Theme is a not a good term to use, as Microsoft Office has a different
feature under that name [1] and it is likely that we will implement it in
 the future.

Yes, and we already have Theme in Calc, so it could be confusing for our
users to have two functions with the same name (you access them using
the Tools toolbar and the Select Them icon). In the other hand that's
sad that we can't use the same name as Mozilla.

 How about skin instead?

/me thinking how I'll translate that :) but yes, that's a good idea.

Charles-H. Schulz will insist and make sure we get several of these

Maybe, you could also interview some l10n team members. This turn of
translation for 4.0 has been a huge effort for several of them. Through
this interview, this is possible to highlight also new features that
needs special attention like new financial functions or the new
conditional formatting manager and its options under Calc. I'm sure they
will be happy to talk about this hard and specialized work.

 * Topic #4 : Outstanding action items
Fridolin believes he has to know more about the general organization of
the project and the community before drafting the community
newsletter. There is thus an acute interest in mapping out the
community's team and general organization. Sophie Gautier has a mapping
that's missing details but that can server as a base. In any case it is

it seems you are quite disappointed with this outcome, and I am sorry

I've no problem with one planet in English only as it is now, but would

However, this is just my personal feeling, I am not vetoing anything here.

Shall I put this on the BoD's agenda for next weeks call maybe, to get

I don't think the BoD has to decide here, I will adopt what will be

Hi all,

The FR team is more than welcome to start their (our) own blog and
marketing team. Nothing has ever stopped us from doing it. Other nl
groups are doing it. But in the meantime, if you read the thread from
 Florian, there are plans coming.
Sorry to jump here, I'm not a marketer, but I would like to express some
ideas:
Marc, let me disagree here, it's not about the FR project but about a
general way the NL project are seen and the resources that are
offered/provided/requested to/by them. I lose 60% of my audience by
having my blog removed (that doesn't encourage me to go on of course)
but that means also that there is, inside our project, a
misunderstanding or a misconception about language representation and
their impact on the overall communication on the marketing side.

Taking care of our international EN site is another matter, it speaks
for the project and does not necessarily follow the schedule of other
 parts of the project.

No, if we don't think to the overall community we are going to lose, or
pass by a lot of people, there is no difference between i18n and
NLprojects and one doesn't speak for another (or tell me what is
happening currently in the Russian project just for example).
That's a long time I said that if we settle a tool, whatever the usage,
it should be available for the overall community, and not only for the
common denominator. We should be equal to all and provide the same
resources for all. Otherwise, it's very discouraging for the isolated
efforts and it needs to double them at any time to only hope to be
visible and more important: to be effective. I know how it's easier to
say that we act for what might be the broader audience, but we deal with
people for people and they have a lot to say if we let them have a
chance to say it. And whatever the language, it's much better than silence.

From a $$ perspective, this limits the number of domains that we need to
 budget for.
And it also gives credibility to the blog posts because it is directly
 hosted by LibreOffice.

That is important, whatever the blog if it is out of the community, it
will always suffer of lack of recognition or credibility, and it's not a
matter of money. More some projects need to be backed by the community
to make sure their credibility won't be attacked.

Kind regards
Sophie

 Yes, your understanding is perfect!

Thanks a lot :)

This FB group is META group to discuss how we can start,
continue or manage the LibreOffice offline meetings in each

It's very young, limited target group, but I hope it helps

Its more famous, widely used FB group in Japan.
We use the group to share the news, topics or something
interest about LibreOffice in Japanese. currently 184 ppl

well 185 now ;)

To be honest, our core community members mostly likes ML
or Twitter than FB, but we know FB is powerful tool to
reach many casual (non-geek) users that's why we care
 the group.

And you're right, any media that can help us to gather people is
welcome. But the Japanese group is far from the French one for example,
I didn't meet enough people to open a FB page, or a G+ or even a twitter
account.

Naruhiko, don't hesitate to report here what you're are doing, your
initiatives or anything you're putting in place. It's very interesting

I think this is less of a problem with nl groups. When FR-LibreOffice is
used, it usually means community unless you are on the download page.
But I think most people will associate the nl-LibreOffice with a
 community to start off with.

But most of the time we say that we are the LibreOffice community, and
for the FR group, we even don't use the letters for our marketing
material (the banner, pins, etc...). See also the marketing material
used by the other groups, we don't need to have anything else than
LibreOffice to feel that the community is behind.

