Hey Pravin!

Regarding your original idea, are you meaning to say you'd
like to
get feedback from everyday users about translations and
feedback in
Fedora to see their opinions?

That will be great, to get these kind of feedback. Presently we
are very
much dependent on testing day and bugzilla.

Looking at the wiki page, it seems like more of an update on the
internationalization / globalization efforts going on in Fedora,
which is awesome! For this data, though, I would probably
publish on
the Community Blog instead of the Magazine. We could
probably do a
short "pointer" post on the Magazine to the CommBlog article to
increase some outside exposure from users there too.

Actually, i was interested to tweak this information from magazine
perspective but agree with you by saying present contents suits to
communityblog :)
I will prepare first draft, may be this week and then we can
again think
again about suitability. I am happy with both case (Magazine or
Communityblog with pointer in Magazine)

Thanks,
Pravin Satpute

I think either way would work well. Depending on the angle you want
to take (or maybe even both), we could try putting out an article
about this on either platform. If you want to write something up on
one platform, we can always port to the other one fairly easily.

Drop us a line once you're ready for it to be reviewed. :)

The http://keywordtool.io site discovers popular searches based on
keywords. I entered "Fedora how to" and here is the list it retrieved
for me:

https://paste.fedoraproject.org/392172/84893614

While some of the searches are not necessarily good ones for a short,
targeted article, many are. I would propose that we use this list to
seed article pitches and assign them to new writers, rather than doing
just arbitrary technical articles which may not perform as well over
the long term.

By the way, Rikki mentioned that titling the article just like a
search can help boost its visibility as well, e.g. "How to start sshd
on Fedora."

Sorry to reply to myself, but since no one else commented... :-)
Something I was considering today was whether these topics all make
sense to include in the RSS feed. Let's say I write a "shorty"
article from this list, like how to enable the SSH server. Do we want
that to automatically end up in the feed at the top? Does it matter?
I have a feeling that it probably doesn't, but if an editor or other
knowledgeable person had some information to help guide, it would be
helpful.

Hmm, maybe I misunderstand the question, but I don't see a reason to not
include them in the feed. I guess the concern is over whether a
subscriber would be interested in the "shorter" tip articles. But for
something like RSS, I imagine it's best to be consistent and make the
same noise as usual for posts.

The RSS feed is also syndicated for start.fedoraproject.org too, so I
think the potential of a newbie Fedora user catching the article there
too is pretty great, so we might even get increased traffic from there
for some of these articles. Not that I have anything to actually back
that statement, but it's a guess, maybe. :)

which I've officially sought to be a part of.

My Skills, which I hope to utilize in Fedora Marketing, include:

  * Promotions – I was the assistant director of Circulation

for several years in which I oversaw several promotions to
help expand readership.

  * Writing – I have a bachelors of arts in Literature, with

something which has opened my eyes, I feel, to the incredible wonder that it
is to be a sentient human being. In using Fedora and the vast array of
Open Source offerings, at work I'm known as the guy capable of doing a
lot with little. My heart often breaks when I see such institutions like
public schools pay so much money for the licensing of software of which
I know there is a perfectly good open source alternative. My chief
interest in joining the Fedora Marketing Team is to promote Fedora as a
viable alternative for nonprofits and public institutions. I currently
use Fedora on an eight year old laptop that was discarded and reported
to be “old and broken” but that worked superbly once I put a Fedora Spin
of LXDE on it. I've also spent time with my son navigating the joys of
/Sugar on a Stick/.

Being a father of a child with special needs, a husband to my beautiful
wife Katia, and a coordinator in the public schools often means I can be
a bit busy. I may not be the first to respond to collaboration
initiatives but that doesn't mean I won't be paying attention. I'll
gladly chime in and contribute whenever possible! :)

Thanks so much for the opportunity and please consider including me on
your marketing team!

Hi Jeff, welcome to the Marketing mailing list! Glad we got the
subscription problems resolved. :)

Firstly, I think it's worth offering a welcome to open source in
general! Contributing to your first project is a big deal. I'm happy
that you decided to come to Fedora and offer your skills and abilities
here. I'll try to do my best to offer some personalized pointers for how
you can help us here in Marketing and possibly beyond too. I'll try
breaking this email into little sections for readability.

== Welcome to open source! ==

For starters, though, I would like to offer a helpful guide for
understanding IRC and getting a hang for it. When you first are getting
used to it, it can be a little strange and foreign. Fortunately, another
Marketeer and general Fedora superstar Paul Frields wrote an excellent
beginner's guide to IRC on the Fedora Magazine. I think taking the time
to read this over will definitely be helpful for you in getting started
with it on the right foot.

Another thing worth mentioning too is that the Marketing team, or even
open source in general, isn't as much of a club to be admitted to as it
is a community whiteboard. I mean to say, there's no magic word we have
to say for you to have permission to try doing something or offering
feedback to. Whether it's writing an article or helping work on an idea
or task in a ticket, you can say, "Hey, I want to try working on this!"
and we'll be happy to help offer feedback and guidance towards you
contributing. No special membership pass required. :)

the director of community for OpenMRS, an open source electronic medical record
system. I'm currently serving on the steering committee for LibreHealth, a new
umbrella organization just getting started for open source Health IT projects.

