Re: [mapserver-users] Accessing mapserver from Flash Script

2009-12-21 Thread Ken S. Elvehjem
Bob, P Kishor, and Dan Little,

Thanks for the responses.

After reading the article at blooberry.com, it looks like other stuff needs to
be fixed also.

Is there some other means of accessing the mapserver? some of the
documentation seemed to indicate that I should be generating a request in some
kind of XML request.

I'd sure like to know if anyone is using Flash to actually access a mapserver.

Sincerely,

Ken

  Ken,

You could try to enocde the entire URL from stage one. Read more here:

  http://www.blooberry.com/indexdot/html/topics/urlencoding.htm

Using the converter near the bottom of the page, your URL goes from :

http://mapserver.soilsampling.com/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=c:\ms4w\Apache\htdocs\ND\ND_griggs-wms.map&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=NAIP2006&STYLES=&SRS=EPSG:4269&BBOX=554649,5245688,557949,5248988&WIDTH=1650&HEIGHT=1650&FORMAT=image/jpeg

  to

http://mapserver.soilsampling.com/cgi-bin/mapserv.exe?map=c:%5Cms4w%5CApache%5Chtdocs%5CND%5CND_griggs-wms.map&SERVICE=WMS&VERSION=1.1.1&REQUEST=GetMap&LAYERS=NAIP2006&STYLES=&SRS=EPSG:4269&BBOX=554649%2C5245688%2C557949%2C5248988&WIDTH=1650&HEIGHT=1650&FORMAT=image/jpeg

You can even escape the "&" characters if needed using the same syntax.

TC,

Yes, I don't have any control over that. Yet. The I-35 symbol and text are
not issues, in this case, because they are closer to the center of the picture.

My center coordinates are selected from a list of land survey plots... in the
north central US, the land was surveyed in plots of 1 square mile -- 640 acres.
The bulk of the individual fields in which I am interested (like 99.1%) will
fall within the boundaries of that square mile, or section, to use the survey
word.

However, the maps we create are used for navigating to the "correct" field by
field crews, and we have found that the operator in the office that creates
them is much happier (and more accurate) if they can see a margin around that
section for context & landmarks. We try to have approximately 1/2 mile all the
way around.

This operator draws in boundaries (using software I've written for the purpose)
to mark the fields of interest, some of which extend past the edge of the
section. Then, so as to have a larger picture in the field, the picture is
cropped some to get rid of some of the border.

Unfortunately, some of the roads begin at the section boundary and extend
toward the edge of the picture, and those labels are then placed somewhere
between the edge of the section and the edge of the picture, and these may end
up missing from the final product.

The operator can put in those labels manually, but the whole point was to
automate the process...

Sincerely,

Ken

  Hi,

I'm using a program generated query to fetch a transparent PNG file of
about 1600 pixels square from a streets & roads database in Iowa. A sample URL
is pasted below my sig lines.

It works great, but the problem is that the features from a different
layer (aerial photo) in which I am interested will usually be within the center
1/4 of the picture, and it usually gets cropped to center on that feature,
which blows away some of my labels.

Is there any way to force the labels closer to the (x,y) center of the
returned PNG file while still following along whatever feature they are
identifying?

That is to say, if there is one on a north/south road, we'd like it to be
nearer the Y center of the pic, and if one is on an east/west road, then have
it be closer to the X center of the picture.

Any magic we can invoke to do *that*

Ken,

There is no stock mechanism for this, but you could write a custom
mapscript application to pick this information out of the map file and
return it as a web service. I would note though that MapServer does not
normally provide access to stuff like file bounds to mapscript so there
it is hard to provide very much information using mapscript itself.

You could try setting up the dataset as WCS accessable, and then the
WCS DescribeCoverage method would provide a variety of information about
the file.

Ken,

I'm not aware of anyone doing anything quite like this. gdalinfo isn't
setup to be used as a cgi, and doesn't return things html encoded or
with a content-type header. And MapServer does not have an equivelent
functionality.

But, in theory, you could write a little gdalinfo script in
php/perl/python

that would execute gdalinfo on a passed argument filename and then return
the result with a proper "Content-type: text/plain" header.

Re: [mapserver-users] upload/stream data from GPS unit?

2008-03-27 Thread Ken S. Elvehjem
Bill,

Am still not particularly proficient with MapServer to help with the "how" --
instead, I'm curious about the "how near" real time. Within 10 seconds or 10
minutes?

Also, how much data? if it is just x,y,z info could you have the machine
that's reading the GPS append points to a (say) ShapeFile, and send the whole
thing? This would work if your ShapeFile held the last couple of hundred
points; Then it might be possible to display those points + another layer that
would have an accumulation of the points, and a process on the server that
would append the newest points to the accumulated file.

I'll confess to being more than a little curious about what you are doing...

Ken

Bill,

There are probably many solutions available depending on the various
technical components that you might have in the solution. One possible
solution might be something along these lines:

1) stream data to some service that you probably have to build
2) have said service load the points into a postgres/postgis database
3) create a mapfile with a LAYER to disply the data from postgis
4) Use a client like OpenLayers to render you map from mapserver
5) add a timer event to refresh your map every X secs

  Ken -

If you really have a free choice, use the system you know best.

