It's Bitcoin though, not BitCoins (no uppercase C) ;)

[libreoffice-marketing] Salon du Logiciel Libre du Québec 2013

2013-08-06 Thread Fabian Rodriguez
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Hi,

I am part of the committee organizing the Salon du Logiciel Libre du
Québec 2013, to be held in Quebec province Dec. 11 2013. I am wearing
the APELL member hat here (http://www.apell-quebec.ca).

Anyone interested in following development in the organization can
keep an eye on http://www.s2lq.com/ (not updated for now).

This will be an event organized around government organizations and
local business providing free software services, as well as community
organizations. Since this will be happening in Quebec province, the
organization will be looking primarily for francophone speakers,
although translation services will be available.

This is only to put this event in your radars, I'd appreciate any
ideas, requirements or candidates to have LibreOffice properly
represented (in particular mass migrations). We already have contacts
at the French government but of course confirming such contacts.

If there are any questions I can also be reached as usual either
off-list or here.

Cheers,

Fabian

I'd like to remind anyone using / uploading videos of the importance
of **also** making them available on archive.org:

* It converts the videos to many more formats than the original, all
available for legal, direct downloading

* There is also support for subtitles

* It improves the availability and archival of content (compared to
restrictions on other services)

* Archive.org is run by a non-profit (The Internet Archive) and as
such is not as strongly influenced by profit-oriented influencing:
https://archive.org/about/

Here is an example of a video with subtitles I recently uploaded:
https://archive.org/details/WhatIsBitcoin

The uploading procedure at archive.org has changed a lot and is easier
now.

When opening a dedicated account for this, any bookmarks will be
available on an RSS feed, effectively generating the equivalent of an
RSS video channel. Here is an example:
https://archive.org/bookmarks/MagicFab (notice the RSS icon)

I can help with this, but the videos need to be available in source
format, hosted somewhere for me to upload (no downloading from
YouTube) and have complete, clear metadata (authors, description,
licence, contact information).

Cheers,

Fabian

The speculation around this is enough to not use or favor use of such
SaaS (software as service) offerings, and in general any non-free
software. You can't be sure this won't disappear and recent history
with Google products that support free open standards gives every
indication it will.

Campaigning for ODF file formats while leaving aside considerations
for software freedom is not coherent, IMO, and that is why such a
campaign without an additional focus on software freedom and web
autonomy can't work.

- From http://pdfreaders.org/:
"Other proprietary alternatives to Adobe's PDF reader also exist, but
like it, their internal working is a trade secret and these programs
do not respect your right to control your own privacy and data."

In fact I am a bit surprised that there aren't malware offerings yet
that include ODF reading "capabilities". That will be an interesting
vector of attack when it's implemented.

> FSF supports ODF aswell as supporting LibreOffice and TDF. They
> are separate issues though. Part of their campaign for ODF

I couldn't find references to what you imply.

The FSF campaign focuses on free software supports ODF and
specifically encourages to reject *any* documents created with
Microsoft and iWork:
https://www.fsf.org/campaigns/opendocument
https://www.fsf.org/campaigns/opendocument/reject

No mention anywhere of any advantages of ODF being supported by
"popular" non-free software, whatever that may mean.

Perhaps the only valid reason to use such SaaS and non-free software
may be when transitioning to free software, IMO.

If LibreOffice marketing can find an angle to that, it may be possible
to remain coherent while making a valid argument about why resources
are dedicated to non-free platforms at all.

Cheers,

Fabian

It makes LibreOffice sound like any of the malware/trickware that

White paper / use cases from the commercial support companies behind
GNU/Linux and those listed for LibreOffice (where is that list again)
should help.

Not every company thinks about writing those and making them public, though.

This is a really important announcement and as such I wanted to make
sure everybody got these details right.

I downloaded and tried the Linex ISO image which is the basis for this
deployment. The current version dates from just February.

It's based on Debian 7 (which is about to be released this weekend),
and as such it features LibreOffice 3.5.4:

I hope that's useful if/when this deployment is mentioned in the TDF /
LibreOffice material.

In many cases this doesn't matter, the people deciding are paid not to
choose free open source software (which includes LibreOffice).

Here in Quebec we have 4 Microsoft lobbyists at the government making
sure their software gets chosen in procurement. They also have a full
time "open source advocate" that goes to each and every programmer group
meeting and sits at their venues to provide free advice and Microsoft
development tools.

