Please check back with the devs before making too bold a statement -
this thing works, but e.g. not equally well on all platforms. FWICT,
there are at least these gaps still:

 - no BT support on Mac yet
 - no Android market account for TDF yet, via which we could publish
   this
 - speaker notes feature not up to snuff quite yet, pondering to hide
   that
 - and it didn't get much test coverage yet

Hi Ron,

They look great, and will no doubt be very useful. The many variations
made me think generating such versions could be somehow automated in the
future on the website. Thank you for your work. I find it specially
useful to have direct links to PDF renders.

One important detail I noticed in my printing tests, the LibreOffice
logo on the left seems to be low-resolution, which results in poor print
quality. Can this be fixed? Most people may not notice but it's low
enough resolution that it looks blurry even on the screen when I open
the PDF. I am using evince 3.4.0 in Trisquel if that matters, a Windows
version is available here: http://www.pdfreaders.org.

I would do this correction myself on a single document but there are 16
variations of it that would need to be
corrected/re-generated/re-uploaded, and I will most surely forget some
detail (fonts, etc.) that will make it look different. I will be looking
into translating some of these so if this isn't fixed by release I will
take the time to do it. Mentioning any extra fonts used (if any) and
linking to the high-resolution version of the logos on that same page
may be useful for translators too in the near future. I love the
instructions on the back too :)

I believe there was some recent discussion about measuring the # of
downloads for another document and the difficulty of doing this on the
Wiki. It will be important to measure how many downloads there are for
these variations of the PDF, so in the future we can focus on those that
are most used / drop those that aren't at all. What do you think?

Cheers,

Fabian

Perhaps an alternative would be to use an .svg vector based file

[libreoffice-marketing] Re: LibreOffice - LEARNTEC 2013

2013-01-21 Thread Marc Paré

Hi Stelios,

No problem. Many thanks for doing this! It is nice to get your support
at the conference and going as far as producing a leaflet and
distributing it. We are the ones who should be thanking you!

BTW ... for the next time, if you give us enough time of the upcoming
dates, we would normally try to organize either a lecture or also try to
get/share a booth at these things.

IMO, this is an important conference, as it looks like educational IT
people will be there along with many "decision-makers" in education.
This is where LibreOffice should be to stand out as an office suite of
choice for education and institutions.

Also, re: the logo. If you allow a little more time next time, we could
perhaps "sanction" the leaflet and you could then put the logo with the
TDF/LibreOffice subline. This would have to be Charles and Italo's decision.

Have you announced this on the DE mailing list? I don't think we have
any DE language materials that we could provide you with, but maybe the
DE community would have some additional marketing materials that they
could send you if you wish.

There may be also some of our DE members who could drop by to help with
distributing the leaflets at your booth if this is permissible.

Thanks again for doing this. BTW ... I have added the event to our
wiki/website calendar. Could I put you as the contact person and add
your email address on the calendar? Let me know if there is a problem
with the calendar posting.[1]

Cheers,

Marc

So just to keep the list complete and for clarity, it now looks like
this:

First:
* blog about an interesting "LibreOffice" article/event/etc on the
Marketing Blog (this will act as our "main teaser") linking to the
original website

Second: post a message on the following linking to our official
Marketing Blog. But these posts would have to be considerably shorter in
content to the blog teaser.

** Our official Facebook group
** Our official Google + community
** The official TDF Google + page
** The Libreoffice subreddit
** The Open Source subreddit
** Our official TDF Twitter: @tdforg
** Our official LibreOffice Twitter: @libreoffice

Unless there are others we can work out the process or just test-try it
to see if it suits our needs.

The more I think about it, the less I think the marketing blog is the
right place. Let me explain my perception. blog.documentfoundation.org
is very well followed and it's there where people get their news. The
second place they get the news is through our twitter and identi.ca
accounts, Facebook and Google +. Then comes the Reddit galaxy.

I'm afraid that our marketing blog is not known by many.

May I thus suggest two approaches:
- we post more on the blog.documentfoundation.org
- we handle the marketing blog as a more "specific" and focused blog,
and handle our social networks in an autonomous way, that is, without
the marketing blog being some sort of central point.

What do you think?

Charles.

Our blog as well as the doc team's blog are tied to our planet[1]. This
is where we are read. I don't believe we would be on anyone's reading
list unless we were of particular marketing interest to them. I don't
believe that we would ever be of any peculiar interest for long to the
general public.

