RE: MI-L Proviewer default Highlight type

2004-12-03 Thread Peter Horsbøll Møller
Hi Mathieu,

The highlight type is stored togetherwith the rest of the MapInfo Preferences
in the MapInfow.prf. So to make another user on the same or a different
computer use the same highlight styles as you have chosen, you'll need to give
them your MapInfow.prf. And do remember to copy it to the right directory

You will find the MapInfow.prf file here: C:\Documents and
Settings\\Application Data\MapInfo\MapInfo\ where should be
replaced with you Windows username. This location is used if you are using
MapInfo 6.5 or newer. If you have an older version the file will be located in
the Windows directory.

If you have a MapInfo 6.5 or newer you can use this trick to exactly find the
location of the file:

In MapInfo open the MapBasic window and enter this line followed by hitting
ENTER on the keyboard:
Print LocateFile$(0)

Subject: MI-L Proviewer default Highlight type

Hi all

I have created a mapspace, and have changed the
Options-Preferences-Styles-Region Highlight settings on my PC's Mapinfo to very
clearly show which areas are selected, but when i open this same workspace in a
colleague's Proviewer, the highlight is the default 'light hatching"

is there a way to change this? i can't find the option in Proviewer and am too
inexperienced to know how (if it's even possible) to write this into the .WOR

Cheers very muchly in advance

MI-L Oracle Interoperability

2004-12-03 Thread Campbell, Keith A
Listers,

One of the supposed advantages of sticking your geographic data into Oracle
Spatial is the ability to access that data from different GIS client
applications. However, it's not as simple as that because the GIS apps
require additional information in the database in order to operate. MapInfo,
Autodesk, Laser-Scan and Intergraph all embarked on an Interoperability
initiative and published a combined white paper last year. Laser-Scan and
Intergraph have free Interoperability Kits, to enable this data-sharing,
available on their websites. However, I can't find anything similar on the
MapInfo and Autodesk websites, nor any details about how to make this
sharing possible by 'manual' means. And they produce the products (Autodesk
Map and MapGuide, MI Pro) I'm currently interested in using with Oracle
Spatial. Can anybody shed any light on what needs to be done to get these to
talk to Oracle?

MI-L Query and data manipulation speed .dbf vs .dat

2004-12-03 Thread Kent . Treichel
Just curious if anyone has compared the realtive speed of queries,
indexing, and table structure changes between native .dat files and .dbf
files.
I have recently defaulted to dbf files due to the ability to use the same
file across MapInfo, Excel, SPSS, and a geocoder. Very handy, but am I
shooting myself in the foot when it come to efficient MapInfo work?
All opinions welcome.

Re: MI-L Query from a query not saved in cloned view

2004-12-03 Thread Susan
Thanks Steve,

I actually have been using the Query drop down menu to do all the queries. I
think the problem lies in the fact that I first had to do a join query (using
SQL Select and combining 2 tables) and then doing independant queries off of
this resulting joined table (using Select menu and giving them new names).
MapInfo didn't seem to want to remember these subqueries (created from the
Select menu) from the joined table.

When cloning the map window (or saving it to a workspace), it remembers the SQL
Select query to create the joined table (as expected), but not the queries I
made off of the joined table using the Select function.

I just thought that MapInfo would remember all the queries, as long as a name
was given to the resulting selected table.

Stephen Chan <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

All other queries that are generated manually (ie picked out by the

MapInfo by default saves all queries generated by the query drop down
menu by default. the setting can be found here: Options >
Preferences > Startup

If you would like to save the queries that you have generated manually
then you will have to do a File > Save Copy As, Open the saved Table
and then perform your thematic map and clone map operations on it.

Probably not since *.dat files are essentially *.dbf files anyway.

MI-L Problem with Create point coordinate systems?

2004-12-03 Thread James Stott

I am fairly new to MapBasic but have experience of programming in other
languages. I have hit a problem while trying to write a mapbasic tool.