You will need to sit in the same place and be as present as those
companies like Microsoft with strong economical incentive to keep
Microsoft Office or other solutions in other to displace/replace them.

Of course grassroots advocacy is not without any effects.

In case that's not clear, a lot of money is involved, and lots of key
people are paid not to even examine the options to MS Office. That
remains the main obstacle in many places.

Cheers,

F.

Hi,

I often participate in public forums, social networks and other
websites to answer questions and inform people about LibreOffice.

This is an example of such participation in French.

Agent Solo is a site for freelancers, they have a questions & answers
section. In this example someone asked how to get MS Office for cheap.

The site originated in Quebec province in Canada although it's been
evovling toward English users - perhaps more - lately.

Several people mentioned LibreOffice, even OpenOffice:
http://www.agentsolo.com/ca/fr/ntwk/est-ce-que-quelqu-un-sait-si-l-on-peux-se-procurer-la-suite-office-a-un-prix-raisonnable-pour-les

If you see opportunities like this in French or Spanish, I would be
personally interested in intervening. Similar opportunities in English
or other languages could also be posted here.

If you speak French I encourage you to go to the above thread and
participate too if you have time and deem it appropriate.

[libreoffice-marketing] Regarding video / ISO archives

2013-02-11 Thread Fabian Rodriguez
Hi

I noticed that archive.org recently updated their upload interface. It
is easier to use now.

I've mentioned archive.org previously as a very good place to upload
videos, specially as they transcode to other formats and provide clean,
direct access to all files for direct download without restrictions (as
opposed to YouTube for example).

It just occurred to me it can also be used for ISO images.

Let me be very clear, I am not saying *ONLY* use archive.org. Use
whatever you want to upload videos to, as long as a copy sits somewhere
on archive.org (legally, of course).

Perhaps it should be mentioned in the wiki as a place we suggest
uploading to, with a "LibreOffice" common tag.

Cheers,

Fabian

At least in Canada most libraries won't take such donations unless

Interesting - I too used to shave a few minutes by burning while doing
other stuff. Unfortunately I would most likely have to prepare an
"urgent batch" for last-minute events more often than not, so I would
end up spending a lot of time dedicated to printing/sticking/burning
DVDs. I realize printing to stickers + sticking also takes more time.

I think in terms of very large runs for my next burns because I intend
not to use version -specific stickers/designs, so my intention was to
order for example 400 and have them ready to burn-on-demand (as opposed
to have them burnt by the service). I also would want to ship individual
DVDs, and I'd want to have something useful printed on the DVD case
printout.

Thanks for your comments, it's of course very tempting to have my own
DIY setup :D

Hi Ron,

They look great, and will no doubt be very useful. The many variations
made me think generating such versions could be somehow automated in the
future on the website. Thank you for your work. I find it specially
useful to have direct links to PDF renders.

One important detail I noticed in my printing tests, the LibreOffice
logo on the left seems to be low-resolution, which results in poor print
quality. Can this be fixed? Most people may not notice but it's low
enough resolution that it looks blurry even on the screen when I open
the PDF. I am using evince 3.4.0 in Trisquel if that matters, a Windows
version is available here: http://www.pdfreaders.org.

I would do this correction myself on a single document but there are 16
variations of it that would need to be
corrected/re-generated/re-uploaded, and I will most surely forget some
detail (fonts, etc.) that will make it look different. I will be looking
into translating some of these so if this isn't fixed by release I will
take the time to do it. Mentioning any extra fonts used (if any) and
linking to the high-resolution version of the logos on that same page
may be useful for translators too in the near future. I love the
instructions on the back too :)

I believe there was some recent discussion about measuring the # of
downloads for another document and the difficulty of doing this on the
Wiki. It will be important to measure how many downloads there are for
these variations of the PDF, so in the future we can focus on those that
are most used / drop those that aren't at all. What do you think?

Cheers,

Fabian

It may seem like a "shallow implementation" but in my experience in
teaching and observing the kids, this is a really BIG feature that will
greatly influence their choice of suites -- as incredible as it sounds
to some of us.

That's interesting, perhaps the rationale or a link to the initial
discussion/decision should be in the release notes.