The problem here is where to use LibreOffice to mean both the
community and the product. I am proposing that a subtle visual aid would
perhaps help in marketing our community and obviously help us in
marketing the already established product logo.

It's not necessary, we are used to have the same branding for the
product and the community. The product is our baby and we are part of
the product. No need to differentiate between the two, it is the same.

[libreoffice-marketing] Are we ambassadors ?

Hi all,

I would like to work with you on a concept that I like very much and I
would like to see if we could adapt it to our LibreOffice project, I
mean the Ambassador concept of the Fedora project

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors

I really like this definition :
'Fedora Ambassadors are experienced contributors to the Fedora Project
who are responsible for representing, promoting, and expanding the
Fedora Project and its ideals to the larger F/LOSS community and the
public at large.'

That embed more than just marketing and is really community at large
(more than Fedora project) building.
What do you think of the idea and who would be ready to work on settling
the structure for the LibreOffice project ?

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] call for location 2012

2011-10-02 Thread Sophie Gautier
Hi all,

As per Florian request, I'm posting here the draft I made, feel free
to add your mandatory items to the list:

On Mon, Aug 22, 2011 at 1:22 PM, Simon Phipps si...@webmink.com wrote:
[...]

I understood your proposal was to actually announce the new location in
Paris. I think that's impractical. But I do think it's possible to start the
call-for-location process now, promote it in Paris, and announce the new
location in January. The timeline for 2012 would look something like:

September 1st  : Announce the Call for Location for 2012
October 1st:  PR about the process, announce details of the Selection Panel
Paris conference:  Plenary slot explaining the process and timeline
 November  15th:  Applications close
 December:  Selection Panel reviews applications
 January 15th: Location announced

 And for 2013:

September 1st: Mention in PR there will be a 2013 selection process
November 15th:  Announce the Call for Location for 2013
January 15th:  Include news of 2013 process in PR
March:  Promote 2013 Call for Location
 May 31st: Applications close
 June/July: Selection Panel reviews applications
 August 30th: 2013 venue announced
October: @013 team attends and helps with 2012 conference

Points to take into account for the next proposal
+ main venue
- easy to access from international transports
- easy to access from accommodations
- at least 2 big rooms for conf hosting + one for meetings/others +
one place for community gathering

+ team
- at least 5 persons are necessary for the whole organization
- one should be dedicated to sponsor relations and to
invitations/visa, administrative tasks (it's very time consuming).
- have a local NGO for expenses and sponsoring and deal with the money

+ it could be along another event, but should have enough room/meeting
points for our own conf

---
Questions for the proposal:
- describe the location
- describe your team
- why would you like to host the conf
- have you local sponsors/organizations
- ?

Kind regards
Sophie

 Hi Leif,

Leif Lodahl wrote on 2011-08-17 17:48:

The Paris conference is in October and honestly, can we make a decision
before that? If not, lets leave it for the moment.

yes and no. I agree that we can spend our time with lots of other important
things. However, keep in mind that if we wait until the Paris conference is
over, first the next year's team misses the opportunity to collaborate with
this year's team, plus the preparation time for the teams gets shorter day
by day, not to forget the Christmas vacations.

As Leif said, it could be good to define the strusture of the call for
location now, but make the call much later. There is a lot to define
first, and this year conf wil help us even if we are several now to
have already organized that kind of event. We can help and share with
the next team later on.

I'm not saying we need to announce the next year's venue at Paris, but I
would like to at least start the process.

So we should begin to list things on the wiki.

My suggestion is that we raise the question for discussion: Should the
conference always be in Europe or should we circulate it. Or should we
perhaps have a main conference circulating and separate local
 conferences
on each continent. Many thoughts could come around, but we can't make a
final decision before Paris. In the future it could be a good idea to
announce next years revenue on this years conference but not this year.

That's indeed a tough question. I recall it from OpenOffice.org times as
well. IMHO Louis had the proposal of having a fixed set of countries or even
cities, amongst several continents, organizing the conference, so people can
plan and every continent has a chance.

However, looking at last year's proposals, it became harder and harder to
find a well balanced proposal, with financial support and the like, plus
 reachability by the target audience.

There has also been the proposal of hosting a RegiCon, a regional
 conference, besides the main conference.

