[Marketing] "Golden chance to translate Fedora 24 in your language"

2016-03-30 Thread Justin W. Flory

Hi all,

At 8:00 UTC (4:00am US EST), 2016-03-31, a new article will be published
on the CommBlog.

https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org/translate-fedora-24-in-your-language/

The G11n team is organizing a vFAD over this next week, and they could
use some additional social media exposure on this blog post. Any extra
highlighting / social media spotlight would be appreciated once it is
published!

Thanks.

I'm +1 to something cheeky, but -1 to it being about Microsoft.

I think we'd have to think carefully about about this, but I'm open to
ideas. Even just making the magazine upside-down for the day could be funny
enough without making it about anyone else.

I like the idea though :)

Thinking about this a little more, I think it actually would be a good
possibility to add that some parts of Edge are open source, which could
help us "port" IE/Edge to Linux? Perhaps without the "endorsement" part? :)

dnf install python-thingy does not work anymore. dnf does not support
install by Provides, and most packages are now called python2-thingy or

 "Get packages" could say:
Want to install what you find?
dnf install python2-thingy
dnf install python3-thingy

I'd also add a blurb like:
Fedora 24 includes 1278 rpms for Python 2.7 and 2873 for Python 3.5.

(This is the result of dnf repoquery --releasever=24 --whatrequires
 'python(abi) = 2.7' --qf '%{name}'|sort -u|wc -l. Maybe some better query
 should be used.)

Re: [Marketing] [commops] [Magazine] Planning ahead for this Friday

2016-03-30 Thread Chaoyi Zha
Hi Huiren,

This sounds interesting! I appreciate your feedback, but I'm not sure that
we can infer that Microsoft is "collaborating" or endorses Fedora since it
is not true. That could get into a more lofty area that we might not want
to get involved with.

In regards to Chakra being open source, I think, inherently, the article is
making a joke, not proposing a real product or project. Hence, I think
talking about the open source components of Edge and "collaboration" would
be a bit of a grey area and a bit too convincing, perhaps?

Although Edge exists, I think IE is still available for download for those
who are looking for it. I think using IE rather than Edge might be a good
way to provide comedy value without getting into too many problems. Instead
of talking about details and aspects that might imply endorsement when
there is none, we could try parodying some well-known "issues" or aspects
of Fedora, for instance, its speed, its crashes, or its lack of
compatibility. We could also put in some edited screenshots for fun, if we
can get some before the end of the day tomorrow :)

What do you think?

Comment (by jflory7):

I just sat down and took a look through the brochure. I left my comments
 in the [https://fedorahosted.org/design-team/ticket/434#comment:9 Design
Team ticket], but since we also requested feedback in this ticket, I will
 also post them here:

 * '''outer: "Learn more at:"'''
  * This should probably be https://getfedora.org/ instead of
http://www.fedoraproject.org. Even though it redirects, it's probably more
accurate to use the domain you are redirected to versus the
fedoraproject.org domain. The QR code may need to be updated too.
 * '''outer: Python questions? Wiki page'''
  * https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/SIGs/Python
  * Linking to the wiki page here might be a good idea too since a lot of
information about how to help / get involved is included here.
 * '''inner: Get Fedora'''
  * The URL used is get.fedoraproject.org. Should probably be
 https://getfedora.org/
 * '''inner: Mentioning DevAssistant'''
  * DevAssistant is a popular tool to help get development workspaces set
up and ready to go, saving time from having to prepare a workspace
environment. Based on feedback received on the list and also at events, I
think making mention of DevAssistant somewhere in the brochure is a good
 idea as well.

Re: [Marketing] [Proposal] Auto-publish CommBlog posts to main @Fedora Twitter Account

2016-03-30 Thread Justin W. Flory

On 03/28/2016 09:31 PM, Joe Brockmeier wrote:

On 03/28/2016 03:04 PM, Remy DeCausemaker wrote:

It has been suggested that we adjust the community blog's jetpack
plugin to post to the main @Fedora twitter account, so that we are not
dividing our content. The only possible issue that we have here is
that there is occasional cross-promotion that occurs between Magazine
and CommBlog. When we have big announcements--we post pointer or
wrapper articles between the two. This would create some overlap or
echo within the twitter feed.

Even with this echo consideration in mind, I would propose to the mktg
list that we auto-publish posts from the CommBlog to the main @Fedora
twitter account, now that we've established our readership and
editorial process a bit further.

This will *significantly* improve the visibility of our contributor
focused content published on CommBlog, as well as increase the
frequency of posts to the @Fedora twitter account (roughly 2-10
articles per week.)

Thank you all for your time and attention to this proposal, and votes
and discussions are welcome here.

We've had two -1s for auto-posting, so I'd suggest a bit of a modification:

1) Let everything from Community Blog auto-post to @fedoracommunity, but
make the profile clear that's exactly what it is. No effort to build
following there but if it grows organically, spiffy.

2) Explicitly add Community Blog to sources for human-curated content
going to @fedora.

   # # #

Also, can we get a sound-off on the humans who currently *are* curating
content? It feels a bit wild west to me at the moment, as I'm never
quite sure if there's anybody at the switch on a particular day.

And is anybody tending to @replies to @fedora?

I'm also -1 to auto-posting to the Fedora accounts because of the human
aspect. It is possible to generate tailored messages within Jetpack for
posts to automatically go out when an article is published, but this can
cause problems when you post to multiple platforms (e.g. tagging
@thisThing works on Twitter but doesn't on Facebook, Google+ has
+thisThing and nobody else does, etc.).

In short, I think carefully curating the content posted to the "main"
social media account is the right way to do it, even if it's more manual
labor.