For most applications, on the same hardware, it's my opinion (having run
MapServer on both Windows and Linux for a long time) that your ability to
configure, manage, and maintain your server is far more important. You do need
to be sure that all supporting libraries (such as MrSID support) are available
on your OS of choice, too. If you can't get MapServer to work properly, it
makes little difference how well it might have run had you gotten it working!
If you have substantially more experience with one OS or the other then I would
highly recommend you stick with that OS unless you find other significant other
reasons to switch.

After having established a Mapserver with MS4W on my own computer, which
works exceedingly well thanks to help from the list, the time has come to start
housing the MrSid files somewhere else.

We have located several web hosting services who want to help us. One in
particular asked "Do you want it on a Windows or Linux box???"

Now, I realize that flame wars have been started over such innocent
questions, and I regret having to ask it in this way, but having only a limited
contact with Linux *myself* this is really the only efficient way to find out.

I'd especially appreciate hearing from someone who has tried it both ways,
and can relate their experiences in a short, comparative narrative.

  Sincerely,

  Ken

[mapserver-users] temp files

2008-02-20 Thread Ken S. Elvehjem
Hi,

2 items-- may be interconnected???

I recently set up a WMS mapserver using MS4W. It works better than I have any
right to expect, what with it being my first real attempt; would have never
gotten that far without help from the list.

During the setup phase, I was having the raster data output as PNG files.
Which looked awful. Which is because I was used to seeing these aerial photos
as 24 bit jpeg files. (the documentation seems to indicate an 8-bit limit on
png colors...?)

They would dutifully create a temporary png file in the tmp folder.

Then, I changed my map file and my request URL to indicate jpeg files, which
works great. My observation is that my mapserver is no longer storing
temporary files.

This also is good news -- because I don't have to delete them -- but I am a
little worried that they are building up somewhere else -- like in the cooling
fins on my cpu, or in my power supply ;>)

Seriously, can someone explain about the apparent 8-bit limit in png files (is
it true, will it change, etc.) and suggest where the temp files are going?
Below is the "WEB" section of my .map file...

WEB
  TEMPLATE "SD.html"
IMAGEPATH "C:\ms4w\Apache\htdocs\tmp/" # have verified the
correct path!
   IMAGEURL "/tmp/"# and it
saved png tmp files to it

   METADATA
"wms_title" "WMS McCOOK"
"wms_onlineresource"  "http://206.183.188.202/cgi-bin/mapserv?";
        "wms_srs" "EPSG:26914 EPSG:26914"
   END
  END

[mapserver-users] Simple thanks (re: Simple MrSID Map File)

2008-02-13 Thread Ken S. Elvehjem
Just a note to everyone to say how much I appreciate the availability of this
list.

A special thanks to Brent Fraser for his help... Was feeling like I had
wandered into *Looking Glass Land*... But Now... my MrSID files are served up
in a WMS server on my office machine... and I know I couldn't have done it
without his comments, suggestions, and encouragement.

Re: [mapserver-users] Simple MrSid map file

2008-02-10 Thread Ken S. Elvehjem

Brent,

Thanks for the response. I appreciate the *watch* items you included! and I
think that I have all that info available.

I think my main problem is that I cannot separate out what is *nice* in a
mapfile from what is *necessary* ... most of the examples I have been able
to find have multiple layers, labels, scales etc. that I may use one day,
but I have to comment them out because they don't apply. It's why I'm
trying to find the world's simplest mapfile that works for displaying raster
data... MrSID data if possible. A sort of a "Hello Raster (world)" Mapfile
for Mapserver.

I have been reading more about mapfiles @
http://umn.mapserver.ch/index_en.php . This has an astonishing amount of
information and is well organized.

Perhaps I should wait until I am over this bad head cold before I plow back
into it ;>)

Sincerest thanks!

Ken

Ken,

I don't use MrSID, but here are some general things to look at:

1. Does your MrSID file have geo-referencing and coordinate system
definition information with it? Use GDAL's "gdalinfo" to find out.

2. Do your EXTENTS (with the related PROJECTION and UNITS) in the map file
actually cover/intersect the MrSID file?

3. Check your DATA value in the map file's LAYER. Is the path correct?
Is Mapserver able to access the file?

Hi,

I am trying to make ms4w show me a MrSid file. Eventually, I would like
to be able to send center coordinates and dimensions and have it return a
JPG.

For now, however, I have apparently gotten into a tail chasing game -- no
matter what I try, I seem to need to do something else first.

I'm hoping that someone who uses MrSid files w/ ms4w could send me a
"simplest" map file and html code that will allow me to display MrSid
data

over the web. This will give me a "solid place to stand" (or a safe
position for a retreat) and I can add components and code from there.

My MrSid file happens to be the NAIP file for McCook Co, SD. The file
structure is like this: SD/mccook/. files here.

Sincerely,

Ken