It all depends on one's strategic perception of the marketing team blog.
Is is a place where we use to disseminate materials of importance to the
popularity/growth of the project (media articles, 3rd party materials
such as Klaibson's tables announced on this list etc.) OR is the blog to
be used of information dealing with primarily of LibreOffice marketing
specifics.

My initial question, was, as a marketing team, what to do with the
information we receive periodically from the media and 3rd party news of
LibreOffice compatible products? If as a team, we decide to post these
on a marketing-team-run blog, would this be desirable?

Quite honestly, any individual could put up their own blog, do the same
and apply to join our planet. But, do we want to take this up as a
marketing task ourselves? Is this something that we could use
strategically? We used to keep track of it on our wiki, which was useful
at the time it was being done. Do we want to resurrect it in another
more strategic form?

Should we then run two marketing blogs? One for marketing specifics and
another for dissemination of materials for the public? Would this be
strategically interesting for us to do?

Cheers,

Marc

[1] http://planet.documentfoundation.org/

If we can decide on the process, I can take care of managing it on our
list for the events/articles that are worth blogging/talking about. We
just need to decide on which blog site to announce the events/articles.

I believe we have some marketing members on this list who would be
interested in helping out with the dissemination of our events and
articles on our different channels.

Cheers,

Marc

I would not blog about LEARNTEC on TDF blog, because TDF is not involved
in the exhibition. Stelios is from a Greek company which is supporting
LibreOffice, but is not yet contributing to the project and therefore is
not a TDF member. I suggest to use the marketing blog for this kind of

For me, in the USA, it would be great to have as many "good" video
demonstrations using LibreOffice and "how to" videos as well for LO, in
English though. Be nice to have a good sorted listing of the available
videos with a paragraph about what it demos or deals with. That good
sorted listing, and more up-to-date videos for the 3.6+ line is the key,
though.

best,

Charles.

Thanks Fabian. Yes the logo is low-resolution. There are some
higher-resolution versions on the wiki and I'll work on replacing them
and uploading the new files. The only problem with the SVG that Daniel
suggested is that it has a purpleish background. I'm not a graphic
designer, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to use it. If someone who
knows more about it can create a transparent version, I'll be happy to
use it.

I agree that we may not need all 16 variations, we just need some info
on which are the most used. If you have any suggestions about which ones
to focus on, we can discuss it. Liberation Sans is the only font used in
the 4.0 cards. It is installed by default when you install LibreOffice.
I'm glad you're interested in translating the cards. It will be a
benefit to many of our users.

Thanks,
Ron

We will produce the video at FOSDEM in Brussels, so we will make it of
the length most appropriate for your needs.

Great! It must be a really nice gift for our community.
Hmm... 5 minutes enough I think because our miniconf will have too
tight scheduled track (little sad, but it will be just first step).

And if possible, could you give me a transcript of the video with
itself?
It will help us to create Japanese caption on it.

Thanks,

[libreoffice-marketing] Marketing materials for TV

2013-01-21 Thread Warren
Good evening my fellow freedom fighters (well open-document fighters...)

I would like to announce some great news, that ossmalta is going to be featured
on a local tech show called gadgets, where we will be presenting Linux & OSS on
the national public broadcasting services.

i would like to know of any marketing material or ideas from fellow members of
best describing Libreoffice in short time frame and in a simplistic method to
be understood by most.

Videos, logos, etc may be used. i also would like to ask permission from the
TDF and of course those who made the works if i may publicly broadcast them.

[libreoffice-marketing] Re: [BLOGGING EVENT] LibreOffice - LEARNTEC 2013

the blog planet. Make sure to mention the LEARNTEC website as well as

distributed.

I would not blog about LEARNTEC on TDF blog, because TDF is not involved
in the exhibition. Stelios is from a Greek company which is supporting
LibreOffice, but is not yet contributing to the project and therefore is
not a TDF member. I suggest to use the marketing blog for this kind of
events.

We have not decided about the use of the Marketing blog. Charles has
suggested that we only use the marketing blog for specific marketing
items. This then leaves us no blog to use for such "blogable" items.
Should we open a new blog for the dissemination of items such as this?

I believe what Stelios has suggested is that they would like to show
their support of LibreOffice by distributing leaflets at Learntec, We
should find some way to acknowledge this kind support, and we could do
this by a blog item.

Perhaps Stelios' company would then like to join our ranks of supporting
entities on our TDF supporter page?

Cheers,

Marc
