One other idea would be to use a style at the label level with blank text,
something like:
CLASS # no class-level style
TEXT “ “ # blank space
LABEL
POSITION CC
STYLE
SYMBOL …your pixmap…
…
END
END
END
I think this could work although you might have to fiddle with it a bit.
