RE: MI-L Linking MapInfo polygons to an Access database
I find this a useful jumping off point too. I am looking at developing a database, and sharing it with about 15 other people in different organisations who are involved in the project, most of whom have no GIS expertise. One option is to put it on our web page, and publish maps, or alternatively to go to much more effort with mapextreme and set up a site that enables the user design their own maps, queries etc. But does it have to be web based? I'm wondering however if there is a non-web option, that enables users to access the database that I have built. How could this be distributed? I don't want each user to have to put the entire database on their PC, the concept on dialling in to our server seems more sensible. Instead of a web based publishing effort, could something be set up where they are able to dial in, and then access the database using ProViewer, with a menu customised by mapbasic? Can this all be done using MI, Proviewer, mapbasic programming, and a telephone line? I could give my 15 partners a customised ProViewer, and they can dial in and view and query the database using established templates. I came across Virtual Private Networks (VPN) before, which might be what I'm looking for. This might seem like an obscure approach when html solutions are the way of the future, but I'm trying to match a project with the most readily available skills. The nice thing about MapLinker, I think, is that it is available in the MapX version for end users not familiar with MapInfo, and in this case works out a lot cheaper than buying lots of MI Pro copies and training users. Of course third party software is the easiest way of producing such links. However I though I'd mention that the DDE conversations that I mentioned a while ago can quite easily be held in either direction between MapInfo and Access, although I have not done this as its not necessary for our needs. It is also worth noting that Word, Excel, Outlook and pretty much any Office Application can accept a DDE conversation thus making it quite possible to link to text documents, pictures, send e-mail etc. I'm not trying to step on anyones toes, just letting people know what options there are because this is a really useful function. There is some third party software that does this linking for you, and as well as linking to access it allows links to other programs (word, excel etc, as well as jpgs and other file types). However, and more importantly, it also lets you link back the other way, so that you can have a record open in access and link back to the object in MapInfo, thus making it much more versatile than the code that Justin Elzik has developed. The third party software he mentioned looking into is the same as the one I'm talking about, and is called MapLinker (by Exa-min, in Brisbane). However, it is not so expensive and it really depends on what you want to get out of it. MapLinker also has another advantage, in that it allows you to catalogue data and avoids you needing to use workspaces, so has multiple uses.