The release notes have an otherwise impressive list of
fixes/enhancements and new features:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/4.0

I personas suppor took 90% of that page I'd be worried ;)

You can very much open any PDF in LibreOffice Draw and edit it / export
again to PDF.

More importantly (and efficiently), LibO Writer can export to PDF
*including the source ODT* in the the PDF for re-editing. I don't
believe it's enabled by default though:
http://pix.toile-libre.org/upload/original/1356970061.png

IMO including the source of the document in the PDF file is better.

AFAIK Word 2013 will convert, then let you edit the converted document
(a current feature in LibO Draw):

Yes, I was hired under my (freelance) consulting company
(http://www.legoutdulibre.com).

The original job was to act as an onsite technician to connect the
equipment and train staff with MS Windows/Office.

I developped this into a full free/open source training + installation
project over the course of the last 1.5 yr. or so.

> was this for and aid group? Photos?

This was financed by a third party, the contract was done by me for
MicroRecycCoop (http://microrecyc.wordpress.com/ ). They send other
people to Africa too for similar projects. The end-customer is the
Clercs de St-Viateur who have several (many!) buildings and schools
there. Anyone wanting more details can contact MRC directly.

I am working with them to offer local workshops and to have the next
shipment use LTSP (Linux Terminal Server Project) instead of stand-alone
installs. A few ideas that have come up include giving away recycled
servers for students, or perhaps RaspberryPis... Lots to do.

>
> It's always nice to hear of someone helping out in areas where help is
needed and where LibreOffice will make a difference.

The interesting single fact is everyone I introduced free software to
(and that mostly started with LibO which everyone needs/understands) had
very little hesitation to wipe out completely their PCs and / or MS
suite. Their mainly concern is why they didn't know about it before. I
had to convince some of them to take a "safer' approach in some cases so
LibO would be adopted gradually. In some cases I was lucky to witness
"brutal adoption" :)

Most students and teacher also have their own laptop (!) so that gave
them a lot of control over their learning experience.

> Big thanks for the groundbreaking work at MRC. This would look great as a
> blog article on
our blog planet -- even in French!

MRC already used Ubuntu, but the pressure from Microsoft to use only
Windows is heavy. At $6 per OEM XP license, it's hard to compete, even
being free. MRC is taking the "eco-friendly" approach in their recycling
business and place high the same values free software brings, so it was
an easy match. I just happened to show up in the right place at the
right time.

I'd encourage anyone with a nearby recycling/PC shop (particularly
small, neighborhood businesses) to engage in this conversation: what
software do they ship? Do they know about free, open source software?
LibreOffice? Do they know it can be heavily customized/adapated to their
local market? etc. Come back here if you have more questions :)

> Maybe some of your students will jump in and help out with a Haitian Créole
> translation of LibreOffice.

Very much so. I don't speak the language but I did bring some focus to
my stay to this important subject. The spelling aid is the most
important IMO right now, if that is well done many more people will use
LibO there. Then there's other similar resources that will get anyone
interested to translate and learn such workflows - Wikipedia in Creole
and OPenStreetMap documentation in creole.

I created the LibrePlanet Haiti group (LIbrePlanet are FSF communities /
groups) to keep track / expose these projects more and have a discussion
place, such projects are listed there:
http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Haiti#Traductions

One of the students there also translated my presentation on free open
source software to Creole and he succesfully co-presented a few times to
local staff/students.

Translating LibO presentations to Creole (and other languages) would be
an interesting first-step (in LibO marketing, specifically) to introduce
LibO but also to recruit devs/translators in any country where there
aren't any already.

Do we have such a presentation? I lack the time to research this but if
we have a standard "INtroducing Libo" presentation, I'd love to propose
it for translation there.

Cheers,

[libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice installed by default on recycled computers

Hi

I am happy to announce that all PCs recycled at MicroRecycCoop (MRC) in
Montreal have been shipping with LibreOffice for some months now:
http://microrecyc.wordpress.com/

A couple of weeks ago I came back from a trip to Haiti where my mandata
was to deliver + install a 50 PC lab and network, whil etraining local
staff + students. They had LibreOffice for Windows pre-installed on all
PCs, in addition to being dual-boot Ubuntu / Trisquel systems which
already included LibreOffice. This all started when I went into MRC's
office and starting talking to its owner about putting GNU/Linux and
LibO on their systems... :) After a year or so I am happy to see the
results!