These are indeed proposals we can look into. First, however, I would like to
see who would like to apply at all. If we only get proposals from, let's say
Europe and the US, we don't need to think about hosting a conference in
Asia, because no organizer is there

But, indeed, it's a tough question, I totally agree, and I really would like
to give everyone a fair chance of participating at our conference, which is
 Europe-centric at the moment.

I think we should start now with the content of the call for location
and what should not be avoided when setting it.

Kind regards
Sophie

But as a member of the committee, what I see is that Paulo membership

So this is simply not true that we have favored anybody here, and the

Re: [libreoffice-marketing] Re: help please - accessibility info

2011-03-05 Thread Sophie Gautier

Hi,
On 04/03/2011 19:41, webmaster for Kracked Press Productions wrote:

Thanks Marc. It would be a good marketing aspect if LibreOffice can
state that they are working towards making their package as accessible
as possible for all users, including those who have special
accessibility needs.

I wonder if any of the Voice-to-Text packages like Dragon that is
advertised on TV works with LibreOffice.

From what I know Dragon Naturally Speaking was working with
OpenOffice.org. I don't know yet with LibreOffice.

If LibreOffice is known to work

with some of these packages [Microsoft had a free one once], then it
could be stated as well. Whatever can be stated that makes LibreOffice
easy to use [especially easier than MSO] would be an advantage. This
package is not completely supporting .docx and other of the newest MSO
file formats, but hopefully that will become better supported. Stating
it can read/write Word .doc and Excel .xlt files works for my clients
when I do computer support. I still get/use those types of files and
templates and even though I save my copies to ODF formats, I send them
on as MSO files to those who have not yet switched due to agency IT
policies. Many of these agencies are those who support the needs of the
disabled/impaired individuals, both adult and youth.

The issue we get is that we lack of feedback about what software works
or not. I'm on two lists dedicated to visually impaired people (one is
located in France the other in Belgium) to get this feedback but they
are mostly Linux users.

I have a statement on the demo site for the Americas DVD project.
[quote]
LibreOffice supports a large number of file formats, including the
following:

Open Document Format [ODF], Microsoft® Office file formats, HTML,
WordPerfect, Rich Text Format, Lotus formats, Office Open XML, along with
many other word processor, database, spreadsheet, image/drawing, and
other formats used for personal and business needs.
[unquote]

It seems that there are over 80 lines in the open file type option in
the initial screen. It may be a good idea to list out all these
supported files some place on the distribution DVDs when you give
information about what file formats LibreOffice can read and those it
can write as. It may be something that could be given out on a sheet or
brochure with the CD/DVD copy of LibreOffice. I am thinking about that
myself. If there is something like that already made, it would be easier
than me making one up.

But back to the Accessibility issue. It would be nice to be known as an
organization the cares about the needs of better accessibility for
software packages. Though it is a small market group, it seems to be
good press. And the more good press LibreOffice gets, the better it is,
Right?

You're right. If we could have more feedback on the different tools,
their versions, etc and how they connect with LibreOffice it would be
good too.
I've made a FAQ in French for OpenOffice.org [1] that I'll port to
LibreOffice. If somebody wants to translate it in English, it would be
great because I won't have the time to do it before months. Also it
should be maintained and enhanced, it's not done currently.

Hello,

as we are quickly reaching our 3.3 release, during today's marketing
conference call, we collected items that should be done for the release
day. The date itself is not clearly fixed yet, but I expect it to be
within the next few days, so we should take a chance to work on it over
the weekend. :-)

Here's the list, any additions welcome:

* the local websites as well as libreoffice.org itself should be
prepared with the news

* we need to translate the features page into the various languages

* ideally, this comes also with localized screenshots that are used to
outline the new features

* the PR will soon be circulated and should then be translated into the
various languages and prepared for distribution

* you can add local quotes if you want

* we should point to local or global events where LibO community
members can be met, like FOSDEM and CeBIT:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Events

* we should throw local release parties:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/LibOReleaseEvents

* we might decide on a slogan to use for certain marketing activies:
http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Marketing/Slogan (#35 seems to be a
good choice :-)

* we need to get in touch with journalists

* for the spokespeople, I'm sure there are lots of local contacts who
built connections with journalists over the last years, and you are of
course free to talk about LibreOffice, the product and the community

* for media requests specifically concerning the Foundation, please
route them to the TDF spokespeople, currently Charles, Italo, Olivier
and myself

* we should get global quotes, Charles and I am working on this

Sorry for this rather short compilation, and especially sorry for
staying so absent in the marketing list the last weeks. The
infrastructure and the foundation things kept me rather busy, but I am
now slowly coming back also to marketing and will contribute as I did
during my OOo times. :-)

We will also gradually improve structure, like local marketing contacts
and the like, so the workflow is even more optimized for 3.3.1 and 3.4. :-)

Thanks for all your help!
Florian

no need to worry. You see screenshots of software running under

No, it's not my interpretation (I know I may not have a full
understanding of another language :), we never get a firm statement but
only different interpretations from lawyers, this is why we have decided
to not use screen shots made using Windows. I can't remember where the

to the archives otherwise.

