RE: MI-L It's Friday! - Survey Response
The way I see it is: It is consuming way too much of my time to clear all these responses. I feel that it is no harm to have one off topic posting but all the complaining is creating exactly what is being complained about. So my request is that we get back on topic. Geez, lighten up! What is this, ArcView-L? We need to learn to understand each other and laugh at ourselves just a little bit, no? This has always been the best GIS list and Bill T. the best steward, and I'd hate to see it change. Certainly we've learned by now what "Friday" in the subject line means, and certainly that is a simple enough convention for filtering. *** Steve Lackow RPM Consulting ESRI Wonk & Manager, Atlas GIS 17130 Devonshire St, Ste 205 Northridge CA 91325 Phone 818-831-7607 Fax 818-831-9078 http://rpmconsulting.com *** Bagwell, Ross wrote: Just one caution... I suppose we could ask a joke mailing list if it's okay to discuss GIS, or whatever else we desire, in their group. I read or subscribe to a number of SPECIALIZED usenet newsgroups and mailing lists to learn about specific topics. To cut out the extraneous stuff, even though it is all part of life. Therefore, to have these groups filled with off topic stuff is getting us right back to one big, general, life group. Does your local library segregate the books on the shelves or do you have to wade through a pile of all the books to get to the one you went there for? And why are just jokes okay? Why not business, philosphy, medicine, sports, sex, travel, recreation, religion, hobbies, literature, etc.? They all make someone feel good and provide relief from our workday. I propose we add to this list: sunday, or your religion's holy day, post religious topics on monday - sports and hobbies tuesday - philosophy and psychology wednesday - business and money thursday - travel and sightseeing friday - jokes and humor saturday - date night for some, so sexual and erotic matters. (Bill, you are going to have to allow posting of binaries, I'm afraid.) guess there's no time for mapinfo afterall. Since the group's name is "mapinfo-l", not "GIS-info", I feel even a general GIS question is already on the edge of acceptable. It's clear I agree with Ross. - List hosting provided by Directions Magazine | www.directionsmag.com | To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Message number: 5291

I, for one, do not like receiving all of the jokes, chain letters, virus emails, etc. that now plague the Internet (the latest study I read said that somewhere around 40% or more of the email is junk - jokes, advertisements, chains, etc.). I load the anti-banner, anti-spam, etc. software and utilize the functionality of various programs that include ways to weed out such email. I find it just fills the inbox and takes up space on the server. If I want to receive that stuff, I'll sign up for it. I signed up to this forum because of the capability to reach a worldwide scope of knowledge and resource in regards to MapInfo and the various questions that we have... I find it very helpful and save some of the threads that apply to my own mapping needs. However, this whole "Friday" thing worries me... some of you will criticize me and say "lighten up" and that's ok. I have a thick skin and can take it. But honestly... the other day we had several emails back and forth of people asking about an older "Friday" email that they wanted the joke to give to someone else, and frankly, I don't think that is what this forum was all about. Is this going to get worse, where we can expect more and more "Friday" emails on friday, and then more and more questions on an old joke (instead of using the archives or asking the person who sent it)... to the point where, once again, my inbox is filling up with useless email? Besides, this joke is one of the many that circulate the Internet every so often... someone fills in a different University name or whatever... I personally have seen it three times now. So what does everyone else think? -Ross E. Chem Exam At Duke University, there were four sophomores taking Organic Chemistry. They were doing so well on all the quizzes, midterms and labs, etc., that each had an A so far for the semester. These four friends were so confident that the weekend before finals, they decided to go up to the University of Virginia and party with some friends there. They had a great time, but after all the hearty partying, they slept all day Sunday and didn't make it back to Duke until early Monday morning. Rather than taking the final then, they decided to find their professor after the final and explain to him why they missed it. They explained that they had gone to UVA for the weekend with the plan to come back in time to study, but, unfortunately, they had a flat tire on the way back, didn't have a spare, and couldn't get help for a long time. As a result, they missed the final. The professor thought it over and then agreed they could make up the final the following day. The guys were elated and relieved. They studied that night and went in the next day at the time the professor had told them. He placed them in separate rooms and handed each of them a test booklet, and told them to begin. They looked at the first problem, worth five points. It was something simple about free radical formation. Cool, they thought at the same time, each one in his separate room, this is going to be easy. Each finished the problem and then turned the page. On the second page was written: For 95 points: Which tire? John D.
