I added this to the ticket, but figured I'd mention it as well --

ansible.cc is not correct -- should be replaced with ansible.com :)

Re: [Marketing] article "Linux best bets: There's a desktop distro just right for you"

2016-03-24 Thread Sylvia Sánchez
Hi!

Normal human being here, not a developer.

Unity is weird to anyone who isn't used to. Period.
Fedora it's the best distro for designers from my point of view. Why nobody
ever mention it?
That thing about "Fedora is for devs only" is getting on my nerves
really. I find it way simpler than Ubuntu that breaks half a system every
time it upgrades. Manjaro it's also very simple and has more intuitive
environments than Ubuntu.

I don't know, I'd like to read something new instead of always the same
thing repeated over and over.

Cheers,
Sylvia

I would have to agree with you on the overall tone of the article. Hit
on the 'developer' bit, but overstated on needing to be a Linux expert.
There are times when I think articles need to find differences that do
not exist in order to make the article longer.

[Marketing] article "Linux best bets: There's a desktop distro just right for you"

2016-03-24 Thread Matthew Miller
For today's round of "analyzing our press coverage", I bring you:

http://www.zdnet.com/article/five-steps-to-picking-the-right-linux-desktop-for-you/

Plus: Includes Fedora as one of 'em.

Plus: Has Fedora for "I'm a developer, not a user!" — that's a
messaging "hit", since developers are the primary target for Fedora
Workstation.

Plus: Nice mention of Spins, without, I think, confusing the overall
message.

Minus: Limits "developers" this to "Linux developers", which is _way_
too narrow.

Minus: Says "If you're not already a Linux expert, or determined to
become one, you shouldn't use Fedora." Ouch — that's also way too
narrow. As the Workstation team says "Developers are people, too."

Confusing: Very next line is "Oh it's not hard to use." so,
why shouldn't you use Fedora unless you are determined to be an
expert? This makes no sense to me.

Sounds awesome!

Feel free to edit and update any sections! I just added some content in

Yeah, an extra couple sections at the end too (after the export step)
covering getting extenstions and brushes in fedora for gimp would be
awesome too.

I've grown fond of prefacing privileged commands with ' ]# ' and
unprivileged commands with ' ]$ '. Folks usually recognize the end of a
$PS1, and you can't teach about sudo/su/polkit/etc every time.

Looks Good!

Some Feedback:

- The "free software" in the first paragraph of panel #3 in the inner
graphic should be capitalized
- Where we have bullet points, perhaps we could use some kind of
graphical element, instead of boring old dots? That heart, scaled
down, could do nicely, or little python logos maybe? Just a though.
- in the "outer" file, the "did you know" panel is a little
wall-o-text-y. Can we fit line breaks between the bullets?
- in the 'outer' file, maybe getting rid of the bullet points in the
"Python Questions" and instead mirroring the type of formatting you
used in "Get packages"?
- putting a "$" in front of our "dnf" commands, and possibly adding
"sudo" to the front of "dnf install" command?
- Possibly intentional, but the yellow snake is overlapping the "did
you know?" box in the bottom left corner. Perhaps we can make the blue
snake overlap on the top right, or drop the yellow one below for
consistency?
- I would udpdate the Fedora loves python section with pyrasite
https://github.com/lmacken/pyrasite, and Tahrir
https://github.com/fedora-infra/tahrir

Thanks BKP,

Is this page in an obvious position anywhere on the wiki? I feel like

Re: [Marketing] [Magazine] Darktable article

2016-03-24 Thread Justin W. Flory

On 03/22/2016 10:41 AM, James Bishop wrote:

Hello everyone,

After reviewing the GIMP article, I had the idea that I could write a
similar article for Darktable and was wondering if there was any
interest. I have a fair bit of experience in this area, having been a
professional/serious amateur photographer since 2007, and having used a
wide array of RAW editing software. As for the format, I can see several
possibilities:

1. A quick overview of the software.
2. Switching to Darktable from a certain popular proprietary option.
3. A series of articles looking at different aspects of Darktable
(library management, RAW editing, etc.).

Let me know what you think.

Hi James! Like everyone else in the thread said, I think this series is
an awesome idea and you've laid a pretty good outline of how the series
would go as well.

The next step I would take is to begin drafting the article inside of
the Fedora Magazine. Consider your idea itself as good as approved. :)
However, you may still find it useful to follow these guidelines for
writing pitches here.

https://fedoramagazine.org/writing-a-new-pitch/

You won't need to get approval from us to move on, but even for my own
articles, I still write a "pitch" to organize the ideas in my head and
have a clear, concise road map for how the article will go (useful for
the bigger and complex topics).

Looking forward to seeing what you put out!