As for the Community Blog proposals listed by jzb, I'm +1 to both. I see
no harm in having *ALL* CommBlog posts go to @fedoracommunity, but
sometimes there might be an article that is worthwhile to share with the
greater community, even those who aren't exclusively contributors to
Fedora. Therefore, I also see no harm in having Community Blog articles
posted to official @Fedora accounts while keeping the @fedoracommunity
account standing.

In my eyes, the idea is that we handpick content from the CommBlog that
should be syndicated with the larger social media presence. Not
everything that comes out on the CommBlog needs to be shared on all the
accounts all the time.

To help answer that question about who is behind Fedora social media, I
CC'd the social media list in case anyone with privileges is watching
that list and can chime in to confirm. As far as Twitter goes, I don't
actively see the @Fedora account replying or engaging with replies or
content, but I wonder if this is a manpower issue? This came up between
me and bkp at a meeting, I think, but there are not any SOPs documenting
how to get involved with social media or how someone can contribute
outside of posting to the social-media mailing list. If more hands are
needed for this, I would also be happy to volunteer some time to help
with engagement.

[Marketing] Request for Review: Python marketing brochure

2016-03-30 Thread Justin W. Flory

Hello all,

Brian (bprofitt / bkp) recently helped finish the final proposed version
of the brochure we plan to use in the field for quick information about
Fedora + Python.

If some Pythonistas could help review the brochures and make sure the
content checks out and sounds good, your help would be appreciated!

You can find the latest copies of the brochure in this ticket.

To help prevent communications from being lost in cross-posted mailing
lists, if anyone who is able could give a +1 / -1 in the ticket, that
would be appreciated! Thanks all.

[Marketing] [Magazine] Planning ahead for this Friday

2016-03-30 Thread Justin W. Flory

Hi all,

I'm forwarding this email on behalf of Chaoyi (cydrobolt) – he was
having issues posting to the mailing list and this was a time-sensitive
topic. I chose a somewhat ambiguous subject to keep it low-key for if we
go with this to keep the surprise element.

* * * * *

Hey all!

As you may know, April Fool's is coming up this Friday. For those
unaware, it is a day where many people and organisations play "pranks"
by writing interesting articles.

For instance, Microsoft recently has posted an article about "bash in
Windows 10", which also includes a section joking about the availability
of Ubuntu binaries within Windows 10.

Justin and I were thinking about publishing an April Fool's article on
Fedora Magazine. Some ideas included "Internet Explorer now default
internet browser in Fedora 24" or "Fedora will support sticky keys in
Fedora 24"

If we made an April Fool's article about Internet Explorer (r), we would
be using a Microsoft trademark. However, the usage should be covered
under fair use because it is a parody and “use of some elements of a
prior author’s composition to create a new one that, at least in part,
comments on that author’s works.” (Campbell v. AcuffRose Music, Inc.)

See
https://apps.americanbar.org/litigation/committees/intellectual/roundtables/0506_outline.pdf

I think the post about Internet Explorer could be interesting, and
sticky keys would also be a quite interesting post. It would help us
garner free publicity and enjoy a good joke :)

After April Fool's, we can mend the article to show that it was an April
Fool's prank. It seems only fair since Microsoft has made April Fool's
pranks about Linux for many years in a row :)

Any input is appreciated! You may also ping us on #fedora-mktg

If either of these ideas are good, I can draft an article and get it
ready to publish before April 1st :)

Cheers,
Chaoyi

[Marketing] Regrets for tonight's meeting

2016-03-30 Thread Joe Brockmeier
Hey all,

Going to have to send regrets for tonight's meeting, I have conflicting
plans. Next week may be bad as well, I'll be traveling and probably not
near the computer at meeting time.

Please let me know if there's anything I can address by email.

Best,

Re: [Marketing] Gimp article for review

2016-03-30 Thread Sylvia Sánchez
Hi Ryan!

OK. Let's drop the "extra menus". What about mentioning that there's
a lot of extra stuff available (highlighting the very extensible
nature of Gimp)? Just as a line or two. I could write one or two
short separated articles for them after this one.
About the search command... If they don't install the whole bunch or
most of it it's very little what they can do. The programme works
well and it's awesome with them. Without the "extra" stuff, isn't
better than any other basic edition programme and it's even below than
many mobile apps.
I don't want people installing it just to say "This is rubbish, I'm
better with xx in my phone".
Also don't forget that many people look up to Gimp as a substitution
of Photoshop. It wouldn't be fair with Gimp if it's introduced as a
bare thing, it reinforces the idea of "Open Source Software isn't
good and can't reach commercial software (closed source) quality".
My thoughts,

Cheers,
Sylvia

My reasoning here was that for the majority of first-time GIMP users, they
are probably unlikely to want to install any extra plugins or filters, but
just want to install the main package. The thought I had was to give them
the simple quick command to just get it.

sections were a little out of scope for an intro to GIMP article.

Hi Ryan!

First comment: The search goes first so you install everything
together. It's a waste of time for no reason to search afterwards.

Second comment: Why did you discard Video? Most of people don't know
Gimp can do that but it does and quite well. Of course, it isn't like
using a full dedicated programme but if you have something you want to
edit and you already have Gimp it well worth a try.

Third comment: Any reason to discard FX-Foundry and Script-FU?

That's it.

Re: [Marketing] Gimp article for review

2016-03-30 Thread Ryan Lerch
OKies, thanks for the changes Sylvia!

I have done another editorial pass on this, added some of the missing
sections from the first half of the article, and edited and pruned some of
the parts in the second menu-walkthroughs section.

Would another editor be able to do a quick pass at this? i am quite deep
into it now, so having another set of eyes run over it would be awesome!

cheers,
ryanlerch
