Their software may be worse but they give 10Gigabytes(up to 50 via
activities etc). I very often see public links from MF and also see files
from MF appeared on the search results. From the data compete.com the have
approximately over 4 million visits monthly. Lower than dropbox with a high
acceleration in recent period. 4 to 10 same trend in Google Drive!
(Dropbox and Samsung's afdiliation programme may be another reason they
give 50 gigs space for a S series smartphone)

For Alexa.com mf is world's 143th most visited site, where dropbox 113.

But there is another questions. Personal visits or organic search engines.
The latter is more important i guess MF may have greater score there as
its users comes from the Rapidshare generation mostly public file share.

Anyway they have great numbers :) Apache's move (if they had) seems smart
for me.

Best regards
Zeki

I tested MediaFire and it definitely sucks in comparison with DropBox,
Google Drive and OwnCloud. It is so slow, and the client is huge in
comparison with all the others (which I regularly use, so I can judge
fairly well). I will write them in any case, and I will try to be gentle
and sweet.

Formal contact as TDF will be better. Thanks.

Right -- in the case of OOXML, my understanding is that their "open
specification promise"[1] is tantamount to a (rather permissive)
license.

The statement is not correct, by the way, because the format is not
licensed but is free to use based on a statement provided in 2008 at the
time of OOXML standardization.

MediaFire appears to use the same blurb for OOXML files (such as DOCX)
as well as ODF files (such as ODT):
---
About Document Formats

Microsoft published the specs for XML file formats in 2003 and
licensed them to competitors. Over the years there has been a push
toward an open standards environment, and currently Open XML and Open
Document Format (ODF) are at the forefront. The XML format is very
much in favor because data in a file can be reused. This reuse was not
possible with binary file formats. The XML format is expected to be
the future of document file formats.
---

In the case of OOXML, "Microsoft published the specs for XML file
formats in 2003 and licensed them to competitors" may be correct, but
I feel like that sentence is a bit misleading for ODF or other non-MS
XML document formats. Perhaps just dropping the sentence altogether
might be preferable.

I have subscribed to the service and installed the desktop software, to
have a better understanding of MediaFire. I will get in touch with them
ASAP.

Thanks for the pointer Zeki. Could you contact MediaFire? Otherwise
TDF itself can do it (Italo?).

[libreoffice-marketing] MediaFire.com and Apache OO

2013-12-01 Thread Zeki Bildirici
Hi,

Today i was downloading a pdf from MediaFire and i saw that MediaFire
and Apache OO has some referral relationship.

I've uploaded three sample files to MF
- http://www.mediafire.com/download/1ssxqapco3cp17i/Adsız+1.pdf
- http://www.mediafire.com/download/s0nndij0b21zv90/Adsız+1.docx
- http://www.mediafire.com/download/zmp5wh1aa7h2uwy/LXDE+renk+ayarı.odt

When you click these links you may see the box(right) says that [filename]
can be opened with:
Apache OpenOffice

doc, docx, odt, ods also PDF files have this suggestion there and it
directs to Apache OO Download page.

Thinking millions and millions of downloads in a day in MF, it seems a
very good advertising there.

I don't know if this suggestions are os based (but as i see it
suggests Windows Photo Preview and Apple Preview to me on a Linux
machine)

FYI,
Zeki