It may sound stupid, but can you imagine that I had to declare people
using ssh for the OOoFR site in France several years ago because the
encryption we used was not allowed and considered as a security issue.
I'm sure the Debian contributors never have to do so. Just to say that
we have to be cautious.

In any case, I already took a large number of screenshots, and our
documentation is *full* of screenshots taken under Windows, so this

Yes may be, but it's not a sufficient reason to continue to take the

a couple of weeks so that I can understand the community's priorities as
LibO nears its first official release. Now, I am postingto find a way to
work with your community.

Must have been interesting times, all the lurking ;-)

Normally, to get an idea of where I can best make a positive
contribution, I would read the product's roadmap. Unfortunately, I can't
find it. From the main wiki page[1], I've read through the Marketing and
Design sections and skimmed the others. Both Marketing and Product
Development have their lists[2][3] but I am hoping for a document which
explicitly matches short- and long-term goals with the LibO's
technologies. A couple of different (random) F/LOSS examples of what I'm
talking about would be Eclipse[4] or Plone[5].

Alternatively, maybe there is a list of tasks to which I can be
referred? Or should I take this off-list and talk with someone
specifically?

Great to see your interest in this subject!

Alas, as for now, in our young and fast evolving project, there is no
clear roadmap.

Interesting for you I think, is the following announcement:
http://listarchives.documentfoundation.org/www/announce/msg00016.html

Furthermore, it is on my personal to do list, to start gathering
information (mainly from developers) to find out if there are more items
that can give insight in future plans. Although I think planning is
difficult at the moment, and also it is hard to predict what ideas and
code new developers will come up.
Anything better then nothing though.

If it can help, for the features list, I've ask that an issue is open
each time a new feature is implemented, so I think we'll find a special
tag on BZ, then we can retrieve a the new features very quickly and more
often than now, where it only happens long after feature freeze.

Also, I'll try to add details for the l10n/doc/marketing projects.

So we should be able to have the beginning of the schedule (I'm going to
put the one for 3.3 online today), with the feature freeze date, l10n
hand off, etc, that should help to draw the roadmap for 3.4 and 3.x.

In any case, Cor, if you need help, don't hesitate to ping me.

Kind regards

Similarly for these discussions about strategy and overview = do they really
belong in marketing?

Yes, because the marketing team has in charge to market the product, but
also the community. So being aware of what's going on on each part of
the project, its global strategy, having an overview of it and being
able to advertise all this is an important task for the health of the

The issue of the task mentioned by Marc is that it requires a lot of

successful policy. The Drupal trademark cannot be used by for-profit
companies or in their domains, but it is permitted for non-profits and

them, and could provide a good model for LibreOffice as well.

It's a good idea, but this policy will require significant adaptations
to be useful for LibreOffice: for example, Drupal is not sold on DVDs,
and does not share code with similar projects bearing its name (to make
it clear: I can envisage someone wanting to build and distribute/sell
something called LibreOffice Professional Edition consisting of
LibreOffice + extras; this would be done in Drupal in a different way,
with installation profiles not containing the Drupal name).

The Drupal policy is very complex anyway: http://drupal.com/trademark
And moreover, handling requests is quite a burden for Dries Buytaert
(the trademark holder), at about 100/year (89 in 11 months):
http://buytaert.net/drupal-trademark-policy-update-after-11-months

So it's good to have a policy but you have to spend a lot of resources
either to create a suitable one (you can use Drupal's as a starting
point, but it really needs to be adapted and discussed) or to handle
requests.

Fully agreed, and that should also be discussed with our packagers. Some

[libreoffice-marketing] Features list

2010-12-16 Thread Sophie Gautier

Hi all,
[sorry for the cross post, but I need you all on this]

I've finished to complete the feature list [1] on the wiki that Marc did
upload some time ago (Cor you get the same but not complete and not sorted).