The school I went to is part of a network of several buildings & schools
where I had the opportunity to have similar discussions and sometimes
leave copies of LibO and GNU/Linux live CDs.

I also copied / gave away ~60 copies of the installers during several
workshops there, it turned out great. I didn't know there is a spelling
dictionary for creole! That extension for LibreOffice and other
free-software related projects are listed here now:

Very interesting, impressive document, thanks for sharing!

A few comments:
* I see many mentions of stability, and indications of "limited" vs
"advanced" this or that. Without supporting references, it's not very
useful information.
* MS Office also does have an extensive list of "add-ins":
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/CD001020027.aspx
* And Outlook IMO does not belong on the list of "minor" features that
MS Office has and LibO doesn't.

I'll continue reviewing it and will make changes accordingly.

I mentioned groups should be used for this. Here's an example of a group
and how they contribute collectively to their own resources:

My mistake, I think I linked to the library. This should be it:

>

Quota is only calculated on attachments. Don't sync attachments and it
won't matter.

> Some questions:
>
> * can an account be shared with other people?

I suppose so, like any set of credentials. Why would you do that? What
problem do you want to address by sharing an account?

> * would people have access to the list through their own Zotero extension?

The lists/articles/groups are public on the website.

> * I imagine it would be possible to have the feed available on our
website pages ... I am just wondering how it would look with the
different categories. Could you put in fake articles in each category to
see what the feed would look like?

It's all available via RSS feeds. This would be the corresponding feed
for my LibreOffice articles:
https://api.zotero.org/users/986243/collections/WHBXSUDV/items/top

Several feeds could then be aggregated into a planet/other front ends.

> * maybe this is more than I was anticipating BUT I can definitely see
its usefulness as in a "LibreOffice Reference Library" where people
could browse for particular instances of help with LibreOffice (I think
this is what you had suggested in your last post)

I am discovering Zotero, it's not a "zero learning curve" experience but
it's easy enough given the possible uses. I am thinking everytime I
visit a bookstore and I see a LibreOffice magazine article or book I can
quickly add its reference for example. Then having a very precise book
list, from different countries/languages would be easy. I am using these
mobile applications:
http://l1bre.ca/l/tags.php/apps+android+zotero

> * can the list be backed up locally on a hardrive?

Yes, you can save all your data locally only or sync it to Zotero's
servers. You can sync your attachments to Zotero's servers (and pay more
for more space) or to your own Webdav server (only limited by your
setup), and you can export all the data in several formats for
local/remote backups.
>
> I can see perhaps making arrangements with Zotero giving LibreOffice an
account with storage space in exchange for highlighting their name on
the webpage where the list would be kept on our site.

I don't see the need for a particular arrangement knowing the space is
not a primary concern, and knowing the rather limited initial audience
for this. "The list" wouldn't be only one as this could generate several
categories and references ("news articles","books", etc.). But that's my
limited impression for now, I tend to focus on the raw data.

This will raise its profile on our website and create more of a "buzz"
for the product. We could still pull data from this form of reporting
for marketing purposes.
[...]

+1, although with a nuance concerning using Google tools. The tasks at
hand and the tools required should be two different decisions here.

I agree we need a better way to share such resources but most
importantly, to welcome and encourage people to keep an eye on such
references and gather+curate them. Using a tool like Zotero -
http://www.zotero.org - we could help preserve and curate such content
while making it available to press & scholars (and the general public
too), and inviting them to contribute without requiring a Google
account. This would be specially useful to people preparing proposals,
studies and research for LibreOffice.. while using LibreOffice + Zotero
:D I am no expert with Zotero, but I know a few. I personally favored
using bookmarking tools (ala Delicious) like Semantic Scuttle because
that's what I knew best, but I am learning about Zotero to use it as I
see more potential there.

Zotero "is free, open source reference management software to manage
bibliographic data and related research materials (such as PDFs).
Notable features include web browser integration, online syncing,
generation of in-text citations, footnotes and bibliographies, as well
as integration with the word processors Microsoft Word, LibreOffice,
OpenOffice.org Writer and NeoOffice. It is produced by the Center for
History and New Media of George Mason University (GMU)." (from
Wikipedia). It's also another way students / researchers in academia are
discovering / using LibreOffice, increasingly.