Recently I've had some extra time on my hands and have been working to get up to speed
to contribute to a few FOSS projects that I really care about. I learned about the
Fedora Marketing team through the wiki, and thought I might be able to help out. I've
done quite a bit of marketing work for OpenMRS in the past, and hope that I can add
some experience to help Fedora, since I've been a user for many years now. Some of my
experience includes blogging & content strategy, social media strategy,
advertising, graphic design for online & print media, web design, community
leadership/management, etc. I've already done one blog post for Magazine which is up at

As a long-time Fedora user, I hope to do what I can to help spread the word
about one of my favorite FOSS projects. People have done a great job so far,
but there are still millions of people to get involved, and lots of the planet
still un-informed! :-)

One thing that crossed my mind today was getting the @Fedora account on Twitter

Hi Michael! Welcome to the Marketing mailing list! Seems like we're
seeing a lot of each other around the project. :) Sorry for the late
response back here.

Having someone with your knowledge and background with open source and
marketing is definitely helpful and there's plenty of ways for you to
get involved too. You're already a step ahead by writing the Magazine
article and also commenting in the Trac ticket for the social media
password discussion. This is awesome!

If you're available later on Wednesday, we have our weekly Marketing
meeting on this day, at 21:00 UTC (5pm US EST). If you're free,
definitely consider stopping by and saying hello, and seeing what's up.
Although, it is worth noting that time is likely soon to change after
Flock, so if you're interested in attending the meetings in the future,
you should add your availability to this poll!

http://whenisgood.net/fedora/marketing/2016/fallmeeting

I also agreed with Sylvia's suggestion about considering penning an
article for the Magazine about OpenMRS. I think it's something that
would be pretty awesome to read about and learn more about. If not its
own article, perhaps you could coordinate with Charles for a pretty cool
"How do you Fedora?"

And I was actually thinking about the same thing about the Twitter
account becoming verified, especially since it's so "easy" now. I think
this would be a question for some of our other social media admins.
Maybe send that idea as its own new thread, and let's discuss it more
there! I think it would be an awesome idea to help us "own" our brand a
little more officially, and also make the account the authoritative
source for all news Fedora.

Again, welcome to the Marketing team, Michael! :)

Yeah, i think we should definiently only have at most a couple of flock tweets
in a row. The fedora social accounts aren't really high posting accounts, so
jumping up from max 2-5 tweets a day, to many more is going to be seen as
spammy IMO.

The tweets we do post should have an impact to people following along at home
-- unless we are streaming the keynotes, tweeting that the keynote is on is
only really useful to the 200 people at flock, not the 70K on the social
networks.

Other thoughts welcome.

I mentioned in the meeting the other day, but I'm definitely +1 to
keeping a consistent amount of tweets / posts in other places. I
remember last year, every workshop auto-tweeted and it became to a point
where the entire timeline / wall was flooded with Fedora, which makes it
a challenge for anything to stand out. I think we're all agreed on this,
though.

I like the sounds of keeping content anywhere between 5-10 tweets, and
possibly fewer posts on other platforms like FB and Google+. A little
more noise on Twitter makes sense because of the type of (brief) content
Twitter focuses on.

As an added thought, I think it would be really cool if we could make a
concerted effort to take advantage of media on all our social platforms.
Pictures, short video snippets from a talk, anything visual. I think
this is a *great* way for followers at home to see the things happen and
make our activity mean more. It's not all just words and talks, but
there's people and awesome collaboration happening behind all of it too.
:) If there's a place or person to ship photos to, I'd be happy to
contribute anything towards making a visually interesting timeline /
story for Flock.

@Natalie: I don't know if we have specific plans as of now, but I think
having a general game plan for how we want to keep to our activity
during the week would be helpful!

Comment (by bproffit):

In order to manage the Fedora social media accounts, there needs to be a
solid plan for managing the accounts to ensure there is no unauthorized
access to the accounts. Three principles for defining such a policy should
 be maintained.

 * Transparency
 * Continuity
 * Capability of acting swiftly in the event of a breach

The purpose for distributing passwords is so that we can log into the
accounts to generate new content (that may not always be from a Fedora
source, like the CommBlog and Magazine), engage with our audience, and
 help build a positive brand.

To assist with the management of passwords across a group of users, we can
use pass, a command-line tool that will enable a password store
(collection of passwords) to be maintained within a git repository.

This repository would be private, and maintained on GitHub, GitLab, or
another Fedora-accessibly repo of our choice. Only these people would
always have access to this repository:

 * Fedora Community Lead
 * Fedora Project Leader
 * Fedora Marketing Committee Chairperson

In addition, other members of this group could include:

 * OSAS Social Media Designate
 * Any vetted social media volunteers

This would not only keep an accurate list of who has access to the social
medai passwords (via the repo's authorized user list), but would also be a
quick and safe way to share changed passwords if a breach occurred on a
given social media channel and a password had to be quickly changed. Any
changes would be pushed to the remote repository and subsequently pulled
 into the local forks.

Drawbacks to a single-repository approach would be that all authorized
users would have access to all social media channel passwords. This is
good for cross-coverage, but could pose a security risk. This risk should
be minimized by the vetting of social media content volunteers.

 Action Items:

 * Choose a home for the private repo
 * Determine who will have access to password store moving forward
 * Confirm that a single repo to hold the password stores is the approved
 approach.

Thus far, we manage @Fedora, Fedora on Facebook, the community and brand

with no need to share passwords. Facebook also allows multiple admins on
pages. Hootsuite of course does too (and they may offer a discount to a
FOSS project) but they charge per person and the cost does add up.

Alas, HootSuite offers no such discount. Would that they did, because this
would pretty much solve the situation.

which allows shared folders as long as one person pays for a "premium"
account, as well as KeePass & KeePassX (both FOSS) and maybe Seahorse. I
don't know how the latter ones would work for sharing, e.g., via a private
git repo, but it should be easy enough to find out.

We are looking at pass, coupled with a private git repo. (See next
