Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: Great artwork

2011-02-15 Thread Paulo José

Hi all,

Good to see your interest on my 3D stuff! Thanks for the nice comments!
About to make generic wallpapers to press kit, it would be an actual
pleasure. Although, today I resume my university research and my
vacations will end in a week, so I'll have really few time and I'll need
time enough to complete the wallpapers. When do you think a deadline
could be dated?

Can you two - and who would like to join - help me with some ideas?

Cheers,
~Paulo

Well, these "wallpapers" are just tests rendered in a bigger resolution
[asked by Leif] and their textures have poor quality. Actually, the
resolution of textures (512px) is not enough to the 1024x768 format, so
you can see the aliasing effect in the center picture (look to green

2011-02-15 Thread Paulo José
Well, actually it's not a skin or something like that, but just images
made in Inkscape.

I think to make it installable, first we need change the way of
LibreOffice draws the screen (maybe including some libs like Cairo or
something else) to make possible a lot of new things visually. And for
sure it would take much more time to debug and polish the code, testing
in many systems... At last, I think (*think*) it's not possible make it
right now.

My though now it's LibreOffice need many changes and corrections in
another areas before we can do something like to renew completely the
user interface. Maybe when Citrus project is in a advanced level, I can
join myself and help with some design ideas. :)

Thank you for your interest! :D

Yeah, you're not wrong. The camera's perspective (50mm) makes the icons
look a bit different. But this impression is mainly because they are
placed in a circular arrangement, Base and Writer are rotated by 30
degrees and Calc and Draw by 10 degrees in camera direction. Just
Impress is set exactly front to camera. This Blender's screenshot may help:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-q7SezI5yxqM/TVyJQTfq8gI/AbA/bD7eHZ4SRN0/s1600/blender-icons-3d.png

By the way, the icons by themselves are a little bit "fat" in the
middle, how you can see in this initial test render:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tKhTPVdyN2Y/TVyLcDi44QI/AbE/rEVsFELDEec/s320/icons-01-0001.png

Something i was wondering was why some of the logos appear to be leaning
slightly or angled or is it a slight perspective? The Calc and Impress ones
seem to have a greater gap at the bottom than at the top in this one ...

Re: use of LibO. We had agreed a couple months ago that the use of LibO as short
form would not be encouraged as we wanted to get the LibreOffice brand name
known to people. This was also said in context of marketing materials. I don't
think that this would apply to file naming convention as sometimes we need to
abbreviate file names to make them fit.

As Italo says do not take this as an order, but IMO, I think that we would want
to make our official name known before advertising a short form. Many people
still have never heard of LibreOffice.

Just in case you are not aware, Italo Vignoli is our marketing lead. We rely
very much on his marketing expertise and wisdom.

Cheers

Marc

Hi :)

Yes, for internal communications we have been mostly using LibO or occasionally
LO but we want to avoid that getting out-there to the outside world. At least
for now. Outsiders, or people on the fringes will use a lot of different names
until they are familiar with the 'correct one'. We really want to establish
LibreOffice as the 'correct name' and that could take a long time.

In linux the 3 letters "lib" at the start of a name are 'reserved' for libraries
and after those 3 letters should be the functionality or a nickname. In a
similar way the letter K (or Qt) at the start of a name often indicates that the
project is built for the KDE desktop. A G often indicates something for the
Gnome desktop environment.

We (the wider OpenSource and linux communities) try to avoid being tooo strict
about any rules or guidelines and usually encourage diversity. Following rules
too closely can stifle innovation and creativity.

Regards from
Tom :)

Hi Marc!

Thank you so much for include my wallpapers in this page! Maybe we
should change the name of files to avoid the use of LibO (my fault, I'm
sorry). What do you think?

Hi Paulo:

I don't think there is anything wrong with the file names. We had just
discussed avoiding LibO when using Marketing materials going out to the
public. The LibO short name, in this case, makes sense as it would be
quite a bit longer if the full name were used. Therefore, I do not have
a problem with it. Unless anyone else complains, I do not see any reason
to change the file names.

Many thanks for the great work.

Cheers

Marc

Hi Paulo:

I now see that you have changed to LibreOffice on your next set. I will
change the names LibO to LibreOffice as you had suggested, just to keep
all of the file naming structure the same.

Cheers

Marc

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: Great artwork

2011-02-18 Thread Paulo José

Hi Christoph!

Yeah, this request was done in my blog too. The suggested resolution is
1600px large. Would be it enough? For make sure, I'm thinking to render
at 2500px. (I know some developers have even bigger screens... *my dream*)

And, as I said few minutes ago, today I'm having some left time, so your
ask will be answered sooner than you was thinking. :) I just did not it
before because it's not just re-render the pictures, but I need too
increase the quality of textures (export again in Inkscape) and the mesh
resolution (with a subdivision process called SubSurface) and it
increase a bit the render time too. But today I'm sure it'll be possible. ;)

I know you are not in a hurry. It's just to explain a little bit the
process. :P

See you,
~Paulo

Yeah, it was deliberated. But I can easily change that in the Gimp

Paulo, I really enjoy "my" new wallpaper, but (a very small but) it
looks a bit pixelated on my screen. So if (important: if, because there
is no urgency) you have some time left, could you please render them in
an even higher resolution?

I ask, because there might be some more adopters when offering wallpaper
sizes that match the (usually?) larger screens of the developers ;-)

Marc, thanks a lot for shaping the wallpaper wiki page! I've corrected
two minor issues, but I found it a bit difficult to find the "correct"
picture. I would love to tweak it a bit more, but I miss the time ... so
if anybody could have a look at it, this would be great!

One of my favorite pages to browse wallpapers (although no wiki page),
is the Gnome Backgrounds collection - maybe serving as an inspiration:

Here is how I did the table for the LibreOffice logos:

Thanks to you all - it's amazing to see that there is "not only"
LibreOffice the software :-)

Cheers,
Christoph

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: Great artwork

2011-02-19 Thread Paulo José

Hi all,

These are the bigger versions:

Wallpaper 1:
16:10 AR | 1920x1080px:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-1-1920px.png
4:3 AR | 1600x1200px:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-1-1600px.png

Wallpaper 2:
16:10 AR | 1920x1080px:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-2-1920px.png
4:3 AR | 1600x1200px:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Wallpaper-LibreOffice-2-1600px.png

They toke some hours to render... and still can't achieve the exactly
same look of them previous versions. :/ Maybe because I edited
(post-production) everything in Blender this time (GIMP is horrible to
edit bigger sizes - in my computer).

Could somebody help me to do and upload JPEG versions, if they are needed?

And what you think about to allow upload BLEND files to the wiki?

Good Saturday!
~Paulo

needed for now too.

I am not sure if we really need any .jpg versions. Unless people
really start asking for .jpg versions I don't think you need to worry.

Thanks a lot again for your fine work.