Regarding Semantic Scuttle, see
http://l1bre.ca/l/bookmarks.php/magicfab/libreoffice+press for an
example - add "+en" to the query for English bookmarks only. Both Zotero
and Semantic Scuttle - http://semanticscuttle.sourceforge.net/ - are
similar in the service they'd provide to what Italo Vignoli did at some
point with Evernote: http://www.evernote.com/pub/italovignoli/lofrench -
which requires an account there, I believe :( Zotero and Semantic
Scuttle are also free, open source software which can be implemented on
TDF's own servers for mutual benefits.

When you think about this kind of approach it is very consistent with
the TDF mission and goals. Yes, it requires more effort & time but we
need to aim for this in addition to the easy / quick solutions first. In
fact Semantic Scuttle/Zotero can be used to feed other information sources.

I recently was hospitalized after a surgery that had some complications
so my time is limited for this during the next 4-8 weeks, but I am
gradually coming back to online / FLOSS consulting activities. This
reminds me to focus a bit more on gathering such resources (press) in
either/both my Zotero/Semantic Scuttle accounts, so in a few more days I
may be able to better make my point and help more with this. If others
feel this makes sense we can work together, otherwise I am happy to
share my resources and compare results later on so the best decision can
take this forward.

Cheers,

I've been using 3.5.x since it's been available and installing/upgrading
quite a few users with it without any single major problem since.

The mailing list is really not a good indication of where the most
issues / frequent problems are. The mailing list is usually where the
hardest corner cases end up, as it takes an additional knowledge of how
to even post here to ask about them. That's my personal experience,
which is also not an absolute measure of this.

The bottom line is, unless you have a extensive survey and number to
back any claims like that, please don't spread assumption based on the
very few, English-only problems you're a witness of.

Cheers,

Hello Adriano

The guidelines for using the logo are here:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Logo_Policy

According to such guidelines you should not use the "The Document
Foundation" subtitle in your logo.

You shouldn't change the logo itself either, see the 5th example here:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Branding#Guidelines_and_Best_Practices

So unfortunately it seems your logo shouldn't be used as is.

Thanks a lot, can't wait to try it!

Cheers,

Some that immediately to mind:
* Reach: LibreOffice has reached a huge audience in short time, thanks
to fast adoption in the major Gnu/Linux distributions and several big
deployments
* Growing support: things like this seem more and more frequent, at a
local level: http://www.lanedo.com/libreoffice.html
* Health: recent TDF governance history and development points in the
right direction, there's every indication it's here to stay
* Funding (re: recent appeal to donations from OOo)

Those are the ones I can fit in a 3 minute explanation. Writing to a
website / software bundle editor requires a bit more tact not to fall
into agressive solliciting ;)

Hi,

Thanks for the reminder.

Other than handing over LibreOffice (in DVD or else) and flyers on that
day, is there anything specific we could prepare with regards to
LibreOffice ?

In Quebec province we've recently put together a "LibrePlanet" group and
this is among other activities we're promoting locally.

See:
http://libreplanet.org/wiki/Group:LibrePlanet_Quebec

This group structure has the advantage of being inclusive of all
Gnu/Linux distributions and other OSs as well, while pushing for broader
tech freedom advocacy in other "bubbles" that are not always exposed to
such information (including arts, agriculture, etc.).

I encourage other local advocacy groups to check the LibrePlanet groups
structure and start one if appropriate:

[libreoffice-marketing] Getting occurences of OpenOffice.org changed to LibreOffice - suggestions ?

2011-10-27 Thread Fabian Rodriguez
Hi

I occasionally still come across web sites and software bundles that
include OpenOffice.org.

Is there a recommended text / email template to use to suggest to such
content editors they switch to LibO ?

I can think of a few reasons but I've been away from the mailing lists
here for a few months now so I thought I'd ask directly in case there
are recent efforts for this.

Thank you,

Fabian Rodriguez

This is already being done by manufacturers:
http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-Compaq-Slate/104-Unsupported-wireless-network-device-detected/td-p/1152612

Secure Boot is only a way for every one of them to agree on a standard,
massive way of doing this.

I got the ISO and checked. It's LibreOffice 3.4.3 (build 302):
