[Marketing] Self-Introduction: Michael Downey

2016-07-20 Thread Michael Downey
Hi, my name is Michael Downey and I live in the USA (soon moving to Portland,
Oregon, UTC-8). My Fedora Account System (FAS) username is downey, and my IRC
nick is also downey.

I've worked in free & open source software in the past. Most recently, I was
the director of community for OpenMRS, an open source electronic medical record
system. I'm currently serving on the steering committee for LibreHealth, a new
umbrella organization just getting started for open source Health IT projects.

Recently I've had some extra time on my hands and have been working to get up
to speed to contribute to a few FOSS projects that I really care about. I
learned about the Fedora Marketing team through the wiki, and thought I might
be able to help out. I've done quite a bit of marketing work for OpenMRS in the
past, and hope that I can add some experience to help Fedora, since I've been a
user for many years now. Some of my experience includes blogging & content
strategy, social media strategy, advertising, graphic design for online & print
media, web design, community leadership/management, etc. I've already done one
blog post for Magazine which is up at
https://fedoramagazine.org/the-ultimate-fedora-t-shirt/.

As a long-time Fedora user, I hope to do what I can to help spread the word
about one of my favorite FOSS projects. People have done a great job so far,
but there are still millions of people to get involved, and lots of the planet
still un-informed! :-)

One thing that crossed my mind today was getting the @Fedora account on Twitter
to have verified status. I got this for the @OpenMRS account and Twitter just
announced a streamlined process yesterday at
https://blog.twitter.com/2016/announcing-an-application-process-for-verified-accounts.
 What do others think?

Looking forward to learning more and helping more!
Michael

Yep, no problem!

I think a pre-event article would be useful in giving our greater user
audience an idea of what's coming. Flock is definitely the biggest event
in Fedora of the year, and many of the decisions and collaboration that
happen there end up being reflected in the future of the distribution.
One of the most interesting talks, in my eyes anyways, is FPL Matthew
Miller's "State of Fedora" talk, where he gives the low-down on how the
project is doing with some statistics and numbers, and puts his own
personal feel for where the project is headed. In short, I think
communicating this to our user community, albeit a little bit more
abstractly, would be helpful.

Covering some of the content in terms of both the technical talks and
the hands-on workshops where contributors are making changes would be a
good angle to cover. I'm not sure if there will be streams (best to
assume not unless given direct confirmation there will be because of
bandwidth issues). But *definitely* highlighting the coming of daily
updates on the Community Blog would be useful.

It would be really cool to see some active journalism happening *during*
Flock too, from my eyes. That would be nice to help generate some more
buzz. :)

Hi Natalie! Thanks for reaching out again.

I'm not personally aware of any professional journalists or other news
sources that would be at Flock other than some of the people on this
list. :) In terms of getting an answer specifically to that, you'd
probably want to reach out to the Flock staff organizers. You can reach
them at flock-st...@fedoraproject.org. Usually, it's a pretty quick
turnaround on a reply, and they should be able to help tell you
specifically about any needs for press coverage at Flock. But, to the
best of my knowledge, there is not anything in line right now.

In other replies, you asked about where you could publish a daily
report. As far as that would go, the Fedora Community Blog would be the
best place for daily updates. You can find that here:

 https://communityblog.fedoraproject.org

It would also probably be nice to have a big wrapper post at the end of
the conference covering the event as a whole. That would definitely be
best for the Magazine (or maybe even something *before* the event too,
as a precursor to what's coming)!

Hope this info helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!

Comment:

I'm curious: Are there a lot of shared accounts that need to be managed?

Twitter allows teams to be defined through their Tweetdeck.com web site
with no need to share passwords. Facebook also allows multiple admins on
pages. Hootsuite of course does too (and they may offer a discount to a
FOSS project) but they charge per person and the cost does add up.

There are other alternatives like LastPass (mix of propietary & free)
which allows shared folders as long as one person pays for a "premium"
account, as well as KeePass & KeePassX (both FOSS) and maybe Seahorse. I
don't know how the latter ones would work for sharing, e.g., via a private
git repo, but it should be easy enough to find out.

 Just "food for thought". :-)

Sorry to reply to myself, but since no one else commented... :-)
Something I was considering today was whether these topics all make
sense to include in the RSS feed. Let's say I write a "shorty"
article from this list, like how to enable the SSH server. Do we want
that to automatically end up in the feed at the top? Does it matter?
I have a feeling that it probably doesn't, but if an editor or other
knowledgeable person had some information to help guide, it would be
helpful.