So, dear developers if you preferred feature is not there, add it to the
page or shout at me ;)

Dear QA members, please also, use this list against RC2 to test these
new or enhanced functionalities. We will have more formal TCS next time,
but, we need your help to make sure every thing is ok and there is no
regression.

Dear marketing people, I'm sure Italo will give you some guidance on the
most important ones at the marketing level, but may be you can make also
some proposal and design a page so that he only has to review it.

Dear localizer, I hope this will help you to test/check your
translation. If you need more details or don't find a functionality,
don't hesitate to ask on the list.

And finally, dear documentation team, I'm sure we will soon have good
knowledge on how to use those new and unavoidable features our
developers have designed with the help of your nice writings :-)

I would like to thank every body for the great work that has been
already done and will be done for our first version all together :-)

I can see how a USB stick would be a more elegant way of distributing
the distro. The price would seem to be the only problem that I can see.
Framakey (Framasoft) is offering a 4gig stick for 19Euro and 4Eu
shipping. A smaller and less expensive stick could be offered with just
the LO distro on the stick. The cost would have to be kept as low as
possible. Framasoft carries the portable OOo, I imagine that they will
eventually carry the portable LibreOffice as well. I am not sure if he
has pronounced himself on this.

IMO, it would be best to try to foster communities where there is a very
low LibreOffice presence and from there encourage the creation of a
distribution system locally. Perhaps these groups would elect to use the
USB key format rather than CD/DVD.

So, I'm currently discussing it with Pierre-Yves as they have a project
to deliver content directly to the Francophone countries. There is also
some initiatives that may be used for sponsoring see :

Sophie,

Does the above link refer to possible grants from a government or
foundation? Something that could help cover the costs of distribution
by CD, DVD or other media? If so, that is a very promising avenue to
pursue.

Yes, it's a kind of foundation, it will need some work and we shouldn't
take it for granted, but it's a very interesting possibility to bring
software and contents where it's very difficult to get it. It has to be
dedicated to education, peace, women education, etc.

In any case, the idea of sponsorships for free CDs mailed to new
users is worth considering. Perhaps sponsors would ask to advertise
on the exterior of the case the media is shipped within, in exchange
for covering the cost? (Netflix envelopes all include ads inside the
package, which must help defray their operating costs.)

Yes, may be, and I like that we consider it when possible.

Definition of Community member becomes more and more important, so we
should find a way to have an official list on the website (or on the wiki
with locked content) stating their names and contributions.

There is a work on this done by Sebastian Spaeth, the listing for the
moment conerns developers and wiki contributors. Of course this is a
work in progress visible here:

Which brings up the colour palette.  Has the Libre Colour Palette (or
whatever it was called) been added to the standard palette for LibO?

I have it on my system, but that is because I added it to my custom
 palette.

Oh, nice question - I didn't even think about it :-) At the moment it is
meant to be the LibreOffice branding color palette. So it focuses on
some few branding related colors. It is not meant to replace the normal
color palettes in LibO ... but as I said, I didn't even think about it.
Once the colors are stable and proven, we might add it as an additional
 palette. Nice idea!

I've to check with Cédric but I think it was his idea to add them to
the palette.

Kind regards
Sophie

 Hi Marc,

You should have a look at OOo Education Project and OOo4Kids fork.
Whatever I think about forks ( ;-) ), OOo4Kids has several good ideas to
adapt OOo to children. The main idea is not to add functions but to
remove/hide the functions that are too complex or not used in
 educational context.

 Best regards.

 Bonjour Jean-Baptiste:

Actually, I think there is a thread somewhere on the mailists where there
was talk of theming the LibO suite and some of this could be used to
 theme the menu list.

There was a debate as to when you could theme, either at installation or
after installation. I would prefer after installation and an Educational
Theme could be installed that would change the menus list and perhaps add
more educationally related extensions, cliparts, themes etc.

Obviously this would have to be coordinated with an interested dev.

BTW ... Do you know if OOo4Kids is supporting the LibO project?

I would say no, but it's very difficult to know in fact (it mays
depend of the blowing wind ;). As you're able to read French, I'll
send you tomorrow some updated comments from Eric Bachard on several
forum this last days, you'll be able to make up your mind by yourself.
Of course, he can't bear several of us here, but that's not the topic.

Kind regards
Sophie
