, no direct
relation with a tab file. Edition of informations (objects) in an annotation
layer can't result in modification in tab file (i.e. map, dat, or tab) of any
layer. But maybe it's ok for the question's sender..

Re: MI-L Shareware - Workspaces??

Hi Anitra

You could also try Proviewer V6 which is available free from Mapinfo.com
It allows users to access tables & workspaces with most of the view,
print etc functionality of Mapinfo, although there is no editing
capability, which is perhaps what you are looking for anyway??