Firstly, the user opens a map window with a table that the user
specifies in a FileOpenDlg.

Once this table has been opened and is displayed in a mapper window, I
try to extract the min_x, min_y, max_x and max_y coordinates using the
MapperInfo() function.

The values that are returned from these functions are not the same as
the coordinates of the window.

For example, I have added a section of code to the tool so the user can
input an x and y coordinates (british national grid) to create a point
(uses the CreatePoint() function). However the point created is not at
the coordinates entered i.e. if coordinates entered are x = 457980, y =
263570 the created point comes out as x = 400,000 , y = 4,470,000

Any help would be much appreciated.

RE: MI-L Labeling Difficulties

2004-12-03 Thread Woody Woodruff
Are you concerned with a screen display or a plotted display?

If screen display, I use Zoom layering. When at a large zoom, labels show
only for the major thoroughfares, as zooms decrease, labels are visible for
collectors, and at a close levels, local streets. In US we have function
class codes to determining these levels, so its an easy SQL to separate the
levels, and add them back in. Each level, though from the same source table,
is its own subset, and layered to facilitate the zoom layer settings. The
FunClass has an initial letter we don't care about, then 2 digits, the first
of the digits is a major class, the second digit a subset of that class, so
mid string function starts with the second character, and returns one
character (the second one).

Something like
Select * from MyAllRoadTable where funclass =Mid$(Funclass,2,1)=4 into
Locals
Select * from MyAllRoadTable where funclass =Mid$(Funclass,2,1)=3 into
Collectors
Select * from MyllRoadTable where funclass =Mid$(Funclass,2,1)=2 into
State_Hwys

Then add these three back into layer control, set the zoom label ranges.

In addition, you can style override these subsets, or thematically map them
to have line styles corresponding to these levels.

In your particular case, you may not be able to query the data, and generate
these subsets. However, you could still create several separate label
tables, as opposed to one, and the labels could still be zoom layered.

If its a plotted display, you will have to either print on larger paper, or
label only the majors, with detail maps for different districts, etc. There
is no way around hitting the wall when it comes readable font size,
geographic extant and plot size.

Hello,

I am trying to label the streets of Sydney in a third party software
that doesn't have any layer control features, I therefore need to create
a set of labels stored in a separate .tab file, the problem is that
Sydney is quite large and MapInfo's auto generate label functions make
the labels far too big to be practable - even font size 1 is way too
big. Also to make the labels of smaller areas so that they fit and then
append them together later would take forever. Anyone got some ideas?

Hi Nicolas,

I think you should look at the Run Command option which lets you build a string
and then run the string afterwards

Dim szCmdStr, szTab, szCond As String

szTab  = TableInfo(1, TAB_INFO_NAME)
szCmdStr = "Select * From " & szTab

If then
'**Please note that you now need to add the quotationmarks explicitly
   szCond = "LASTNAME = " & chr$(34) & "MØLLER" & chr$(34)
end if
If then
   If szCond = "" Then
'**Please note that you now need to add the quotationmarks explicitly
  szCond = "FIRSTNAME = " & chr$(34) & "PETER" & chr$(34)
   else
'**Please note that you now need to add the quotationmarks explicitly
  szCond = szCond & "AND FIRSTNAME = " & chr$(34) & "PETER" & chr$(34)

MI-L update column with sequential numbers

2004-12-03 Thread Tom Thomson
I have a layer of taxlot polygons with names and addresses. I have another
layer of GPSed water meter locations. The water company cannot export the
address list from their billing software so that I can join the two layers.
So my thought was to create a new column in the taxlot layer and update the
column with sequential numbers to use as an identifier. Then we could print
the map with the taxlot ID number and go from there. However, I cannot find
out how this is done. I tried the archives but cannot seem to find the right
wording to get the info from.

My ultimate goal would be to have the GPS coordinates for the meter appended
to the taxlot.

Thanks in advance for any help.tom
